• Episode 18 - Running and Walking - Part 2
    Sep 5 2025

    2 Approaches for Covering Distance

Either walk the whole way or alternating the walk and run

    1. Walk Faster – How To

    Walk with intent

Focus - if mind drifts off, you'll slow down

Keep track of your times - miles or km’s or whatever distance

    Arms control speed of legs

Keep arms bent at 90 degree – they will move faster and so will legs

    2. Alternate between walking and running

Keys to the Walk / Run Alternating Pattern

    Focus on walk

If alternating – Primary focus in the walk. Walk with intent and focus, maintain speed.

Wrong Mindset - Running is primary with periods of walking as rest (causes you to walk slowly)

Correct Mindset - Walking is primary and use running to speed up the walk.

  • Episode 17 - Running and Walking - Part 1
    Aug 29 2025

Welcome to The Hip Replacement Podcast – a show by a hip replacement patient FOR hip replacement patients, their families and friends.

Running may not be the best activity for hip implants

Still, some people would rather run than face life without running

Consider what you gain from running and whether there are any alternative ways to achieve the same outcome.

If you’re going to run, mitigate impact to the hip as much as possible by:

    • Avoiding running on concrete
    • Selecting events with off-road surfaces
    • Landing on the balls of your feet rather than your heels
    • Getting fit for the right shoes taking into consideration your hip
    • Alternating between walking and running

  • Episode 16 - Leg Length Discrepancy
    Aug 21 2025

Welcome to The Hip Replacement Podcast – a show by a hip replacement patient FOR hip replacement patients, their families and friends.

Whether you're preparing for surgery, in recovery, or just looking to move and live better — you're in the right place.

This episode is about Leg Length Discrepancy (LLD), which can occur when the length of the implanted components does not match the length of the natural hip components which were removed. This situation can also occur due to the alignment of the implanted components.

LLD can contribute to aches and pains in hips, knees, as well as muscles in the legs and back.

Depending upon the degree of the LLD, the problems may not be noticeable, be mild or even severe. It’s important to identify the existence of any discrepancy. A physical therapist can assist.

To reduce the impact of LLD, use a shoe insert on the shorter leg side, stretch the muscles of the legs and back, and avoid sitting in the same position for prolonged periods.

  • Episode 15 - Blocking Time For Our Health
    Aug 14 2025

Welcome to The Hip Replacement Podcast – a show by a hip replacement patient FOR hip replacement patients, their families and friends.

Whether you're preparing for surgery, in recovery, or just looking to move and live better — you're in the right place.

In this Episode, I asked the question: What if you could be in the best shape of your life?

Even after a hip surgery, it’s possible to be in great physical (and mental) shape.

You can be lean, strong and flexible.

Hip surgery may be the wake-up call we need to pay attention to our health.

Surgery is a good reason to take a time out from the day and take care of our health

    Action Steps

    • Schedule it – block time for it
    • Just Start
    • Start Small
    • Be consistent
    • Taking action will lead to motivation (not the other way around)
    • Build momentum to create the behavior or habit

  • Episode 14 - Squeaking and Grinding
    Aug 8 2025

Welcome to The Hip Replacement Podcast – a show by a hip replacement patient FOR hip replacement patients, their families and friends.

Whether you're preparing for surgery, in recovery, or just looking to move and live better — you're in the right place.

    Artificial hips are mechanical components.

There could be friction between parts, which can cause squeaking or grinding.

    Lubricating helps reduce friction.

    Stay hydrated.

    Stretch the muscles.

Exercise all sides of the legs.

Increase range of motion to lubricate joint.

  • Episode 13 - Sleep After Hip Replacement
    Jul 31 2025

Welcome to The Hip Replacement Podcast – a show by a hip replacement patient FOR hip replacement patients, their families and friends.

In this Episode, I shared some alternatives for sleep after a hip replacement.

First night was in a hospital bed which was inclined.

Recliners may be easier to get down to and up from than a bed.

A large wedge-shaped pillow can be used to create an incline once in a bed.

After several months of sleeping on my back, I was able to sleep on my stomach.

A firmer mattress may help prevent hips from sinking.

Change positions to find what’s comfortable and does not result in stiffness in the morning.

Sleeping on your stomach helps to stretch the muscles in the front of legs and hips.

    Jul 24 2025

In this Episode, I shared my Comeback Story and how you can create your own Comeback Story. This looks different for each person.

Once the hip replacement is over, what is the thing or things you can do to create some highlights or some positives in your life. You have the ability to swing the pendulum to the positive side after going through the downside of a hip replacement.

    How to create your Comeback

    1. Move past the hip replacement – take accountability for recovery

    3. Start Small

  • Episode 11 - Being Terrified
    Jul 19 2025

Welcome to The Hip Replacement Podcast – a show for hip replacement patients by a hip replacement patient.

In this Episode, I shared the evolution of the fear I had surrounding the hip replacement.

First, I was in disbelief at the diagnoses and what was going to happen

Second, I was fearful in the days leading up the surgery

Third, I was absolutely terrified the morning of surgery

Fourth, I was uncertain about the outcome

Fifth, I became confident in the future

Leading up to my second surgery, 18 months after the first, I was very relaxed and ready to get through the surgery as well as the physical therapy so I could get back to the lifestyle I wanted. The confidence I established following the first surgery carried me through the process around the second surgery.

If you’re experiencing these different emotions before or after surgery, just keep moving forward. These are natural emotions to experience when going through such a life shock. There’s a better, more capable life waiting for you.
