Ruth Galloway has just returned from maternity leave and is struggling to juggle work and motherhood. When a team from the University of North Norfolk, investigating coastal erosion, finds six bodies buried at the foot of the cliff, she is immediately put on the case. DCI Nelson is investigating, but Ruth finds this more hindrance than help – Nelson is the father of her daughter, Kate. Still, she remains professional and concentrates on the case at hand.

Forensic tests prove that the bodies are from Southern Europe, killed sixty years ago. Police Investigations unearth records of Project Lucifer, a wartime plan to stop a German invasion. A further discovery reveals that members of the Broughton Sea’s End Home Guard took a ‘blood oath’ to conceal some deadly wartime secret. The more information they uncover, the more elusive any explanation becomes. When a visiting German reporter is killed, Ruth and Nelson realise that someone is still alive who will kill to keep the secret of Broughton Sea’s End’s war years. Can they discover the truth in time to stop another murder?

i wish it weren't abridged

this does not seem to be available in unabridged format, what a loss! This author is great but much is lost in abridging.

More Ruth Adventures — Fast-paced Narration

Yes, this is the excellent 3rd installment of Ruth Galloway. Audible has 2 options — this one, which is 5+ hrs by Clare Corbett, and another which is 10+ hrs by someone else. PICK THIS ONE. THIS IS NOT ABRIDGED. The extra 5 hrs in the other is all due to slow reading and unwieldy, overly emotional pausing by a narrator who sounds like a breathy adolescent.

By the 3rd volume of a mystery series, the author’s basic model and structure is familiar. So this didn’t grab me as innovative as the first 2. Nevertheless, I’ve come to really like Ruth and the collection of reappearing characters. I learn new aspects of history, and, when Ruth is neither soaked with rain or in danger of drowning, I think it would have been an engaging alternate life.

Boring

A plot that’s as absent as the baby’s father and a plot twist that you can see coming from page 3. It literally felt like the author was having a bad day stuck in with the kids and wanted to vent and hang bothering with the story. I admire anyone who can spent that many pages droning on about being a single parent. I can’t say I would invite Ruth Galloway round to dinner. Far from being an interesting archaeologist she would just be one of those annoying parents who goes on and on about their child for three hours whilst drinking the expensive burgundy.

Not as good as her other books

Really didn’t like some of the accents the narrator used; especially Cathbad’s. Having read a few of her other books, his voice in my head did not sound like a pompous posh bloke. He was brought up in Ireland for goodness sake. Nelson was wrong too, sounded slobby and not on the ball at all. Altogether disappointing. Will read rather than listen to her other books.

A decent story

Not for the first time author uses her books to ridicule Christianity. And the blasphemy is unnecessary and offensive. Otherwise a decent plot and start to a book I could not finish.

Excellent narrator - this time!

I picked the abridged version of this book in order to avoid the awful narrator who does the full length version. It was well worth it - excellent tale, very well narrated, if a teeny weeny bit far-fetched just once or twice. But leaves you wanting the next instalment.

Not what I had in mind at all

I found this story very disappointing. Thought it would have more depth but sadly not
