Mills & Boon presents The Duchess Deal by Tessa Dare.

'I am a Duke. I’m not asking you to marry me. I am offering to marry you. It’s a different thing entirely.’

When the Duke of Ashbury returns from war scarred, he realises he needs an heir - which means he needs a wife! When Emma Gladstone, a vicar's daughter turned seamstress visits wearing a wedding dress, he decides on the spot that she'll do.

His terms are simple:
- They will be husband and wife by night only.
- No lights, no kissing.
- No questions about his battle scars.
- Last, and most importantly...Once she's pregnant with his heir, they need never share a bed again.

But Emma is no pushover. She has secrets and some rules of her own:
- They will have dinner together every evening.
- With conversation.
- And teasing.
- Last, and most importantly...Once she's seen the man beneath the scars, he can't stop her from falling in love....

Narration was awful

I gave it one star for performance because I couldn’t submit otherwise. It is not one star.
I listen to many audiobooks and rarely do I find a book I can not listen to. This was one. Im second chapter in and I’m sending it back, the story never had a chance. It’s almost comically spoken - like a funny story.

Shame the narration killed the story

I enjoyed the storyline but the Duke's voice was dreadful and some of the lusty parts of the book had no feeling in the way they were spoken.

Hot fun!

Laugh out loud, saucy fun! Great narration and a superbly steamy story. Careful where you listen to this one, otherwise everyone in the office will be wondering why you're sweating and blushing so much.

Typical chick-lit, almost ruined by narrator

Firstly, I did (for some reason) enjoy the light story even with the difficult to listen to narration and the inaccuracies of the time period this book was set in. If you find you don't mind books like The Duke and I, then you won't have any trouble with this.

I'm used to listening to my audiobooks at 1.5x but for this one I had to slow it to 0.85x because the words were just garbled and often skipped altogether. I did think my book just downloaded wrong but even re-downloading didn't fix so I instead had to dedicate +8 and a half-ish hrs to the story.

I'm one of those readers who doesn't really know (or care) about historical accuracies but even I noticed a few problems... that being said the story itself reads like a girlish fantasy. A simple story with a predictable end, girl meets misunderstood boy, they (8 hours later) fall in love while fighting the attraction the whole book and eventually live happily ever after (sorry for the spoiler). I didn't mind the simple with some comical humour that was meant to be set in a sort of Regency period. It was fine if all you're after is a love story but if you're a heavy historical fiction/Regency expert you might have trouble...

I might buy the other books eventually, just to hear how the other girls fare in their love stories but for now I don't feel a rush to go and buy the other 3 (at the time of writing this)

Sweet love story

A lot is wrong with the story; the language is too modern, the Duke's voice hasn't been narrated well and the story is quite simple. However, I still enjoyed it. A nice, easy, relaxed novel to listen to

Cute story but a ‘chick flick’

Cute story and I enjoyed the chemistry between our lovers but I was distracted by the historical inaccuracies regarding how the world worked at that time. While I enjoyed it, the story way as realistic as any ‘chick flick’ and I couldn’t get into it as much as I was hoping. Worth a listen but don’t expect much to be realistic for the time.
Also the narrator’s voice for our hero was too comical for the setting - loved her voice for the heroine though! I have mixed feelings about this book/recording but overall a feel-good chick flick.

Fun Regency romance and a great narrator

First Tessa Dare book I’ve read and I enjoyed every minute, so much that I downloaded the other 2 x Girl Meets Duke books in this series. Great characters and unique stories and quite a few laugh out loud moments in all three. I truly enjoyed Mary Jane Wells narration of all three - especially the male hero’s, I’m only disappointed she hasn’t narrated more Tessa Dare books. Not sure why another reviewer didn’t like her I thought she was awesome!

By far THE best book I've listened to!

If I had to recommend only one book in the regency genre, this would be it!

This book never gets old! This must be the third or fourth time I've listened to it. What makes this book such a hit is the perfect mix of a great story, hilarious witticisms and outstanding narration which seems to bring every character to life and give the story colour and vibrance. It also includes some of the most steamiest sex scenes I have ever encountered in a book (just quietly) so be prepared!

Cute, sweet, lacking in tension

I dunno, there's a lot I like about it - Dare is great at writing damaged people who deserve love, and she has a lovely warm and gentle humour - it just feels like every time a problem arises, it gets sorted out very quickly, as if most of the book is the HEA epilogue. The dramatic tension just isn't very high.

Still a decent listen, though, and the reader is lively and entertaining to listen to.

Disappointing

Due to a change in publisher, this title came out several months after its original date. Having finally been able to listen to the book, I'm very sorry to say that it has come as something of an anticlimax.

I have read or listened to several Tessa Dare books, including the Castles Ever After, and the Spindle Cove series. Mostly (but not always) her books have been a hit with me, witty, well paced, and with really lovable characters. The first three Spindle Cove books are wonderful, after that, not so much. The cross-over book Do You Want To Start A Scandal was frankly bizarre.

When I read the blurb for The Duchess Deal it sounded like Dare had finally got back on track. When I found out that Mary Jane Wells was narrating the audiobook I was delighted. I am a big fan of Wells, and so waited the extra few months for the audiobook to come out, though the hard back was available much earlier.

The beginning section of this book is just as I had hoped. Lots of witty dialogue with two good quality leads, and some laugh out loud moments. Ash and Emma both have a lot of emotional baggage, but are both quite pragmatic with a shared dark humour. Ash's attempts to enjoy his wedding night are wonderfully calamitous, and his determination to keep a 'stiff upper lip' quite adorable.

For me, the book dipped terribly in the middle. Here, we are introduced to some of the characters who will become main characters in later books in the series. I felt this section was so obviously about setting up future books, and really broke the flow of Ash and Emma's story. These characters appear heavily in this middle section, and then disappear before making a brief reappearance near the end of the book. It just didn't feel natural, and I lost interest in the book, and didn't return to it for a few weeks.

The final section of the book was better, but to be honest I just didn't feel that there had been much emotional development between Ash and Emma. They seem to have sex every other minute, but there were no real moments of intimacy between the two. There were no proper descriptions of the two eating meals with each other, reading books, talking about their childhoods, laughing, sharing non-sexual touch... any of the scenes that normally make you feel all warm and fuzzy. Throughout they really struggled with intimacy, and 'witty banter' characterised nearly all of their conversations, which got really tedious.

It is quite a short book, and it felt like there wasn't time for some of the better elements to really shine. Ash's relationship with a local lad Trevor had the potential to be comedy gold, but it flagged until it became necessary as a plot device.

Wells does a good job, but as the book lacked emotional depth, so did her performance.

All in all, I don't think this will be a re-listen for me, and I'm not too fussed about listening to the rest of the series either.

Started well

This could have been so much better had it continued as it started. As the tale went on it focused on sex. Not always a bad thing but I would have preferred to know more about the characters.
I feel it’s a bit of a cop out to continually write about sex in this case.
Just my opinion. Not that best but certainly not the worst.

Couldn't finish it

I tried. I really did. But I just couldn't finish this book. The Duke is as mature as a 12 year old boy and I don't find that appealing. While I enjoy witty banter and humour, they did not have any normal adult conversations which added to the feelings that I was reading a book about children.

There is nothing historical or romantic about this book.

I laughed out loud this was excellent, narration made it so much better her voice, tones and verbal sparing really put across sarcasm and wit in the book.

Humerous

The Hero is a scared, embittered war veteran.
The Heroine a Vicar's daughter down on her luck.
Unusual circumstances bring them together, both decide to take advantage of fate.
Thankfully the story is well written, just a pity that today's world demands a plethora of sex.
The secondary characters are well chosen and boost the story along.

Had promise but lacked something

I listened to A Week to Be Wicked from the Spindle Cove series by this author just before this one, and that book was surprisingly good, so I immediately went off to find the next highest rated book by the author. This one, however, lacked something for me. Some of the humour was a bit too slapstick, and the story felt a bit more shallow. It certainly had potential and I’m sure some people love it, but it was just missing that extra thing that draws me in. I’d definitely recommend the other book I mentioned though.

Amusing

Not for the Regency purist as manners, servants etc are not true to the period. It is laugh out loud funny in places though and the narrator is brilliant.
