Generations of dogs have been labeled training lemons for requiring actual motivation when all along they were perfectly normal. Numerous other completely and utterly normal dogs have been branded as canine misfits simply because they grew up to act like dogs. Barking, chewing, sniffing, licking, jumping up, and occasionally (just like people) having arguments are as normal and natural for dogs as wagging tails and burying bones.

Story
In Your Dog Is Your Mirror, dog trainer Kevin Behan proposes a radical new model for understanding canine behavior: a dog’s behavior and emotion, indeed its very cognition, are driven by our emotion. The dog doesn’t respond to its owner based on what the owner thinks, says, or does; it responds to what the owner feels. And in this way, dogs can actually put people back in touch with their own emotions.

Story
Living with a reactive dog can accidently create a reactive person and a cycle of negative experiences begin. There is an answer though! With understanding comes positive change. It might not have always been this way; perhaps walking once triggered positive emotion. Maybe we were happy until something specific happened; for example, we met someone with an unfriendly dog that attacked ours or made them really scared. We, too, could have felt scared, then that fear grew over the next few walks, until we felt it the moment we saw another dog in the distance.

Story
For all the love and attention we give dogs, much of what they do remains mysterious. Just think about different behaviors you see at a dog park. We have a good understanding of what it means when dogs wag their tails, but what about when they sniff and roll on a stinky spot? What goes on in dogs' heads and hearts-and how much can we know and understand? Canine Confidential has the answers. Written by Marc Bekoff, it not only brilliantly opens up the world of dog behavior, but also helps us understand how we can make our dogs' lives the best they can possibly be.
Publisher's Summary
The Other End of the Leash shares a revolutionary new perspective on our relationship with dogs, focusing on our behavior in comparison with that of dogs. An applied animal behaviorist and dog trainer with more than 20 years of experience, Dr. Patricia McConnell looks at humans as just another interesting species, and muses about why we behave the way we do around our dogs, how dogs might interpret our behavior, and how to interact with our dogs in ways that bring out the best in our four-legged friends.
After all, although humans and dogs share a remarkable relationship that is unique in the animal world, we are still two entirely different species, each shaped by our individual evolutionary heritage. Quite simply, humans are primates and dogs are canids (like wolves, coyotes, and foxes). Since we each speak a different native tongue, a lot gets lost in the translation.
The Other End of the Leash demonstrates how even the slightest changes in your voice and the way you stand can help your dog understand what you want. Once you start to think about your own behavior from the perspective of your dog, you'll understand why much of what appears to be doggy disobedience is simply a case of miscommunication. Inside you will learn:
- How to use your voice so that your dog is more likely to do what you ask
- Why "getting dominance" over your dog is a bad idea
- Why "rough and tumble primate play" can lead to trouble - and how to play with your dog in ways that are fun and keep him out of trouble
- How dogs and humans share personality types - and why most dogs want to live with benevolent leaders rather than "alpha-wannabes!"
In her own insightful, compelling style, Patricia McConnell combines wonderful true stories about people and dogs with a new, accessible scientific perspective on how they should behave around each other. This is a book that strives to help you make the most of life with your dog, and to prevent problems that might arise in that most rewarding of relationships.

Amazing book for owners and trainers
First of all, I take my hat off to the narrator, I don't think it could have been better, I really enjoyed how she uses her voice to convey all the different parts and situations.
This book is one I will recommend to every dog owner and any starting trainers like me. Too much in dogs is considered known intuitivelly, but its just us trying to explain dogs through a human filter. We centre our attention on canine behavior and little on primate. The author gives a great, enjoyable and easy to listen explanation on how these two behavior patterns interact and how to improve our relationship with our dogs by looking at ouselves and how it influences our canine friends.

Conrad the Maremma
I have read Patricia's book in conjunction with doing basic dog training and this has facilitated Conrad's learning.
I was blown away with the practical advice and tips Patricia McConnell gave in this book. Her knowledge and innate judgment has enhanced both our lives. Instead of becoming frustrated I know now how to counter with good commands that are willingly complied with.
Bad habits like barking and 'play fight' have been sorted and best of all recall is improving week by week. Conrad is very stubborn but he is now changing into a joyful, dutiful hound.
A must read if you want to get into the psyche of your 'best friend'.
