Publisher's Summary

In a blink, I found myself in an unknown land, greeted by the textbox of an unfriendly system.

It wanted me to become a great hero, save the world, win the love of the people and all that crap. But this new world already had a hero. Why should I bust my ass and deal with dragons and the unknown for people I didn't know? Let him deal with that. It's his job! So instead of being tempted by the system's nonsense, I chose a simple class. Potion maker. I wasn't interested in cultivating mana and defying the heavens, courting death, none of that crap.

Unfortunately, the town I spawned near was suffering crippling inflation, merchants and people were leaving, and they themselves lacked high-demand businesses. The town would soon be going under.

Not if I have anything to say about it.

But will it be that easy to escape fate?

Novel contains: strong MC in a slice-of-life environment, dungeon diving, boss battles, cultivation and elements, mana/magic, MC-exclusive system but it doesn't do the work for him, treasures, adventurers, slow world building, build-up, features that will not be introduced all at once (upgrades so on), actual good loot at the end of very powerful bosses, and romance (no harem). As characters develop throughout the series, issues and emotions and even the MC may find himself in a corner or two. A story of an upcoming potion shopkeeper and his apprentices.

Building an S-ranked potion shop is easier said than done....

Loved it!

Well, it wont be fore everyone.
But I love all the tropes and the not giving an f attitude.
this reminded me of the early HWFWM(he who fights with monsters), it may be a simple beginning but i am excited to see where it goes.
had a great listen and enjoyed it very much.
*as for why it wont be fore everyone, this has a lot of story and world building, less action, which i love... so suck it noobs XD

Mediocre and not actually about cheat potions

There's a lot to like about this book. Unfortunately there's a lot to dislike as well. I find myself able only to give it 4 stars. I'm putting it very firmly in the 'I have better things to do with my life than finish this' pile, because I about 80% of the way through but just can't find the energy to finish it.

SPOILER FREE STORY SUMMARY

Dude wakes up in a different world to find that 'The System' has given him massively OP magical skills and wants him to become 'the hero that saves the world.' He promptly declines the offer, deciding instead to settle in a small town and run a potion shop. Note that despite the name, this book isn't about someone making 'cheat' potions in terms of finding cool ways around game mechanics, but rather just the potions are kinda cheats for real life, e.g., instead of going to a hospital, you can take a health potion to 'cheat' the recovery.

The book has very 'Beware of Chicken' vibes, but is not as well done, and has a bit more violence.

THE GOOD STUFF

Realistic storyline where the MC makes sensible decisions, instead of just running in to be the hero every time there is a problem (even though he does inevitably end up being the hero anyway :/ )

Male narrator is fantastic - one of the best I've heard. Very varied voices and characterisation.

Occasional clever lines, such as this one when he screws up mixing a potion: "The stench of my failure ran through my nose like the ghost of burnt popcorn."

Massively OP MC. If you like this sort of thing, this will be right up your alley. I personally don't, but I do recognise that here, the OP'ness has been done right - it's not about him just winning every fight easily, rather, it's about the character interactions and side issues that occur as this happens.

THE BAD STUFF

Bit of a one trick wonder. The hero constantly going on about how he doesn't want to be a hero (even as he saves the day) gets old after a couple of hours.

Everything is tell, not show. "I felt this, then I did this, which made me feel this way.' Intermissions occur throughout the book which are basically just excuses for random side characters to think very intently about game mechanics or how the world works.

Dialogue tags are overused and frequently inappropriate for the scene. "Did you know there's a town 4 days ride away," she cheerily explained as she yawned.

The female narrator is decent, but her character range isn't as varied and there's something up with her microphone that gives very slight white noise to all her dialogue. I also get the feeling that the two narrators weren't recorded at the same time - back and forth dialogue between them feels stilted and unnatural, as if the female voices have been recorded and played back (which I suspect they have).

I'm sure this worked really well on royal road, but it doesn't work as well as a polished production. Unfortunately, this isn't something I can recommend.

Not too bad

Was pretty good, I don’t write reviews often, I typically star them but writing not so much.

Books great, I don’t like romance that much I These types of books, some light harem yeah but love and devotion not so much. I’m saying that though it wasn’t bad.

The overall story was great and the male voice actor was superb. The females voice I dunno took me over half the book to get used to the dryads voice but I enjoyed this book enough to look past that

4/5 - Book
3/5 - VA, male gets a 5/5

it's ok, but a bit lazy

it's not a bad idea, but the whole overpowered character thing with no effort feels like lazy writing. I found it hard to make it through and I won't be getting the next one.
