Story
Gemma Guillory has lived in Rainier her entire life. She knows the tiny town's ins and outs like the back of her hand, the people like they are her family, their quirks as if they were her own. She knows her once-charming town is now remembered for one reason, and one reason only. That three innocent people died. That the last stop on the Rainier Ripper's trail of death seventeen years ago was her innocuous little teashop. She knows that the consequences of catching the Ripper still haunt her police officer husband and their marriage to this day and that some of her neighbours are desperate.

Daisy Darker is arriving at her grandmother’s house for her 80th birthday. It is Halloween, and Seaglass—the crumbling Cornish house perched upon its own tiny private island—is at one with the granite rocks it sits on. The Darker family haven’t all been in the same place for over a decade, and when the tide comes in, they’ll be cut off from the rest of the world for eight hours. When the tide goes back out, nothing will ever be the same again, because one of them is a killer.

Story
Naomi started grief counselling prepared to run for cover as soon as her therapist, Mia, pulled out a crystal or tried to align her chakras. When Mia suggests that she join a support group, Naomi is skeptical: how could she begin to describe what it felt like to lose her sister, Jo? How could she possibly share her loss and rage to a room full of people? How could she express her helplessness that Jo's killer walks free on a suspended sentence? And how could she share her deepest desire to see Jo's killer dead by her hand?

Story
The first drops start to fall when Quinn spies the body. With no reception and nothing but an empty road for miles, does she stop to help or keep driving to safety? Back at the iconic country pub where Quinn works, Andrea is sandbagging the place in preparation for heavy rains. Alone with her sleeping son in the back room, she reluctantly lets a biker in to wait out the storm. Out on the wet roads, tensions arise among four backpackers on their way to Darwin. They haven’t prepared for this kind of weather and the flooding isn’t the only threat on the horizon.

Publisher's Summary
Evelyn simply vanished.
The small town of Nannine lies in the harsh red interior of New South Wales. Once a thriving outback centre, years of punishing drought have whittled it down to no more than a couple of pubs and a police station. And its one sinister claim to fame: the still-unsolved disappearance of Evelyn McCreery 19 years ago from the bedroom she shared with her twin sister.
Mina McCreery's life has been defined by the intense and ongoing public interest in her sister's case. Now an anxious and reclusive adult, Mina lives alone on her family's sunbaked destocked sheep farm. The million-dollar reward her mother established to solve the disappearance has never been paid out.
Enter Lane Holland, a private investigator who dropped out of the police academy to earn a living cracking cold cases. Lane has his eye on the unclaimed money, but he also has darker motivations for wanting to solve the case.
Thoroughly enjoyable, with an unforgettable setting and cast of characters, Wake is a powerful, unsparing story of how trauma ripples outward when people's private tragedies become public property, and how it's never too late for the truth to set things right.
Critic Reviews
"One of the year's best debuts. Intriguing and compelling. Shelley Burr is a bright new talent in Australian crime fiction." (Chris Hammer)
"A nerve-jangling thriller with a brilliantly twisty plot, Wake is also a haunting exploration of trauma in the age of celebrity victimhood. Shelley Burr's true-to-life characters, beautifully evoked landscapes and breakneck pacing make for compulsive reading." (Rose Carlyle)
"An effortlessly accomplished, astonishing debut set against the heat and isolation of the Australian outback." (Dinuka McKenzie)

Seriously good.
I listen to audiobooks every day... I go back to boxed cassettes days, hauling bulky boxes of cassettes around with me. The Walkman was a game-changer with books on CD's and then along came the iPod.
I have been an Audible member since 2008... we are talking over 1000 audio books easily.
Some books stick. Locked into consciousness.
Wake will be one of those. Brilliant.
Simply great storytelling by Shelley Burr.
Superb narration by Jacquie Brennan.

Winner!!!
Whilst desperate for some entertainment on a long car ride I bought this book on a whim- a new author, not many reviews- but I liked the synopsis and was desperate for something more than the books in my unread audible library I’ve been meaning to get back to. I gave it a go and it was such a winner. The writing and narration of this book made me feel like I was there myself, in a rugged outback landscape completely enthralled in Mina and Lane’s stories. It had me hooked in the beginning middle and end. To Shelley Burr I say- What a ripper of a first book! Please write another one
