Ann Rule was working on the biggest story of her career, tracking the trail of victims left by a brutal serial killer. Little did this future best-selling author know that the savage slayer she was hunting was the young man she counted among her closest friends. Everyone's picture of a natural winner, Ted Bundy was a bright, charming, and handsome man with a promising future as an attorney. But on January 24, 1989 Bundy was executed for the murders of three young women - and had confessed to taking the lives of at least thirty-five more women from coast to coast.

Jenn Corbin appeared to have it all: two dear little boys, a posh home in one of the upscale suburbs of Atlanta, expensive cars, a plush houseboat, and a husband - Dr. Bart Corbin, a successful dentist - who was tall, handsome, and brilliant. But gradually, their seemingly idyllic life together began to crumble. Bart was distraught and Jenn seemed disenchanted. Then, just a few weeks before Christmas 2004, Jenn was found dead with a bullet in her head, an apparent suicide....

Story
Verteran investigative journalist Stevie Cameron first began following the story of missing women in 1998, when the odd newspaper piece appeared chronicling the disappearances of drug-addicted sex trade workers from Vancouver's notorious Downtown Eastside. It was not until February 2002 that pig farmer Robert William Pickton would be arrested, and 2008 before he was found guilty, on six counts of second-degree murder. These counts were appealed and in 2010, the Supreme Court of Canada rendered its conclusion.

Narrator makes for a fascinating account
In a just world, Gary Ridgway would've been caught many years earlier. But hindsight is a wonderful thing.
Barbara Caruso does a great job narrating, but there is some fluff that could've been omitted. In any case, a shocking, yet fascinating account of one of America's most prolific serial killers.

An Engaging, In-Depth and Unflinching Account
Ann Rule writes with intelligence and compassion about the victims, their families and the police investigation. The backgrounds she gives on the victims and the Green River Killer himself and their respective upbringings is detailed and well researched. A gruesome but interesting read.

The author has her favourite victims for sure.
Good story if you can hang in there the author is all over the place . Some victims more than others gets her going she just woffles on about some and others only get 3 lines of talk time. Not sure why she wrote the book like this for as much could have been omitted. I should have got the unabridged version .
More could have been said about investigation and what went on but I'm no author or at least don't claim to be.

slow but worth it
the story was slow off the ground which was frustrating at times, but the women do deserve to have their stories told. clearly an unbelievable amount of research done, as most victims had their own 20-40 minute biography. this had far fewer personal ramblings than Stranger Beside Me which I couldn't finish. the chapters on the killer and police investigation were most interesting and fast paced, however I stand by the fact that the victims' stories are important, if you can make it through and keep track of all the names

I’ve read the book many years ago so it was great to hear it again. Anne always does a wonderful job in capturing all the details and doing real justice to the memories of the victims. Thoroughly recommend this book 👍🏽

An amazing story told over more than two decades
Ann Rule is truly the Queen of True Crime Writing! This story was told with the utmost sensitivity to the victims (& their families); by detailing victimologies, and giving us a greater sense of why, and how these poor women ended up becoming chosen by Gary Ridgeway in his brutal reign of terror.
➡️ (NB/ and this is *NOT* rambling on about unnecessary details, as one insensitive reviewer summed up their review… ?!)
Hot Tip: if you’re looking for gore, rent a horror movie.
If you’re interested in sophisticated TrueCrime, then this is *definitely* for you!

Heartbreaking
This is the first Ann Rule book I have listened to and I’m definitely going to be listening to more, she is excellent author and I think Barbra’s narration is also excellent. It’s a long listen but it’s a long story. The heartbreak these families must have suffered with for all those years is unfathomable.
I think Ann showed respect to the victims while still highlighting the work they were partaking in at the time. She never blamed them and I think she broached the subject in a great way and spoke more about the girls life before the streets and made sure to mention their positive attributes instead of focusing mainly on the sex work.
I also appreciate how Ann didn’t mention his name until the police identified the killer. As someone who knew the story, I knew his name, but Ann refers to the killer as “him” for a lot of the book. Even when talking about his childhood, it’s always “he/him” instead of his name. He doesn’t deserve to have his name uttered and I appreciate that Ann didn’t name him constantly throughout the book.
I also feel for his third wife. I do believe she didn’t know and I can’t imagine having my life turned upside down like that.
Most of all my heart goes out to all the families and I’m truly thankful this monster is off the streets forever
