• It's a wrap up with Susie and Lorraine
    Jan 10 2022

Well, that’s a wrap! Season 4, Episode 6 of the Healthy Ageing Podcast.

Exactly 5 months ago we embarked on our podcast adventure, at that point we had no real idea how it would all pan out but we knew we wanted to bring conversations with interesting, inspirational people to help add value to anyone interested in healthy ageing. We have had the best time doing just that and we have learned SO much along the way.

Our format over the last 5 months has been to dedicate 6 consecutive weeks to each of our 4 pillars - mindset, nutrition, fitness and skincare and to deliver the podcast weekly. Well, we have decided to change things up a bit and we are super excited about the changes. We are going to be taking a little break from recording the podcasts so we can really dive back into the amazing content that has already been delivered and re-share some of that. We will be returning in March on a bi-weekly basis and we won’t be so structured in our format. What we WILL be continuing to do is bring you amazing and interesting conversation around healthy ageing!

Have a listen to this podcast to hear us talk about what we have learned and why we are making these changes.

Thanks to EVERYONE that has tuned in and we’ll see you for more fresh content in March! In the meantime, please help us to share the healthy ageing message by sending your favourite episode to a friend.

  • Healthy Ageing Skin with Catherine Freeman
    Jan 10 2022

It was a first for the HA podcast this week when we spoke with a guest for the second time! The amazing Catherine Freeman joined us again and this time she was sharing SO much knowledge on skincare. We originally spoke with Catherine back in series 1 where she discussed Healthy Ageing mindset but we always knew we would love to have her back when this series came around.

Catherine is a highly successful entrepreneur running a global business. She is one of the most genuine and kindest human beings and an absolute hoot - can you tell we are big fans?! Catherine attributes her huge business success to taking action, manifestation and mindset so was a perfect fit in series 1! However her background is actually in Beauty Therapy and she was a successful salon owner for many many years having been inspired by her big sister. In her beauty rooms Catherine was always one step ahead of the current trends and spent thousands of pounds on the most up to date technology in anti ageing devices. When she was introduced to hand held anti ageing devices she knew that would be a trend and it was those devices that took her career on a different path.

Catherine gives some amazing advice on this podcast including what products you should prioritise depending on your age and the differences between the types of products. Anti ageing skincare is discussed in detail but this podcast really is for anyone! One of the things we love most about Catherine is that she lives her whole life with ‘healthy ageing’ in mind. She looks amazing which is due to how she lives her life, what she feeds her body and mind and the products that she uses. Get your pen and paper ready!

Catherine discusses various skincare devices during the podcast and we are delighted to be offering our Healthy Ageing Podcast listeners a 20% discount on the range that Catherine uses. If you need any further information please get in touch with us.

  • Healthy Ageing Skin with Sharon Comrie
    Jan 3 2022

The first podcast of 2022 and we could not think of a better guest or subject matter to kick start us into 2022.

This week our guest is is a great friend of ours and successful entrepreneur, Sharon Comrie. Sharon is award winning in her field  and someone we respect massively for her knowledge and love of all things science when it comes to Nu Skin products. We actually have Sharon 5 minutes notice and she came in and absolutely blew us away - that is a testament to her passion for what she does.

This podcast is all about collagen! Sharon discusses the scientific benefits of using collagen and how collagen products on the market can differ greatly. She goes into great detail on Beauty Focus Collagen+ which has launched in the USA and will be coming to the UK later this year. This product is fully backed by science and years of research and it’s truly fascinating to hear about this and also to hear about the results people are having with it.

If you have any interest in the benefits of using collagen and how it can help with healthy ageing you will not want to miss this one!

  • Healthy Ageing Skin with Katie Begley
    Dec 27 2021

Season 4, episode 3 of the podcast and we are continuing our discussions on skincare.

This week we were joined by Katie Begley from Cocoahous. Katie is a skin expert who ‘gives no-nonsense advice and guidance about how to look the best you can no matter who you are’. It was another conversation filled with insight and experience (over 30 years worth!)

During the conversation there were a few discussions that came up that we were familiar with including the importance of hydration and a healthy balanced diet when it comes to skincare. However there were also a few new topics for us which were really interesting!

At Cocoahous Katie provides bespoke skincare solutions and believes that there’s no ‘one size fits all’ when it comes to taking care of your skin. She provides a skin consultation and will then be your skin mentor, giving advice on what products you need depending on your age and skin goals.

Part of this process often involves a personalised Facial Exercise programme. Facial exercise is repetitive motions and exaggerated facial expressions, carried out in short bursts of time. These trained movements tighten and tone the small muscles, which in turn improves skin elasticity, reducing fat pads under the skin.
By strengthening these small muscle groups on a regular basis you can create a toned and leaner face. Think yoga for your face! Katie was inspired by Eva Fraser’s book to incorporate this into her programme - https://www.evafraser.com

Katie believes in ageing healthily and wisely without intervention and mentors her clients on all aspects of this including how to make your own, natural beauty products. Katie discusses this process in some detail in the podcast.

If you find skincare really confusing and are never sure of what products to buy and what will work best for you this podcast may just help with that! We would love to hear what you thought.

  • Healthy Ageing Skin with Fiona McMahon
    Dec 20 2021

Season 4, episode 2 of the Healthy Ageing podcast where we are continuing our discussion on Skincare. This week Susie is flying solo (no Lorraine) but is joined by an absolute expert in all things skin - Fiona McMahon from Salon Allure.

Fiona has been in the beauty industry for over 20 years and has a wealth of experience across all areas of the industry. When she started she was all about the glam and loved helping people with external transformations - lashes, tan, nails etc. Following the break-up of her marriage she went back to college to complete her HNC in Beauty Therapy but was unhappy with elements of the training so continued her education privately and trained with some of the biggest names in the industry. It was at this time that she found her passion for skin and with a love of science she has a deep understanding of HOW products work and what actually works to help people to achieve what they are looking for when it comes to skincare.

At her salon she works with a number of devices including the CACI machine which offers non-surgical facelifts and if you visit Fiona she will give you a completely bespoke or prescription facial depending on your wants and needs - there is no one size fits all! We think that speaks volumes to Fiona’s skills and expertise.

This discussion covered a lot! From the basics required if you are looking to get started with a skincare routine to what peptides are and why they are important and how to implement and use a retinol product.

Something that we loved about this one was the holistic discussion around skincare and the importance of eating well, hydrating and using supplements within your routine. Fiona said ‘people underestimate the power of combining skincare with internal care, it takes your skin to a whole new level’.

This was an education for us and Fiona has an amazing way of explaining what can be a confusing subject matter! We absolutely loved it. Have a listen and let us know what you think!

  • Healthy Ageing Skin with Susie and Lorraine
    Dec 13 2021

The beginning of a brand new season - how exciting! Season 4 is all about skincare and as with the start of every new season this one begins with Susie and Lorraine talking about this topic!

Neither of us are experts in the skincare field but we both have a real passion for and love of the products we get to work with in our Nu Skin businesses and the ways we get to help people overcome concerns they have with their skin or to look younger.

In this conversation we both admit that we didn’t have in depth skincare routines until we started learning about and seeing results from the products we were using in Nu Skin. Susie was a soap and Oil of Olay girl and Lorraine was a product junkie with a bathroom FULL of products that never gave her the results she was looking for and she never finished a product and bought it again, there was always a search for the next best product with hundreds of £‘s being spent along the way!

We talk about our current routines and also the amazing devices that we work with and also the science and research that goes into the products that we now use and recommend to others. You will learn so much more about these things from our experts each week but as always we give you our take to kick off the season.

We have had so much fun and learned so much hearing from our guests about Healthy Ageing Mindset, Nutrition and Fitness and we have some cracking guests lined up for this season too. As always please let us know what you think!

  • Healthy Ageing Fitness with Brenda Dougan
    Dec 6 2021

Last but by NO MEANS least. In Series 6 we speak with our BIGGEST fan – Brenda Dougan! She listens to all our podcasts, gives us feedback and shares us on social media! Brenda is the co-owner of CrossFit Fife and owns the gym alongside our very own podcast host, Susie. Lorraine use to offer admin and business support to the gym and so this was a very special podcast for all 3 people involved.

Brenda has been doing CrossFit since 2010, is in her 50s and can definitely still kick butt with many of the younger members in the gym. This lady holds the keepie uppie* champion at a local Fife school which has now closed (so no one can ever beat her!) played football from a young age and played for Glenrothes ladies. She found her love for CrossFit initially through Kettlebells, and in the gym she is known as the master of Kettlebells. She has competed many times and even got 1st 1st place at Form Fitness masters 2016 (same sex pairs), yet doing this podcast was the most nerve racking thing she has ever done! She was totally out her comfort zone however she shared amazing information on how to stay young and her passion for CrossFit and helping others truly shines during this chat.

Did Lorraine know what an American Kettlebell swing is??? Is she secretly doing CrossFit??? This is something else that was discussed when Brenda spoke about what CrossFit is, why it is different and what to expect when you come along to CrossFit Fife.

Brenda is definitely a person who lives her life to the full alongside her hubby John who loves an Empire Biscuit from Stephens The Baker – its all about balance guys and implementing the 80/20 rule!! What even does all that mean??? You will need to listen to find out.

We also spoke about the crazy challenges that Brenda does. So every year for the past 5 years Brenda has completed a 3 hour fitness challenge which raises money and awareness for a miscarriage awareness helpline. So you think that’s crazy, wait until you hear the next one - every year for the past 10 years she completes crazy challenges to raise funds for Cancer. This year was her last one in where she completed 24 workouts in 24 hours – 1 workout an hour. Sounds horrible???? Not as horrible as the year before when she climbed Ben Nevis with 2 16kg kettlebells. So how does she recover from these crazy challenges? Really well because she knows the importance of stretch, cold water therapy, mobility and eating well. As she says “look after your body and it will serve you well”

Brenda’s message was simple, yet very powerful - do what you love live a life full of fun, be kind to others, prioritise family, workout and eat well.

If you want to follow Brenda or know more about CrossFit Fife then here is all the information you need to know:

  • Healthy Ageing Fitness with Charlie Blair
    Nov 29 2021

It is so important that as we age, we are able to adapt and not become “too stuck in our ways” and so with today’s episode we are taking you completely out your comfort zone! The podcast starts differently, there is only one host and instead of having the main focus on prevention the focus is on how to have fun later on in life.

In Series 3 Episode 5, Charlie Blair who is the founder of The Blair Academy shares her 3 top tips by listening to many mature adults over the years while working in care and throughout her business. The Blair Academy brings Hip Hop dance to care homes – how amazing is that.

The Blair Academy launched in June 2018 after Charlie combined her professional and personal experiences together. While studying at university she became a carer for the elderly through her Nans encouragement, Doreen Blair. In Charlies last year at university her Nan was diagnosed with stage 4 lung cancer and was given an exercise plan to keep her as healthy as possible during those last months. Doreen was 67 and didn’t love the plan! The love Charlie had for her Nan and the dancer and creator in her made her adapt her Nans plan. The plan focused on Hip Hop dance within a chair and was carried out in the Livingroom. Doreen loved it, making her feel happier and more youthful. She then said to Charlie “there must be other older people that would love to do this.” Some local care homes allowed Charlie to come into the home to try it out on their residents. Thank goodness for forward thinking and innovative care homes.

This episode is so amazing because it is very different from others and there is a lot of information shared not only on Hip Hop dance but on the care sector as well. Susie and Lorraine would actually like to take this opportunity to recognise all the amazing carers out there – what a huge difference they make. Thank you.

There was a real focus on looking at more fun, innovate, forward thinking activities for the elderly and Charlie gave a shout out to the posh Club who are also doing great with this. You can find them on Instagram - @the_posh_club or via their website www.theposhclub.co.uk

The Healthy Ageing Podcast would love to help The Blair Academy be known by so many more care homes around the UK and Ireland so please do share this podcast with EVERYONE you know that works in the care sector. The Blair Academy can provide a service in person within the care homes, a 1 to 1 virtual class or with their DVD service. Every Tuesday afternoon a free virtual zoom class is available to care homes and to the more mature person living independently at home. You can find them:

    Instagram - @theblairacademy

    Website - www.theblairacademy.com

And also, if you search for The Blair Academy on You Tube

Watch out for their NEW platform, the BA box, which brings new innovative entertainment into care homes with dance and fitness sessions along with singers, musicians, spoken word artists etc. This is launching in December.  If the elderly can’t get out to the theatre, then the Blair Academy will bring it to them.
