Publisher's Summary

Random House presents the audiobook edition of Dare to Lead by Brené Brown.

In her number one NYT best sellers, Brené Brown taught us what it means to dare greatly, rise strong and brave the wilderness. Now, based on new research conducted with leaders, change makers and culture shifters, she’s showing us how to put those ideas into practice so we can step up and lead.

Leadership is not about titles, status and power over people. Leaders are people who hold themselves accountable for recognising the potential in people and ideas and developing that potential. This is an audiobook for everyone who is ready to choose courage over comfort, make a difference and lead.

When we dare to lead, we don't pretend to have the right answers; we stay curious and ask the right questions. We don't see power as finite and hoard it; we know that power becomes infinite when we share it and work to align authority and accountability. We don't avoid difficult conversations and situations; we lean into the vulnerability that’s necessary to do good work.

But daring leadership in a culture that's defined by scarcity, fear and uncertainty requires building courage skills, which are uniquely human. The irony is that we're choosing not to invest in developing the hearts and minds of leaders at the same time we're scrambling to figure out what we have to offer that machines can't do better and faster. What can we do better? Empathy, connection and courage, to start.

Brené Brown spent the past two decades researching the emotions that give meaning to our lives. Over the past seven years, she found that leaders in organisations ranging from small entrepreneurial start-ups and family-owned businesses to nonprofits, civic organisations and Fortune 50 companies are asking the same questions:

How do you cultivate braver, more daring leaders? And how do you embed the value of courage in your culture?

Dare to Lead answers these questions and gives us actionable strategies and real examples from her new research-based, courage-building programme.

Brené writes, ‘One of the most important findings of my career is that courage can be taught, developed and measured. Courage is a collection of four skill sets supported by twenty-eight behaviours. All it requires is a commitment to doing bold work, having tough conversations and showing up with our whole hearts. Easy? No. Choosing courage over comfort is not easy. Worth it? Always. We want to be brave with our lives and work. It's why we're here.’

She did it again. So simple, so powerful.

I can't tell whether the impact of Brene's writing is amplified by her voice and her story, or if it is just so real and authentic that it would hold up on it's own either way. However, no matter the answer, this book was another game changer for me. It inspired me, validated me, gave me perspective and became woven into my identity. It is nothing short of brilliant.
Brene has gifted the world with yet another gem that soothes your soul like a big sister. With her ability to relate and the ability to love herself despite her (self perceived) flaws, is so engaging. Listening to her tell this story is mesmerising but to listen and be able to simultaneously feel her pain/embarrassment/humour/emotion makes it so valuable. Yes, she is Brene Brown - gifted researcher, Author, speaker, mother, daughter, sister, neighbour and wife (plus much more I am sure) and yes, she is also batshit crazy with the BS she lets in to her head sometimes, just like the rest of us.
I cannot recommend this book highly enough. I wish every workplace person would read it and lay our vulnerability cards on the table for all to see.

Loved the ideas, insights and strategies.

Will incorporate into my life and relationships. Loved the chapter on confabulation -- "the story I am making is..." such a simple and brilliant way to let someone know that your mind has already begun creating a story and that you'd like to get better understanding and clarity.

The modern day leaders hand book

This book is amazing! As a leader it’s helped me implement some quick simple strategies to have quick wins with my team and dive into the tough conversations. I’ve actually been able to help a team member re-ignite their love of growth in many areas of life not just work which is a major win for both of us. If you are passionate about people and helping them grow, this is the book for you.

Excellent content and narration

lots of relatable and usable info. I've already started sharing the concepts with colleagues, and recommending the book title to everyone that will listen.

I'm looking forward to listening again, to fill in some gaps and get a greater grasp and understanding.

I've also bought the hard copy book, and I'm glad to know that extra resources are available online, to help implement the strategies defined within.

In the right place at the right time

This is a book whose time has come. Victor Hugo said: All the forces in the world are not so powerful as an idea whose time has come.

In the current environment with political upheaval, it feels like the old system and structures are being irrevocably changed. In all this, we need leaders to guide us. Having said that I believe people have given up on leaders and often choosing the best from a bad bunch.

This book is truly an idea whose time has come. By being vulnerable and human; leaders can really inspire and motivate others for the tumultuous times that is only just starting.

If nothing else, this book has given me confidence in the processes I use to develop leaders. One part emotional intelligence mixed with two parts bravery plus some practical skills.

I have not read any of her previous books, but I dare you to read this one.

Brilliant!

Brene answers for me questions about how I have felt but couldn't articulate needalone seek out answers for.

Putting herself and others as examples of points she makes ensures the research she refers to is practical and relatable.

No, this book is not new, but...

When someone manages to publish the same bestseller over and over again, barely changing the cover, when someone is capable of overcoming stage fright to the extent that the performance is almost narcissistic and overshadowing the profound truth of the message, when someone manages to become a star by addressing the biggest fears of humanity, then that message must be pretty damn good. Five stars for content, one star for innovation. And three stars for walking the talk.

Brene is always good, but this felt like a repeat

Brene is always good and I love that she read the book and delivered it more like a seminar than a straight read, more discourse than lecture. However, having read all her previous books, I felt that this was an amalgamation of her previous books rather than fresh information. I agree that good information is worth repeating but I could have done that by rereading her previous books rather than buying this one. Lots of summaries of previous advice, lists, definitions and actions. So overall I was rather disappointed.

I wish every Leader would read this book!

This is one of the best books on leadership I have ever read! Brene gets to the very core of what true leadership really is, and she willingly offers great examples from her own life and research
and stories from leaders many of us admire. I am a great admirer of Brene and her important work!

VERY LITTLE NEW IN HERE

I love Brene's previous work - have gobbled up Power of Vulnerability, Daring Greatly, Gifts of Imperfection - but for those of us seasoned in her work there is little new in here. There is also extensive use of language that doesn't lend itself to an International audience - "rumble" drove me mad!!! In the UK rumble is a noise it is not something you do with a team! Plus other such phrases as "paint done for me" - I get it, but it just doesn't work for me.

I look forward to Brene doing some new research and to her sharing her inspirational insights with us all, rather than rehashing the old stuff under the new guise of Leadership.

Best one since Shame & Vulnerability. Superb!

Loved this book. Really powerful and useful tools to improve not just leadership skills but life skills and communication. Great content, easy to listen too and well explained skills. Comes with corresponding literature and worksheets which are available from the website. This is my favourite book since her original Shame and vulnerability. A must read! I prefer the listening versions as you hear Brene Brown reading it and it has more depth as her personality warm voice and personality shine through. I would recommend.

Love Brene 100%

Was soooooo excited to download Brene’s
latest book as have and practiced them all but was, honestly, disappointed as I listened to it. Super tactical - which is very important - however with a title of Dare to Lead, I was hoping for something else. Anyways learnt a few new things so nothing lost but not what I thought it would be xxx

Mind blowing. Challenging. Awesome

I really don’t know where to start. I have been told to Brené Brown for a long time and I thought she couldn’t live up to expectations. She exceeded them and beyond. I want to fly to Texas and train with her. This has changed my life and my organisation. This has the power to change the whole world.

The book didnt speak to me because it wasnt FOR me

I am a Brene fan, there is not a friend I haven't recommended her teachings to. I felt in this book Brene had lost her authentic voice. Talking about the effects daring leaderships have on CEOs and top execs doesnt apply to me nor does it impress me as something to aspire to. I am a mother of two and an activist, I lead every day but the examples given were set in the board room with exec jarg and inspired managerial - speak that really didnt rersonate with me or really sound like the Brene I've been fond of. Maybe it made sense to those folk but is that where her readership lies?

The narration was also at a million miles per hour which I get is her style but it was too much. I switched off or zoned her out often.

I struggled to finish this book and looking back, I dont even retain 1% of the material. I think it's mostly the reading style didnt go for me and the content was all over the place
