Winner, Earphones Award 2020

Five long-missing children are about to be returned.

It was summer in the mountains when five small children vanished from their nursery school picnic. The heat was stifling that day, the tinkle of an ice-cream van in the air....

Three-and-a-half years later, in the dead of winter, the children are returned to their families...one by one.

All except for Ivy - the granddaughter of Homicide Detective Kate Wakeland. The other four children say Ivy is dead.

Speculation grows that the mysterious abductor is enacting a cruel revenge plot due to a murderer that Kate put in jail years before.

Kate isn't sure what to believe. But one thing is certain - she's about to begin the battle of her life. When the children were first stolen, she was prevented from investigating the case.

But now, Kate will be relentless in uncovering the identity of the abductor and discovering what happened to Ivy.

Loved it!

A great story - with twists and turns that are well linked together. Lots of threads to weave together but it was done beautifully.
Having visited the Blue Mountains area a lot, I enjoyed knowing the areas in the story - great Australian read/listen.

didnt finish

Bought this book because I'd finished The Game you Played by the same author (which was great). The narration in this book irritated me. The attempts at the American and Ocker accents were terrible. Storyline seemed good. I will go back to it when I finish my other books (maybe).

Kill me now!

The narration almost killed a great story.
Abysmal accents, cringeworthy interpretation of character styles. Kath and Kim, eat your heart out !

Narration almost unbearable

I’ve loved Anni Taylor’s other books, but this one was almost ruined by the narration, every single accent she did was terrible. Very hard to listen to, and almost offensive? Even the way the Australian characters were read, was very cringeworthy. I made it through listening at a faster speed. I liked the storyline, but the narration was a big thumbs down.

Great story line. Kept me guessing and wanting to keep listening. Loved the narrator.

Nicely narrated. I really liked how the chapters were named after characters. I will be listening to more Anni Taylor books.

Kept me guessing

initially I thought the story was a bit slow, but it didn't take me long to get hooked and then I couldn't put it down. Love this author and this book did not disappoint.
