Publisher's Summary
Gemma Guillory has lived in Rainier her entire life. She knows the tiny town's ins and outs like the back of her hand, the people like they are her family, their quirks as if they were her own.
She knows her once-charming town is now remembered for one reason, and one reason only. That three innocent people died. That the last stop on the Rainier Ripper's trail of death seventeen years ago was her innocuous little teashop. She knows that the consequences of catching the Ripper still haunt her police officer husband and their marriage to this day and that some of her neighbours are desperate - desperate enough to welcome a dark tourism company keen to cash in on Rainier's reputation as the murder town.
When the tour operator is killed by a Ripper copycat on Gemma's doorstep, the unease that has lurked quietly in the original killer's wake turns to foreboding, and she's drawn into the investigation. Unbeknownst to her, so is a prisoner named Lane Holland. Gemma knows her town. She knows her people. Doesn't she?

An enthralling Second Book in this series
Love this author I have only just discovered. So so happy to see Lane back, even in a small way. Fascinating page turner and well-developed, flawed characters. Plenty of good twists and turns. Great ending…and I love that there is more in the works for Lane!

Atmospheric outback noir
Narrator’s performance felt real- swapping between the vulnerable moments to the tension notched incline of this story was well done. You feel the claustrophobia of this town with its web of secrets.

This Book Shocked Me!
I very rarely get shocked by plot turns and twists but this book did that job astoundingly.
If you aren't from Australia you may have a different experience but I found the descriptions and explanations really immersed me into the world and I was hooked. I finished this in one night and for the first time in a long time, I was in suspense until the end!
Definitely leans hard toward the crime 'who dunnit' rather than a scary thriller, so keep this in mind as it won't scare the hell out of you but it will make you question everyone and everything right until the very last line.
I have rated this 5 stars although in truth I would rate it 4.5 only for a few small inconsistencies which don't take too much away from the plotline and also the fact that I am selfish and I want more after the ending, I feel like there were a couple of things left undiscovered however I would love to see a second book following on from this. :)

A little hard to follow in the beginning with all the different characters, I actually had to restart after reaching about half way because I had gotten a bit lost. Despite this I really enjoyed the story and the narration was excellent. Looking forward to the next one from Shelley Burr!

Loved it
It took a little getting into with a ream of confusing characters to start, but once in the rhythm, loved it.
Once again great storyline by Burr, good characterisation (possibly not as strong as Wake, but was pleased to see Lane Holland back - I feel/hope there are still places to go with him), and Jacque Brennan’s narration engaging and sensitive.
I want Burr to take her time producing the next book because I want it to be as strong … but at the same time I want it now!

Another Enjoyable Australian Story
Whilst the narration was again fantastic (as was Wake), the story wasn't quite as captivating. It was really good, but not exceptional. I would still highly recommend a read/listen but felt I didn't respond as well to these characters as I did in Wake. Still can't wait for the next book in this wonderful series.

Don't judge a book by its cover
all is not as it seems. many twists and turns to keep you guessing until the last pages. small towns are not all happy families . some have a toxic undercurrent that runs deep. at first there were too many names of characters I had difficulty keeping up with who is who in the zoo. then I was hooked the story grabbed me in like a rip tide. I couldn't put this down. not all cops are innocent and never trust the family doctor. at times the juveniles annoyed me with their questions but in the end the pieces of the jigsaw fell into place.
I recommend this book to friends and they love it. beautifully narrated it is easy to feel you know the buildings and town. looking forward to more from the author. this book is a great second to wake. well worth the concentration and time.
