Publisher's Summary

Random House presents the audiobook edition of Braving the Wilderness, written and read by Brené Brown.

'True belonging doesn't require us to change who we are. It requires us to be who we are.' Social scientist Brené Brown, PhD, LMSW has sparked a global conversation about the experiences that bring meaning to our lives - experiences of courage, vulnerability, love, belonging, shame and empathy. In Braving the Wilderness, Brown redefines what it means to truly belong in an age of increased polarisation. With her trademark mix of research, storytelling and honesty, Brown will again change the cultural conversation while mapping out a clear path to true belonging.

Brown argues that what we're experiencing today is a spiritual crisis of disconnection, and introduces four practices of true belonging that challenge everything we believe about ourselves and each other. She writes, 'True belonging requires us to believe in and belong to ourselves so fully that we can find sacredness both in both being a part of something, and in standing alone when necessary. But in a culture that's rife with perfectionism and pleasing, and with the erosion of civility, it's easy to stay quiet, hide in our ideological bunkers, or fit in rather than show up as our true selves and brave the wilderness of uncertainty and criticism. But true belonging is not something we negotiate or accomplish with others; it's a daily practice that demands integrity and authenticity. It's a personal commitment that we carry in our hearts.' Brown offers us the clarity and courage we need to find our way back to ourselves and to each other. And that path cuts right through the wilderness.

Brown writes, 'The wilderness is an untamed, unpredictable place of solitude and searching. It is a place as dangerous as it is breathtaking, a place as sought after as it is feared. But it turns out to be the place of true belonging, and it's the bravest and most sacred place you will ever stand.'

A great start..

Universal human experience, Universal human experience, Universal human experience, USA, Universal human experience, USA, Universal human experience, USA, USA, USA, GOD, USA, GOD, GUNS, USA, USA...

USA, USA, USA...

USA, USA...

USA!

..after all, who else is there?

I can only imagine what it is like to be living through the redneck revival in America, and how much it must be dominating everyone's consciousness. But the world contains 7b people - with less than 5 percent of those being American. You have a global audience. Take the blinkers off!

I love Brene Brown's work, the opening even brought tears to my eyes, but after cleaning out a few rats and mice here there are clearly still a couple of elephants in the room. You need a very good 'parochiality filter'. Christian + scientist etc. Anywhere on earth outside the southern US you actually have to choose.

I basically purchased this book for my Japanese friend who lives in New Zealand, who I think really needs to hear this message, but who doesn't know anything about American social/political embarrassment.

I ended up not passing it on.

Exceptional path towards authenticity

This is a wonderful exploration on how we show up in the world. How we be brave and authentic whilst respecting ourselves and others. Take up the challenge.

another great book by Brene Brown

Full of wonderful stories and self reflection. Brene is herself incredibly brave and is so expertised in assisting us to 'brave the wilderness'. one of my favourite authors in self development and authenticity.

Love Brene, could not get into this.

I really wanted to like this book but it just did not do it for me. Although the subject seemed perfect for me I did not connect. Sure, it has some sparks of wisdom - it is Brene after all and she delivers it with such power - but it ended so quickly without anything really hitting me.

So poignant and relevant today

Brene has touched a nerve with this book, of what is tearing apart our world and communities today. In my view it is essential reading. On a personal level, Brene again delivers relevant and authentic explanations for her research - and to hear it delivered in her voice was such a gift. I can highly recommend this - even if you don't agree with everything she says it's an important dialogue to be a part of. Thank you Brene for your courage to stand alone and show others an example to do the same.

Wow!

What a transformational and delightful read! Thank you. Most important learning (relevant in current climate) is to be careful not to turn advocacy vocabulary into weaponry and that we are sums of more than 1 belief...I pray I can truly do better.

I am the wilderness!

I sit here intertwining tears of sorrow with laughs of joy, I feel a deep sense of release. I feel gotten and heard. Standing alone, belonging nowhere and everywhere.
Loved hearing Brene's story, I identify so much. I am truely grateful for this text, each one of her books building from the last. The truth literally hitting home in my wild heart.
But it, listen to it, follow the advice. Heal yourself and help heal our disconnected, spiritually sick world. God bless you brene. I value your vulnerability and courage so much.

Strong Back, Soft Front, Wild Heart.

Put simply, I loved it. Brené’s storytelling is a joy to listen to, her tone and speed made listening and taking in the content so easy.

The mix of theory and experience kept me engaged throughout.

The work around trust is an exceptionally good framework and the vulnerability shared within the pages is walking the talk.

For me this book is a game changer. Thank you Dr Brown ❤️

life changing

Brene is the most powerful writer I have ever come across. Her words, her research & the way she speaks so truthfully have truly reached corners of my life where I previously felt stuck or alone. Her work is a practice in our home.
