Publisher's Summary

On just another average day, Jake finds himself in a forest filled with monsters, dangers, and opportunity....

It was a day like any other when suddenly the world changed. The universe reached a threshold humanity didn’t even know existed, and it was time to finally be integrated into the vast multiverse. A place where power is the only thing anyone can truly rely on.

Jake, a seemingly average office worker, finds himself thrust into this new world. Into a tutorial filled with dangers and opportunities.

His new reality should breed fear and concern. His fellow coworkers falter at every turn. Jake, however, finds himself thriving.

Perhaps... This is the world Jake was meant to be born in.

Another fun listen

Fantasy video game book go brrr. It feels familiar but different enough to be enjoyable.
Narrater is great and was the reason I tried the book in the first place.
Time to crack into the sequels now

A good beginning

I liked all the characters, but found myself more interested in Richard, Jacob and William than Jake's wandering.

Really liked the world building, everything with the Viper was amazing. Lots of questions with answers that I'm sure are to come.

Honestly though Jake's sorry was a little boring here and there, brewing potion after potion and killing beast after beast was just repetitive. I liked the exploration of his character through his dreams and thoughts about such and such but not his actual 'scenes' if that makes sense.

looking forward to the next book.

Where is part 2?

Loved it, the universe building is great, the way the author describes everything is exciting and the narrator travis baldree never misses. The only gripe I have and it doesn't reflect the quality of the story, is just that it ends as a part 1, not a book 1. The arch didn't finish with the book and that was disappointing. Anyway, onto book 2.

Pretty good

Liking the story and pacing a lot, the MC was a bit much to get used to at first but that did not last long.

Only problem is the usual special MC stereotype, but without spoiling anything it isn’t wholly unique to the MC. Just some interactions are a bit childish and flippant, but that’s occasionally and not often.

Regardless still enjoyable, I’m glad the MC spends some time alone, considering virtually 90-95% of all games you progress faster alone

A great read.

This does echo He Who Fights With Monsters, especially to begin with, but it's a good read in its own right.
I'm off to get the next one immediately.

The best litRPG in my opinion

I’ve read everything from “he who fights monsters” to “catharsis”, “defiance of the fall” plus many many more. But, for me Zogarth reigns supreme over them all.

World.

I think Zogarth has better world building than most. It’s very easy for me to have a clear visage of the world he portrays. And it’s also a world I find really interesting and visually appealing. The Primal hunter while massive in scope, only more and more apparent as you read on, it never feels like you get lost. I feel Zogarth doesn’t overwhelm the reader in details, rather gives you exactly enough to paint a detailed mental picture while still having the story move forward.

Fight scenes.

All the fight scenes are written very well, are easy to understand and if you’ve read the last few chapters of book 5, badass. The fighting is technical. It can get quite complex in the context of the lore. As you read, you’ll understand exactly how he’s fighting, the weapon he’s using and why he’s using it, why he wins and loses in relation to the weapons and techniques he uses. It’s not obscure. I don’t think it ever feels convenient either. For example, even in later books jake will be in a fight and then makes use of a tool or item he received books earlier which I had forgotten about. Which brings me to the next thing…

Loot/gear.

Just like I love loot in games and RPGs, with all the stats and bonuses and rarities. It’s the same for The Primal Hunter. The loot and gear jake finds is really important. He’ll often stick with an item of gear for a while so you as the reader have a very clear image of what Jake is using. The weapons almost feel like characters themselves since a lot of them stay with Jake for a long time. And just like in RPGs, you’ll find a ton of loot, and even though it’s cool, it doesn’t necessarily mean you can use it so you’ll stick with your shitty boots for until you find better. Plus like all true RPG players, Jake from the very beginning, starts with basic bow. He is an archer/rogue type. Which is obviously the coolest.

The MC, Jake.

Something I don’t like about Shirtaloons “He Who Fights Monsters” is that shirtaloon would write in some modern political commentary with his MC. His MC I often found annoying and overly opinionated, almost like a lecture. I read fantasy because I want to be taken away from the real world. This is often take me out of it. So rejoice! Zogarth keeps fantasy, fantasy. Jake stays in the moment. But also, if you read something like “Defiance of the fall”, that book is written in a way that left me wanting to know more of what the MC was thinking, his inner monologue, thoughts and feelings. Instead your just always told what the MC is doing. I find Zogarth has a perfect balance of writing what Jake is thinking and feeling, and providing context of what is happening. Jake as a character himself, although not all that deep, is still interesting. I think it’s because, he’s always moving so you don’t necessarily need to have him super layered. He’s written in a very “in the moment” kind of way. Kinda like an RPG game. A lot of ppl including myself don’t need to have extremely complex deep characters when the loot and progression game is strong. If anyone captures the essence of what an RPG is, in written form, it’s Zogarth.

Anyway this review is long enough, it’s an easy recommendation from me to anyone who’s into litRPGS or want to try your first. For me I started reading this while waiting for Brandon Sandersons new Stormlight archive book to be released. And thanks to Zogarth, Found a new genre to enjoy. I would love to shake his hand in person. Maybe one day👍

Good story, very similar to other authors' work

This story is very similar to 'He who fights with monsters'. It could even be in the same universe; I thought it was that close. But I enjoyed that series, and I enjoyed this book.
The entire book is set within the tutorial straight after the universe is merged with the multiverse - it's the 93rd universe to be merged, so everyone is thrown into a life-and-death tutorial.
It's got levelling, an MC with fortunate encounters, Gods that meddle, terrible people doing terrible things, and a 'System' that no one understands.
If you're looking for a good listen and can get past the fact that it echos 'He who fights with Monsters' so closely, you might enjoy it. I did.
I've just started the second book, which picks up right where this one left off.

good book, read well

a classic in the LITRPG category. well worth the listen. main character seems a little too OP but don't we kind of like that? give it a go. reader from AU, not affiliated or paid to review.

the Narrator is awesome, and very smooth to listen to. speed slowed to 90% and it is perfect. seems a little too fast otherwise
