a technical manual for trainers
ok, it's dry. Really dry. the info on operant conditioning, behavior modification, reinforcement, and punishment is valuable, although I have some strong beliefs about punishment that made it hard to not argue with.
For positive reinforcement trainers, it's valuable to know about punishers, even if you find it hard to listen to. I did, since I find the use positive punishment largely unethical. So-called balanced trainers may find this book more useful, as the section on punishers is very informative and I do like that the book strives to be neutral on the topic.

Wonderfully unbiased, until it isn’t.
This book does a great job of touching the surface definitions for anyone, trainers and owners alike. It is fairly well rounded until you get to the small sections on punishers, and then the authors bias comes out. They have a blatant distain for using punishers and refer to it as abuse on several occasions. I think that inserting this personal biased opinion seriously detracts from what could’ve been a very very good book. Overall I still like the book for what it is and is a good reference book. It does get a little hard to follow occasionally as an audio book because some charts just don’t translate well with no visual to accompany the description. I would highly recommend the hard copy book as to have as a handy a reference, but recommend the audio book less so.

Should be Titled "Technical Terms of Dog Training"
This book starts out with a long history of dog training and some implied "what not to do". The tone sounds as if it is written for people who already know what not to do. I assume the author was trying to give a history of how we got where we are, or trying to give credit. Next, it just starts listing technical terms of Dog Training. I have been listening for hours and I am about to give up, I have not yet heard "How dogs learn", I have only heard about training terms. This book should be retitled to "How dog trainers try to teach dogs". I am sorry to have to judge the book harshly because I am sure to a Ph.D. these are the technical terms that dog trainers should know. But if the publisher wants this book to get better reviews, then they need to change the title! Save a lot of time and just go to Wiki and lookup Operant Conditioning. If anyone knows what the best chapter(s) are for getting to the part of the book that talks about how dogs actually learn, then let us know.
