About this listen

“The soul should be elevated by the ideal, the beautiful, the sublime.”

This collection of Edgar Allan Poe’s stories, essays, and poems showcases the full spectrum of his talent—from the macabre to the melancholic, the mysterious to the metaphysical. Alongside chilling tales like The Tell-Tale Heart, The Fall of the House of Usher, and The Pit and the Pendulum, sit haunting poems such as The Raven and Annabel Lee, and his essays reveal a sharp intellect and the pioneering mind that helped shape modern literary criticism and the detective genre.

This collection contains more than 160 of Poe’s short stories, poems, his two novels, and a selection of his essays, and includes:

  • 'The Raven'
  • 'The Black Cat'
  • 'The Fall of the House of Usher'
  • 'The Gold-Bug'

Edgar Allan Poe (1809–1849) was an American writer, poet, editor and literary critic known for his dark, atmospheric tales and haunting poetry. Widely regarded as one of the most influential figures in American literature, Poe helped shape the horror and science-fiction genres and is widely credited with inventing detective fiction in his 1841 short story, Murders in the Rue Morgue. Despite a life marked by personal tragedy and financial hardship, Poe produced a number of enduring classics such as The Raven, The Tell-Tale Heart, and The Fall of the House of Usher, and since his somewhat mysterious death, he and his writings have had a wide-ranging influence in popular culture. In 1946, the Mystery Writers of America established the annual Edgar award, which honour the best in mystery fiction, non-fiction and film.

Listened to alongside a paperback copy for some of it, so worth noting that some words differed from time to time. Only one I noticed that was a definite error rather than a discrepancy in edition/publication ('external' instead of 'eternal' in one of the poems). A small handful of short poems missing, too.
Instead of reviewing well scrutinised literature, here's my list of highlight titles:
The Gold Bug, The Murders in the Rue Morgue, The Black Cat, The Pit and the Pendulum, The System of Doctor Tarr and Professor Fether, Never Bet the Devil Your Head, Thou Art the Man, The Spectacles and Three Sundays in a Week, and especially Eureka (which was not in my paperback edition).
And some titles I feel are better would've been better left skipped: The Thousand and Second Tale of Scheherazade, X-ing a Paragrab, Mellonta Tauta, The Man That Was Used Up, The Business Man, The Sphinx, Four Beasts in One and Lionising.

Excellent narration; mixed ratings for the stories
