Publisher's Summary

A new space fantasy from Will Wight, the New York Times best-selling author of the Cradle series.

“To survive in this galaxy, you need a wand in one hand and a gun in the other.”

On a little-known planet, Archmage Varic Vallenar casts a grand spell to empower himself with the magical abilities of his alternate selves. The ritual works too well, granting Varic not only the magic but also the memories from six lives.

Including their gruesome deaths.

Now, Varic has power greater than any wizard in galactic history, but he knows that won’t be enough. The enemies he faced in those alternate lives were apocalyptic in scale. Terrors of technology and magic. Nothing that he, or anyone, can defeat.

Sun-eating extra-dimensional insects, shadowy secret organizations, genetically enhanced alien super-soldiers, ruthless megacorporations, and hordes of cyborg undead all lurk in the darkest corners of the galaxy, and Varic knows that any of them can become a world-ending threat at any moment.

All these are beyond any wizard, no matter how many spells he’s mastered or how many interstellar warships he’s rallied to his cause. Hopeless, Varic finds himself trying to preserve what little he can from the coming doom.

Until he hears rumors of a mythical starship, an invincible vessel of heroes made to do battle against galactic threats.

A ship called The Last Horizon.

Another flawless victory

This book is just as good as any in the cradle series. Both the author and narrator have done an excellent job. Finally have a great sci-fi to listen to!

I had fun

It was an entertaining book but much like most of the authors other books I’m expecting the future books to really iron out the chemistry.

Loved this book!

I came here from Will Wight’s House Of Blades (which is also a great read) and was not disappointed. I’ve enjoy his writing style and the narrators voices are fantastic. Thoroughly enjoyed this. Off to the next book.

Start of another fantastic series

Loved the book and the amazing narration. Different to your standard progression fantasy. But still the characters do go through growth and evolutions. Can't wait to see what comes next in this series.

Very different from Cradle, and not as good.

While this is still a book written by an obviously talented writer, I unfortunately found The Captain lacking in comparison to the author's other works. The storyline feels piecemeal and forced. Characters seem designed with 'the rule of cool' as a first priority and everything else a distant second. Normally this isn't a problem, and can actually be awesome, but here, the story and logic suffered because of it.

Magical powers seemed to appear out of nowhere whenever it was convenient. There seemed no rhyme or logic to the abilities people could show or use. Literally anything is possible in this universe, with no constraining rules on magical ability except for one that the main character breaks in literally the first chapter. This was a Frankenstein of a book that felt like Mr. Wight just imagined a bunch of really cool ideas, then used hand-wavium to make everything fit together.

This is also a very OP story. That's not bad if you like that kind of thing, but I did feel a bit betrayed going into the novel, as it wasn't highlighted anywhere in the blurb, so take this review as fair warning if you're not into that. The Cradle series is all about a person starting with literally nothing and evolving over the course of 12 books to gain the power of the gods. Here, we start with the main character pretty much a god already. His adventures start and will presumably continue through the series with him taking on God tier enemies, but none of it felt particularly exciting. The stakes were high, but I weren't feeling them. I found myself tuning out more than I found myself tuning in.

Perhaps if you like overpowered characters this novel will have more appeal than it did to me. But even then, it’s less of a well crafted tale, and more of a “let's put all of these ideas and concepts into a blender and try and make a story from them,” than anything else.

Another Winner

From start to finish, there was never a point where I was getting bored or finding a character dull or useless.
And the tea arrangements...🤌

You gotta love the style of Will's creativit. Excellent read, again.

I've listened to all of Will's books. I love the quirkiness of his story telling. His characterisations are meaningful. The stories are clever and always leave you wanting more. Travis is an excellent actor in front of the mike. He reads at a good solid pace, I find a lot over enunciate and read too slow. His characterisations are visually stimulating and really being the narrative to life.
