Publisher's Summary

Go beyond the original Shondaland series on Netflix, Queen Charlotte, with this lushly romantic Bridgerton prequel novel written by New York Times bestselling authors Julia Quinn and Shonda Rhimes as the marriage of Queen Charlotte and King George of England leads to an unexpected love story and a union that transforms society.

In 1761, on a sunny day in September, a King and Queen met for the very first time. They were married within hours.

Born a German Princess, Charlotte of Mecklenburg-Strelitz was beautiful, headstrong, and fiercely intelligent… not precisely the attributes the British Court had been seeking in a spouse for the young King George III. But her fire and independence were exactly what she, and her King, needed.

Because George has secrets… secrets with the potential to shake the very foundations of the monarchy.

Thrust into her new role, Charlotte must navigate the intricate politics of the court—with the newly-titled Lady Danbury at her side—all the while guarding her heart, because she is falling in love with the King…even as he pushes her away. Now, Charlotte must learn to rule, and to understand that she has been given the power to remake society, fulfilling her destiny as Queen. But she also has to fight for the love growing between her and George as people first, royals second. As she says to him: “Fight with me! Fight for me!”

Utterly boring

The most boring book I’ve ever had the displeasure of reading or listening to. Have listened to the entire Bridgerton series and enjoyed them thoroughly but this was a major let down. Performed well but the storyline was rubbish.

Excellent no wonder they made this a series

Absolutely Julia’s best so far.
Great plot and (thankfully) missing the in depth ‘he said / she said’ in past Bridgerton stories are plagued with.

Bitter Sweet

I really enjoyed this story. After having watched the Netflix Series, I enjoyed the extra snippets of detail in the book. I also believe that just like the series, it had the perfect ending.

Sweet story, struggled with the performance

Being so familiar with the narrator from the Bridgerton novels, I really struggled with this narration. I had to keep forcing myself to come back to finish it due to the voice as it didn't sit well with me. I enjoyed the story, but I won't be listening to this one again.

I enjoyed this

Nice story. Very good sequel or prequel to the other Bridgerton books, and really helped explain things, albeit in a very sad way.

Loved it

Way too short I could have listened for ages. Easy to listen too and an absolute must for all Bridgerton fans. Highly recommended.

BRB.. sobbing!

I listened to this audible right after binge watching the 6 episodes of Queen Charlotte on Netflix. I was pleased to find that it VERY closely followed the show which makes sense since it was written concurrently. It was still nice to hear of some scenes that may have been omitted or to learn a little bit more about the background. I hope there is a season 2 or a second book because I think this story is better than the other two Bridgerton seasons. I have read some of the Bridgerton books and this story had a different tone. I’d love to know more about Queen Charlotte’s story.

Excellent

An excellent reader and an excellent story - fictionalized , yes but I don’t want to hear the reality of how ghastly the reality of George’s world would have really been - history is history . Julia’s story’s are for the reader’s entertainment and they do just that !
Thank You !

Lovely

I love fairytales. This one is a beautiful love story. Yep, it is fiction very loosely based on history and it made me feel all the stuff I want to feel when I read a romance. Hope you enjoy as much as I did.

Heart wrenching and joyful!

I loved the way they explained the origins of the king and queen, and what they called “the great experiment”. It would have been wonderful if it had been real in that time. We would be in a much better place today if society had evolved the way the authors described. Love this book!!!! Please expand this series further into the past or the future…I can’t wait to see what you write next!!

Basically a 21st Century Love Story

I love The Bridgerton's series, and this is a good story and well narrated, but it takes issues from 2023 and puts them into 18th century England. When one character is described as "speaking truth to power," I dismissed the "historical" part of fiction. I hope listeners do not believe that Queen Charlotte (who most historians do not consider Black) created a racially integrated England. This is the same Queen Charlotte of Dicken's A Tale of Two Cities and King George the American colonies rebelled against.
To me, it felt like Netflix asked Julia Quinn to write something more diverse than all white people ruling over peasants in a patriarchal society, and she wrote this. It is a good story - it just seems like a modern-day story filled with same-sex love being cherished and appreciated; the understanding and acceptance of mental illness; and a Black queen in a racially diverse Georgian England.
