The blinding pacing at the start mixed with info dumps and the odd character interactions now and then detract a from the book, but the concept is solid and its interesting to explore the Taoist/Eastern inspired magical world.

Great story, great characters. I just wish the reader knew proper English. It's not leaped, it is lept. as much as I enjoyed the story, the North American English is thick in this one.

I avoided this series for a long time. I shouldn't have - it's brilliant. A very easy read, the world building is top notch, the action exciting and the characters fun, all without getting too complicated. Some books are an effort to wade through. This is a breeze, the sort I found myself staying up late for and listening on audio to at every available moment.

Other people have described the story well enough so I'll be brief here, but in summary the book is about a person born without magical skills in a world where everyone has them. Instead of giving up, through raw grit, determination, trickery and just a touch of celestial intervention, he starts a journey to great power that will span a 12 book series.

This is the classic hero's journey of David Eddings with a magic systems reminiscent of Brandon Sanderson, without getting too overly complicated. It's a 100% fun ride.

I have very high standards in the books I read. And I've just binged the first 10 books in this series - take that for whatever you think it's worth. 11/10 would recommend.

if you like progression fantasy start this! I have read and listened to 100s of books and the cradle series is the top 3 all time favourite that I would recommend to anyone. I should probably add that Travis Baldree can breath life in to any story good or bad and this is not a bad story. give Travis a good well written story and he will give you back a masterpiece
