Story
Yuwonderie's seven founding families have lorded it over their district for a century, growing ever more rich and powerful. But now—in startling circumstances—one of their own is found dead in a ditch and homicide detectives Ivan Lucic and Nell Buchanan are sent to investigate. Could the murder be connected to the execution of the victim's friend thirty years ago—another member of The Seven—or even to the long-forgotten story of a servant girl on the brink of the Great War?

Publisher's Summary
Flynn was only a teenager when her parents were killed in a terrible accident. Too young to lose her parents, too young to take on responsibility for her younger sister Kaiya, too young to protect Kaiya from the harshness of their new lives in the following years. Desperate to help her sister, Flynn reaches out to Willa Tomlinson, a grief counsellor renowned for helping her patients cope with profound loss. Under Willa’s influence and care, Kaiya finally seems to turn a corner, joining the climate action collective that Willa leads. Kaiya’s passion is ignited and she immerses herself in the group, leaving on frequent camping trips in the West Australian bush. But when a raging bushfire sweeps through the bushland near Margaret River, Kaiya fails to return with the rest of the group.
Noah is no stranger to loss or to violence, but these days, he’s more interested in helping people develop the skills to defend themselves than seeking out fights of his own. When Flynn enters his life, desperate to find out what really happened to her sister, a friendship sparks, and Noah finds himself agreeing to help her. To do so, he’ll need to infiltrate Willa’s cultish collective at the fireground.
In this new Original from the number one internationally best-selling author of The Ruin and The Murder Rule, Dervla McTiernan, Flynn and Noah must reckon with their pasts and fight to find the answers they seek before Kaiya’s trail burns out.

Love the stories Dervla writes and this is my favourite!
Great character development, interesting intersection of narratives. A throughly enjoyable read (listen) all with Dervla’s signature twist! Well worth the wait!

Could not tear my ears away!
I’m not gonna lie - I don’t usually use Audible for fiction books but… I also can’t resist anything written by Dervla McTiernan - so I have broken my rule twice now (yep - she has another great audiobook on here)!!
I have found all of her books to be clever with twisty turny plots that keep me guessing. And because she never over explains, I feel drawn into the story - which is exactly what happened with The Fireground.
I thought it would be a great listen for my daily walks but… I binged the whole book in one afternoon/evening.
The characters felt so real to me - I just had to know what happened next! An added bonus was that so many of the WA settings were familiar to me.
If you’re looking for a gripping tale to lose yourself in - I highly recommend The Fireground.

A different read from the author’s usual
A boy and a girl, each living in different parts of Australia, deal with heartbreaking living conditions. With the terrible fires as a background to the plot, it seems that nothing is going their way. The dramatic conclusion was satisfying, making me still love Dervla McTiernan’s books. The narration was entertaining as well.

so good!
This is different subject matter from Mctiernan's cop stories, but the level of detail and psychological engagement is there in her tightest storytelling yet. it's just so good! I couldn't stop thinking about it when I wasn't listening. And the end was a true surprise, such a welcome thing when most books have predictable events and endings.

Great story, great narration.
I loved this book. Its characters were very believable and interesting. the two stoylines, running side by side, kept me interested and wanted to know more. The whole story was very well put together and totally believable. The two narrators were excellent, and it was through searching for other books that Harriot Gordon - Anderson had narrated, that I came across this one. I would highly recommend this book.

Really kept my interest
The narrator was excellent as always
The story line was quite moving and interesting
And the ending was what I hoped for,not wanting to spoil it for other readers
Well worth a credit

Couldn't stop listening start to finish.
Emotionally connected to the characters.
Thrilling crimes. Story moved and flowed at a perfect pace. Left me wanting more. Another brilliant novella by Dervla!

Compelling and Harrowing
Gripping and well written. I quickly became invested in the characters and couldn't stop listening. Different to Dervla’s Cormac Reilly series. The characters here do have tough life stories, so I would say not to be listened to on a down day!

A compelling read.
Different to the author’s Cormac Reilly series, in which the mood was bright and breezy by comparison, ‘The Fireground’ is more sombre in mood and moves at a slower pace. It is basically a story of survival in the face of awful challenges which the main characters have to endure. The author once again displays her capacity for empathy, not only for her main characters, but for her lesser ones too, so that, difficult to listen to at times because of the subject matter, we stay with the story as we care what happens to the main characters.
I recommend it.

Outstanding book
I stayed awake all night reading this book, ALL NIGHT! I could not stop. The characters are all three dimensional and complex and the story is so exciting. I can’t stop thinking about it even though I have finished. I recommend this to everyone. Thank you for writing it 😊
