Story
Leadership is not about titles, status and power over people. Leaders are people who hold themselves accountable for recognising the potential in people and ideas and developing that potential. This is an audiobook for everyone who is ready to choose courage over comfort, make a difference and lead. When we dare to lead, we don't pretend to have the right answers; we stay curious and ask the right questions. We don't see power as finite and hoard it; we know that power becomes infinite when we share it and work to align authority and accountability.

Struggle can be our greatest call to courage and Rising Strong our clearest path to deeper meaning, wisdom and hope.

Hugh van Cuylenburg was a primary school teacher volunteering in northern India when he had a life-changing realisation: despite the underprivileged community the children were from, they were remarkably positive. By contrast, back in Australia Hugh knew that all too many children struggled with depression, social anxieties and mental illness. His own little sister had been ravaged by anorexia nervosa. How was it that young people he knew at home, who had food, shelter, friends and a loving family, struggled with their mental health, while these kids seemed so contented and resilient?

We tend to believe that normality equals health. Yet what is the norm in the Western world? Mental illness is on an unstoppable rise. Some 45 percent of Europeans suffer high blood pressure, and nearly 70 percent of Americans take at least one prescription drug. Illness and trauma are defining how we live. In his new masterpiece, renowned physician, addiction expert and author Gabor Maté dissects the underlying causes of this malaise—physical and emotional, and connects the dots between our personal suffering and the pressures of modern-day living.

Intelligence is usually seen as the ability to think and learn, but in a rapidly changing world, there's another set of cognitive skills that might matter more: the ability to rethink and unlearn. In recent months, the pandemic has forced us all to reevaluate our assumptions about health and safety and multiple acts of police brutality have challenged most of us to reconsider our responsibility for fighting racism. Yet in our daily lives, too many of us still favor the comfort of conviction over the discomfort of doubt.

Publisher's Summary
Brought to you by Penguin.
In her latest book, five-time number one New York Times best-selling author Dr Brené Brown writes, 'If we want to find the way back to ourselves and each other, we need language and the grounded confidence to both tell our stories, and to be stewards of the stories that we hear. This is the framework for meaningful connection.'
In Atlas of the Heart, Brown takes us on a journey through 87 of the emotions and experiences that define what it means to be human. As she maps the necessary skills and lays out an actionable framework for meaningful connection, she gives us the language and tools to access a universe of new choices and second chances - a universe where we can share and steward the stories of our bravest and most heart-breaking moments with one another in a way that builds connection.
Over the past two decades, Brown's extensive research into the experiences that make us who we are has shaped the cultural conversation and helped define what it means to be courageous with our lives. Atlas of the Heart draws on this research, as well as Brown's singular skills as a researcher/storyteller, to lay out an invaluable research-based framework that shows us that naming an experience doesn't give the experience more power, it gives us the power of understanding, meaning and choice.
Brown shares, 'I want this to be an atlas for all of us, because I believe that, with an adventurous heart and the right maps, we can travel anywhere and never fear losing ourselves. Even when we have no idea where we are.'

Simply what I needed to hear & learn
Brene’s work is so incredible. They way she can articulate her work into, understandable and awe inspiring epiphanies every time she opens her mouth is why I feel drawn to her. Her passion and dedication to understand human emotions, behaviour and why we do what we do inspires me to be the best version of myself, and to connect and understand people and allow true genuine humanity. As a leader of two businesses, and a mum of three it’s paramount for me to know first and foremost human behaviour and emotions to best manage my children and people, Brene has been my go to for years. Highly recommend!!

Much More than an Audiobook
I Rarely do this, if I like an Audiobook I just give it a 5 star rating and I'm done. but I haven't even finished this book & I'm motivated to write something.
If you know Brene's work then the content of the book really needs little introduction, whit I really wanted to highlight was the 'performance' of this book. Brene Brown is an excellent spoken word communicator, and this 'book' is no exception. What you get here is so much more than the book in audio form, descriptions and background if the illustrations in the book, asides and anecdotes that aren't in the print text, Brene's intimate and warm delivery that lift the words off the page and make them something even more engaging.
brilliant job, Brene & team xx

Another insightful & life-changing book from Brené
I'm likely biased as Brené Brown is my favourite author & speaker; I'll say it anyway... another masterpiece! Atlas of the Heart is a handbook to understanding ourselves and others through truly understanding words and emotions.
I bought the book as well to read along with the audiobook, which was really helpful. (The hardcover book is aesthetically pleasing & great quality, too.)
I highly recommend watching her 5-part series on Atlas of the Heart as well; it ties everything together really well. I'm in Australia, but the series is on the streaming service 'Binge' here. Happy listening/reading! :)

My first read and I will be looking for her other works
I haven’t read a non fiction book before and I was apprehensive to read this (in case I found it dull) but this amazed me.
The author/narrator is wonderful, I loved listening to her insight and I doubt reading the book myself would have been as engaging.
The book is very thought provoking making you reassess your own behaviour personally and professionally. I will most certainly start reading her other books.

Brene is such an excellent storyteller and it’s so good that she recorded this audiobook like she’s talking to us instead of just robotic uttering words in the book. The content is as great as her other books- research based, clearly clarified and distinguished from similar ones with life touching examples. Inspiring book!

Excellent as always
Brenes work is always fantastic and profound and i enjoyed this book thoroughly.
The only thing that I found difficult in the audiobook reading of her work specifically. Is the re-reading of sentences. As a neurodivergent person I have to listen to the book at nearly twice the speed for it to match with my level of audio processing. I don't need to listen to a sentence twice to be able to comprehend and process it's meaning. If on the odd occasion I do want to listen to something twice I'll just skip back 30 seconds. Having things be reread so often and having to listen to them twice whether I like it or not was deeply frustrating. I recognise that it's a stylistic choice that probably the majority of people like as it makes the reading quite personable, it made the reading trickier for me. I dislike the idea that Brené might actually read this feedback, i dont like being critical of others but I feel like it's important to share the experiences of neurogivergent people as people may not know.

THE MOST WONDERFUL BOOK
I have this in hardback and audible.
It’s become a bible for my life.
I don’t think I’ll ever learn and absorb it all enough. The research, the insight and the wealth of knowledge. I’ve learned and will continue to learn so much about myself and others from this book.
I’m a therapist in training. I am a law of attraction believer and this book just sits so comfortably with my intentions and beliefs.
It is so wonderfully written and uses language in a way that very complex theory can be understood.
Thank you Brené for again expanding my mind and feeding my soul.
A book that should be read by all x

Wonderful book and fantastic audio experience
In addition to being a fantastic book, this audio version is simply brilliant. Brene is not only reading the text, she is talking to you as an audio book listener. Key images are described with words which helps massively if the pdf cannot be viewed. And also the animated voice of Brene gives so much colour and personality to everything that's in the content. Thank you for going above and beyond with the recording!

Great book, difficult narration
This is a great book which is full of really fascinating insights. A big issue that detracted from my overall enjoyment was that the otherwise excellent narration was really held back by the choice to constantly reread selected quotes. This felt distracting and a little condescending at times and I'd have preferred it if the author had chosen to just let the text flow and trust the listener to skip back to the bits that interested them most.

Really powerful
Such an interesting book. Effectively a dictionary and instruction manual for understanding emotions and their impact in day-to-day life. Entirely worth reading and highly recommended.

Another winner by Brene
What a fascinating book, I learnt a lot about labelling our emotions, the variety of the human experience and the potential benefits of identifying what we're truly feeling. The last chapter on nearest enemies was a real insight, it made so much sense as to how we can experience disconnect (think I'll re-listen to this chapter again). Thank goodness for Brene and her team of researchers for bringing these topics to life! I really enjoyed the pictures too, worth looking at the PDF.

Well worth listening to
As a therapist I listened intently to what Brene has discovered through her research and find there are many points that I find helpful and will explore further, I listened as previous academic researcher as a student of counselling and psychology.... but I guess that the lay person may find this work too wordy and academic based, with little application to their lives. I help people apply their self discovery to their lives and it takes a different journey to apply this knowledge so Im left feeling rather unfinished ! as I need to apply the theory and this is just theoretical.

8/10
good concepts, good structure, good ideas, good theories to consider. struggled a little with the way rereading of quotes was done.
