Last but by NO MEANS least. In Series 6 we speak with our BIGGEST fan – Brenda Dougan! She listens to all our podcasts, gives us feedback and shares us on social media! Brenda is the co-owner of CrossFit Fife and owns the gym alongside our very own podcast host, Susie. Lorraine use to offer admin and business support to the gym and so this was a very special podcast for all 3 people involved.
Brenda has been doing CrossFit since 2010, is in her 50s and can definitely still kick butt with many of the younger members in the gym. This lady holds the keepie uppie* champion at a local Fife school which has now closed (so no one can ever beat her!) played football from a young age and played for Glenrothes ladies. She found her love for CrossFit initially through Kettlebells, and in the gym she is known as the master of Kettlebells. She has competed many times and even got 1st 1st place at Form Fitness masters 2016 (same sex pairs), yet doing this podcast was the most nerve racking thing she has ever done! She was totally out her comfort zone however she shared amazing information on how to stay young and her passion for CrossFit and helping others truly shines during this chat.
Did Lorraine know what an American Kettlebell swing is??? Is she secretly doing CrossFit??? This is something else that was discussed when Brenda spoke about what CrossFit is, why it is different and what to expect when you come along to CrossFit Fife.
Brenda is definitely a person who lives her life to the full alongside her hubby John who loves an Empire Biscuit from Stephens The Baker – its all about balance guys and implementing the 80/20 rule!! What even does all that mean??? You will need to listen to find out.
We also spoke about the crazy challenges that Brenda does. So every year for the past 5 years Brenda has completed a 3 hour fitness challenge which raises money and awareness for a miscarriage awareness helpline. So you think that’s crazy, wait until you hear the next one - every year for the past 10 years she completes crazy challenges to raise funds for Cancer. This year was her last one in where she completed 24 workouts in 24 hours – 1 workout an hour. Sounds horrible???? Not as horrible as the year before when she climbed Ben Nevis with 2 16kg kettlebells. So how does she recover from these crazy challenges? Really well because she knows the importance of stretch, cold water therapy, mobility and eating well. As she says “look after your body and it will serve you well”
Brenda’s message was simple, yet very powerful - do what you love live a life full of fun, be kind to others, prioritise family, workout and eat well.
