Publisher's Summary

A great Australian yarn about a bold Australian outback adventure belonging to another time in another world, inspired by a true story. The happy routine life of two Perth boys is shattered one November day in 1950 when they are falsely accused of theft. With fabricated evidence mounting against them they decide to run away from their homes and families to avoid prosecution and pooling their meager pocket money they back the winner of the Melbourne Cup and fund an escape.

Critic Reviews

"David Tredinnick is nothing short of outstanding as the boys travel, meeting a happy-go-lucky Irishman, a soft-spoken priest, an older Aborigine man and his nephew, and many others. Each voice for more than a dozen unique characters sounds perfectly distinct.... It’s an exciting trip for the boys and for listeners, as well, as the two mates discover the true definition of home." Fantastic

It took a couple chapters for me to get into the book, but then...BOOM! I was hooked! Really enjoyed the adventure. Written and read to bring the story alive. When I was 4 chapters from the end, my husband started listening in as well, and he too enjoyed it

A favorite of Dad and the boys

I listened to this to verify it was ok for kids. Often Audible kids books are not appropriate in my opinion. Some good lessons but nothing too deep, just a fun adventure of some young boys. My boys love to listen to this one on road trips. Narrator has a fun Australian accent.

awesome story

well worth the credit. great for kids, great for adults. no swear words or other stuff that would inhibit a 10 year old from enjoying it, while being well written enough to keep adults engaged.

Do Not Miss!

This is an entirely charming and engaging little story about two young boys' coming of age. The story may be simple, but the narration, story, and characters make it a very worthwhile addition to your library. Additionally, it is a wonderful listen that will make you smile and feel good.

A cracking yarn

I read this book and loved the boys own adventure before listening to it, David Tredinnick does a great job of giving all of the characters personalities to life.

A great holiday listen.
