Publisher's Summary
The first book in a gripping new series focusing on the early lives of some of the pivotal characters whose stories are later woven together in the award-winning Jacobite Chronicles. This is a companion series and can be enjoyed independently of the Chronicles.
The year is 1731, and in a small village in Cheshire, England, the Reverend Browne has determined the future of his young daughter, Sarah. Her life will be dedicated to caring for him and his household affairs while he, acting as one of God’s chosen few, saves souls from the devil.
Sarah dreams of a different future, one in which she will be happy and independent. As she grows older, she starts to see glimpses of a tantalizing world beyond her reach and longs one day to escape the drudgery of her life, to become part of it all and maybe even have her own business.
However, a chance meeting leads first to joy and blossoming and then to the destruction of her whole world. It changes her life forever, forcing her down a path that is the very opposite of the glittering one she had hoped for, one for which she has to pay a terrible price to survive.

Much loved story about Sarah
It was interesting to find out about Sarah’s childhood past . Fascinating story and very educational at the same time . Love these books . The question is, did Sarah and her Mother ever find each other ? Where did Sarah go at the end of her time with Beth or did she follow her to Scotland ?

Interesting pre story of one character in the main books
I do like the way Julia Brennan writes. She has a lovely way of flowing words together to create mental scenery.
I found the initial part of part of the book a bit slow and repetitive but once the story was in full flight it’s a great read !

Beautifully heartbreaking & powerful!
I always knew Sarah's story would be tragic. Julia really ripped my heart out with this one, but it was so worth it! This is not a romance. The Whore's Tale is the beautifully heartbreaking & powerful story of Sarah's past and how hard she fights to save herself in spite of everything. She is a survivor and a hero who fights to save herself when everyone and everything else repeatedly pushes her down and seems to conspire against her. She is a very interesting character in The Jacobite Chronicles who truly makes a difference in pivotal ways throughout the series. As with every book in the series it is very well written and researched with historical accuracy that really adds an extra layer to the story. I wholeheartedly recommend this whole series!
Will Watt is a master when it comes to duet narration, so it was no surprise that I loved the performances! Mary Jane Wells is a new narrator to me, but she did an excellent job bringing life to Sarah. I'm adding her to my list of talented favorites. Jacobite Chronicles is one of my absolute favorite historical romance audiobook series, so I'm so glad Julia wrote Sarah’s story and released it in audio. I look forward to more back stories for the amazing characters!

A Great Back Story!
You should really read the Jacobite Chronicals before reading this book. The story will stand on its own for sure but you will have a much deeper understanding of the entire story if you read JC series first. the narration is excellent and I love the historical notes at the end. Julia does in-depth research and this makes the stories so much better knowing they are based in the activities of the time period!

If you can make it to the end, (TW: DV)
It is an excellent book but full of tragedy. Sarah’s experiences epitomized the observation “if it weren’t for bad luck, she would have no luck at all.” She grew from a exploited and abused innocent child to a young woman determined to escape her fate and better herself.
Don’t give up out of horror and sadness, keep going. Emulate Sarah.

Another Superb novel in the Jacobite Chronicles series ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
This is a wonderful audiobook, beautifully written with characters you love to love and characters you’ll love to hate. Thought-provoking, emotive and clearly well researched. Although most of the content of this book takes place before the main book 1, Mask of Duplicity (which I’ve listened to umpteen times!), I didn’t feel my listening to this out of sequence lessened my enjoyment. In fact, now I have a strong desire to start Mask again to pick up on some of where Sarah’s tale leaves off!
The dual narration is superb. Will is a master and its great to hear him again in this audiobook. Mary, is new to the Jacobite Chronicles series and I really hope she will be involved with the other books. She has a lovely sound to her voice and doesn’t just read out loud, she really ‘tells’ the story.
Another triumph, thank you Julia!

Well-written, providing more interesting background
I am very fond of these stories and I’m delighted to have heard Sarah’s, gaining some more insight into her character. Having heard her story, there is more to her than meets the eye (or ear) in the original chronicles.
However, I do feel that some storylines were left unfinished. I have no idea what happened to the person searching for her later in the book, which makes me feel that that part of the storyline lacked a purpose. I would also have loved to know what happened to Sarah after the events in the chronicles, but, seeing as this is a background, I suppose it makes sense that I didn’t (though a small epilogue, tying together the unfinished storyline would have been great).
