Publisher's Summary
Detective Alan Auhl does things his own way - and gets results. He works cold cases now. Like the death of John Elphick - his daughters are still convinced he was murdered, the coroner not so sure. Or the skeleton that’s just been found under a concrete slab. Or the doctor who killed two wives and a girlfriend and left no evidence at all....

Good story and great narration.
Garry Disher never fails to write an interesting and enjoyable story and the narration fits perfectly.

Not his best but still very readable.
The narration was stilted without any smooth flow. Pronunciation of some/too many words just out and out wrong! Do these people not prepare and at least read the book over before performing? I enjoyed the story but the whole was ruined by poor narration, I will not listen to this narrator again.

The wrong narrator
I love Dishers writing so much. It’s impossible not to listen to them when they’re read by Steve Shanahan without seeing them in your mind as first class addictive Australian crime dramas.
Appreciating just how special the combination of Disher and Shanahan really hit home when starting this book. I found myself increasingly disappointed that the book seemed not to possess Dishers humour and Australian dry wit, but it’s probably there…. Just not brought to life by this narrator. He sounds like a lawyer or barrister. He fails to bring characters to life.
So if like me you’ve adored Disher - read by Shanahan - here’s my tip… don’t expect any other narrator to do him justice. Because the alternatives used in these audiobooks are just so very wrong!!!!

Strangely troubling.
If you don't mind the central character being a dangerously amoral cop with a God complex, and you enjoy a bit of self-justifying revenge porn, this is a perfectly adequate piece of modern Aussie noire.

Story. Narrator
Story was intriguing, different and with an unusual ending. The Narrator did justice to the story.

Dissapointing
Narrator was terrible. Toneless and boring not Garry Dishers best story . I really struggled to get into it but was glad to finish.

Being a Australian living in Melbourne Victoria it was amazing to have a book (of my liking) speaking about my places.
As well as enjoying all the place references l found the emergence of a person move from one side of the law to the other mist interesting. Correcting wrongs you could say.

another great Garry Disher Read
this stand alone Garry Disher book was just as good as I expected. Sadly there are no more books following up Alan Aur',s story.
highly recommend along with all the Garry Disher series

Narrator could do with brushing up on local pronunciation
The narrators of Disher’s novels always have very odd ways of pronouncing place names (look out for Corio and Moe, for example). It’s as though they have no local knowledge at all, which is disappointing given how wonderfully Disher describes both iconic and less iconic Australian locations.

Great read
Clever plot and character development. Different from usual police procedurals with several themes at once
