Story
Aren has lived by the rules all his life. He's never questioned it; that's just the way things are. But then his father is executed for treason, and he and his best friend, Cade, are thrown into a prison mine, doomed to work until they drop. Unless they can somehow break free.... But what lies beyond the prison walls is more terrifying still. Rescued by a man who hates him yet is oath-bound to protect him, pursued by inhuman forces, Aren slowly accepts that everything he knew about his world was a lie.

Story
A richly textured, darkly evocative fantasy set in a beautifully realised fantasy world, the Saramyr trilogy tells the story of an empire that rules over a land being overwhelmed by evil. An evil that comes from within the empire's centre, a sect of magicians close to the throne intent on killing any child born with magical powers. But now the empress has given birth to just such a child and revolution is brewing. Akin to the works of Robin Hobb, this is a hugely involving fantasy set in a world with an enticing oriental flavour.

The Catenan Republic—the Hierarchy—may rule the world now, but they do not know everything. I tell them my name is Vis Telimus. I tell them I was orphaned after a tragic accident three years ago, and that good fortune alone has led to my acceptance into their most prestigious school. I tell them that once I graduate, I will gladly join the rest of civilized society in allowing my strength, my drive, and my focus—what they call Will—to be leeched away and added to the power of those above me, as millions already do. As all must eventually do.

Publisher's Summary
A Tale of the Ketty Jay. Frey is the captain of the Ketty Jay, leader of a small and highly dysfunctional band of layabouts. An inveterate womaniser and rogue, he and his gang make a living on the wrong side of the law, avoiding the heavily armed flying frigates of the Coalition Navy. With their trio of ragged fighter craft, they run contraband, rob airships, and generally make a nuisance of themselves. So a hot tip on a cargo freighter loaded with valuables seems like a great prospect for an easy heist and a fast buck. Until the heist goes wrong, and the freighter explodes.
Suddenly Frey isn't just a nuisance anymore - he's public enemy number one, with the Coalition Navy on his tail and contractors hired to take him down. But Frey knows something they don't. That freighter was rigged to blow, and Frey has been framed to take the fall. If he wants to prove it, he's going to have to catch the real culprit. He must face liars and lovers, dogfights and gunfights, Dukes and daemons. It's going to take all his criminal talents to prove he's not the criminal they think he is.
Rupert Degas has narrated over 100 audiobooks. He has recorded a diverse range of authors, from Andy McNab, James Patterson, Wilbur Smith, and Chris Ryan to children's authors such as Derek Landy, Darren Shan, Jamie Rix, and Philip Pullman. Firefly lives!!
If, like me, you still mourn the loss of the Firefly TV series then this is a balm for your wounds. Group of motley misfits with mysterious back-stories struggle against stacked odds.
Having read the books and loved them, I was a bit hesitant to try the audio version but that was put to rest in very short order by Rupert Degas superb narration (one of the few non-aussies who can do a credible aussie accent). Was equally gutted when I found out that the remaining books had never been released in audio format so imagine my delight when I saw the confirmation that these are to be released shortly.
Thoroughly entertaining and absolutely begging to be optioned for a high budget TV series - you listening Amazon Prime??

Stumbled, Tumbled...but no Grumbles.
I stumbled on this after a conversation with very literate English Lit teacher who appreciates Josh Whedon a little more than life itself. He mentioned the 'Firefly" similarity and that almost put me off. I LOVE Firefly and I'm not into imitations. They so often tend towards flattery and lose all sense of story.
Then I started to read and tumbled head-over-heels into a world that made me laugh, gasp and cheer. This is the real Steam-punk, heartless-romantic, full-throttle fun I've been looking for. And Mr Wooding can write both characters and dialogue.
If you like an anti-hero with a heart of gilt, then Captain Frey is your man. Irresistible to women, relationally caustic, self-interested to a fault, he leads the most unlikely of cobbled together crews on a journey into grudgingly heroic community.
Thank the Allsoul that there are more books in the series. C'mon audible - record them!
And as for Rupert Degas.....what is there to say other than "BRILLIANT"!
Encore.

A cracking story and Rupert Degas!
After more than 150 audio books, I've got to say that Rupert Degas is the best narrator I've heard. He's a legend, with a breadth of voices unmatched, and the ability to bring a story alive. It was his narration alone that lead me to download this story.
That being said, I'm really glad I did. Chris Wooding has written a story that is great fun with lots of action. Set in a steam punk world, and following the antics of an airship crew, there is never a dull moment!
I hope they make more in this series, as I'd certainly listen to them. Reading Chris's blog, he doesn't know if that's going to happen. Fingers crossed!

I didn’t know I liked steampunk until I read this
Up till now I have only read fantasy by the likes of Robert Jordan, Brandon Sanderson, Patrick rothfus, etc. a friend suggested I have a read of retribution falls, and I was hooked! Amazing story, great characters and expertly narrated by Rupert Degas, who did the rothfus books
A must read
