Editorial reviews

In celebration of its 70th Anniversary, this is the complete and unabridged audiobook of Diary of a Young Girl, the memoir written by Anne Frank and narrated beautifully by English actress Helena Bonham Carter. The tragic early teenage years of Anne’s life that she documented in her diary are as powerful now as it was when it was first discovered and published in the years after World War II. Audible listeners will revisit or discover Anne’s intimate account of survival and family. A heartbreaking memoir from one young witness to a senseless and terrible war.

Publisher's Summary

Brought to you by Penguin.

Narrated by Helena Bonham Carter.

The Diary of Anne Frank Is 'A Monument to The Human Spirit'

One of the most famous accounts of living under the Nazi regime comes from the diary of a 13-year-old Jewish girl, Anne Frank. Edited by her father Otto H. Frank and German novelist Mirjam Pressler, this is a true story to be rediscovered by each new generation.

12th July 1944:

'It's difficult in times like these: ideals, dreams and cherished hopes rise within us, only to be crushed by grim reality. It's a wonder I haven't abandoned all my ideals, they seem so absurd and impractical. Yet I cling to them because I still believe, in spite of everything, that people are truly good at heart.'

In the summer of 1942, fleeing the horrors of the Nazi occupation, Anne Frank and her family were forced into hiding in the back of an Amsterdam warehouse.

Aged 13, Anne kept a diary of her time in the secret annexe. She movingly revealed how the eight people living under these extraordinary conditions coped with hunger, the daily threat of discovery and death and isolation from the outside world.

A thought-provoking record of tension and struggle, adolescence and confinement, anger and heartbreak, the diary of Anne Frank is a testament to the atrocities of the past and a promise they will never be forgotten.

An Endearing Diary

Anne Frank’s diary, which is charming, candid and endearing, is beautifully read by Helena Bonham Carter.

Anne shows wisdom beyond her years, and her frank reflections on life make absorbing listening. I like the way she always appears so cheerful on the outside and only reveals her true feelings to Kitty, her diary.
The diary gives the reader an accurate picture of life for Jews in hiding during the war years, and the hardships they had to endure.

I find this audio book very enjoyable, and it is much more positive than I had expected. The reader is so good, that it seems as though it is Anne herself who is talking.

This book would appeal to anyone, especially to those interested in the prevailing austere conditions during the war. Highly recommended.

Extremely personal

Wow. I have had the opportunity to read my Sons diary . But I have never betrayed that trust he exhibits when he leaves the book lying around.
I felt more than a little intrusive as I read some of Anne the teenagers private words. Her prose is so innocent and forthright. There is no other motive than a young lady simply putting her days in to words.
On reading it I felt privileged and a little nosey.
Upon finishing it I cried and realised how important this young girls diaries are.

God Bless you Anne Frank

It gets me each time, what a tragedy. I won't say a waste of life because I'm sure Anne's story has saved so many lives.

Life Changer - no matter how old you are

An easy book to listen too because it was engaging and very well read. I feel like I understand our world history so much more because this book not only taught me history but really inspired to research more on my own as well. Poor Anne. thanku for your diary. How horrible the human race truly is.

Could not be more relevant in 2020

This book was truely amazing and so insightful, I would often forget that young Anne was only 13-15 while writing this. Helena also did a great job depicting Anne's and ultimately brought me to tears in the end.

Incredible

Best book I ever read. Anne Frank was a genius, I believe children across the globe should read this by the age of 15. Simply marvellous.

Loved it

The narrator was great, they really made you feel like you were listening to Anne talk herself. I loved getting to know Anne, a fire cracker and wise. She was definitely ahead of her time with her views on misogyny and bi sexuality. It's hard to not identify with who she was.
A terrific account of events from the past that is insightful.
