About this listen

Bonus material! Includes an excerpt from John Douglas and Mark Olshaker’s Obsession!

Discover the classic behind-the-scenes chronicle of John E. Douglas' 25-year career in the FBI Investigative Support Unit, where he used psychological profiling to delve into the minds of the country's most notorious serial killers and criminals - the basis for the upcoming Netflix original series.

In chilling detail, the legendary Mindhunter takes us behind the scenes of some of his most gruesome, fascinating, and challenging cases - and into the darkest recesses of our worst nightmares.

During his 25-year career with the Investigative Support Unit, Special Agent John Douglas became a legendary figure in law enforcement, pursuing some of the most notorious and sadistic serial killers of our time: the man who hunted prostitutes for sport in the woods of Alaska, the Atlanta child murderer, and Seattle's Green River killer, the case that nearly cost Douglas his life.

As the model for Jack Crawford in The Silence of the Lambs, Douglas has confronted, interviewed, and studied scores of serial killers and assassins, including Charles Manson, Ted Bundy, and Ed Gein, who dressed himself in his victims' peeled skin. Using his uncanny ability to become both predator and prey, Douglas examines each crime scene, reliving both the killer's and the victim's actions in his mind, creating their profiles, describing their habits, and predicting their next moves.

As someone who thoroughly enjoyed the Fincher show, this was a fascinating read to hear the source material and see where the series could have gone. It's written quite directly, not much fat on it. Made it through in a weekend.

In lieu of a third season...

A first hand account into the creation of Criminal Profiling and a look at some of the most well known cases from the 70's to early 90' from the person who was called in to help solve them.

I think what most surprised me was the use of language that is so well known in our pop-culture. The terms that have been widely used in TV shows and movies were real, and coined by those who started the Behavioural Science Units. It almost made it seem like I was listening to one of these TV shows - except the storyline are not fictional.

This book was highly fascinating and deeply disturbing, not a feel good read but for those who love reading into true crime, a must-read.

Both fascinating and disturbing

Very enjoyable listen, the book goes through various cases the author has been involved with and offers interesting psychological profiles of many serial offenders. The Netflix series actually is quite close in many aspects, both are great for True Crime enthusiasts.

Riveting, hard to stop listening

A very interesting book. I am a big fan of the tv show and am still upset that they are not continuing it. This book is great as you can see how things could finish. The book is a bit dated now as the Green River Killer and BTK have been arrested. It is still fascinating and recommended to those interested in this subject.

Excellent

This is an incredible book, and I would highly recommend it. It can be gruesome at some points, but John Douglas provides such a rich psychological story of how and why people commit heinous acts.

Genuinely, one of my absolute favourite books. The narration is sublime, perfectly capturing Johns dry humour as well.

One of my favourite books
