Story
Living with a reactive dog can accidently create a reactive person and a cycle of negative experiences begin. There is an answer though! With understanding comes positive change. It might not have always been this way; perhaps walking once triggered positive emotion. Maybe we were happy until something specific happened; for example, we met someone with an unfriendly dog that attacked ours or made them really scared. We, too, could have felt scared, then that fear grew over the next few walks, until we felt it the moment we saw another dog in the distance.

For all the love and attention we give dogs, much of what they do remains mysterious. Just think about different behaviors you see at a dog park. What goes on in dogs' heads and hearts-and how much can we know and understand? Canine Confidential has the answers. Written by Marc Bekoff, it not only brilliantly opens up the world of dog behavior, but also helps us understand how we can make our dogs' lives the best they can possibly be.

Informative
- By Anonymous User on 16-11-2020
Publisher's Summary
Almost every dog owner has a pet who suffers from fear, anxiety, and stress (FAS). They are the underlying cause of many concerning behaviors such as excessive barking, aggression, destructive behaviors, and house-soiling. They are also the source for deterioration of the human-animal bond, and can make a trip to the veterinarian, pet groomer, or boarding facility miserable for pet and owner alike. Left untreated, these negative experiences can lead to devastating consequences and permanent damage. Unfortunately, many well-meaning owners misinterpret or overlook the often subtle signs of emotional injury and turmoil, or think that the pet will simply "outgrow" it. This leads to unnecessary trauma and suffering.
Common FAS triggers include:
- Trips to the veterinarian (even for routine services such as vaccinations and nail trims)
- Bath time, brushing, or cleaning ears
- Loud noises; thunderstorms; fireworks; the vacuum cleaner; construction; gunshots; or even buzzers on appliances
- Less-familiar people or animals encountered on walks or near the home
- Being left alone during work hours or even for short errands
- Travel, including car rides
Finally, there's help. From Fearful to Fear Free is based on the groundbreaking Fear Free program embraced by tens of thousands of veterinary healthcare professionals and hundreds of thousands of pet owners. This is the first and most authoritative book on the subject of reducing FAS and increasing "happy and calm" in dogs. Since pets communicate nonverbally, this book will help you recognize if your pet is suffering from FAS. By knowing your dog's body language, vocalizations, and changes in normal habits, you can make an accurate diagnosis and take action to prevent triggers or treat the fallout if they do happen.
You'll learn:
- The most effective prescription sedatives for keeping dogs calm and happy during thunderstorms, fireworks, and other stressful events.
- The positive steps you can take to keep your pet occupied, calm, and content while you're away at work or play.
- Simple, practical tactics for helping your dog learn to love going to the veterinarian's office-literally pulling you into the practice instead of avoiding it!
- How to easily groom your dog and give him medication.
- Tips to tame the chaos when guests arrive in your home or when your dog encounters other dogs and people on walks.
- Ways to tackle some of the common behavior issues that often have a root cause of FAS, while also improving your communication and bond with your pet.
The three veterinary co-authors and one highly respected pet trainer have a combined 88 years of experience in the trenches of veterinary medicine, with specialties in behavior and training. By using their cutting-edge techniques, you'll have pets that are happier, healthier and live a longer, fuller life.

Great book for learning how to prevent fear in young puppies, especially newly born.
Explains how to socialise dogs, from before they born, that is, whilst still in-utero, right through until the dog becomes fully grown. This excellent book offers lots of information on prevention of anti-social behaviours in dogs, especially focusing on how to prevent fear. I highly recommend this book. This book is very informative for anyone looking to training their own service dog as it will guide future trainers and /or owners in choosing the right service dog puppy, or to ask the breeder to treat the pregnant dog and puppies in the correct way for optimal socialisation of the puppies.

Useful information and tips
I enjoyed this book thoroughly, but the authors are clearly academics who sit in a white tower. Be prepared to hear "board certified behavioral whatever", over and over again. The only thing a certificate proves is the person is really good at rote learning and regurgitating the information on command. I'm far more interested in the experience and philosophy of the trainer, not the paper they display on their wall. Still, lots of useful tips and information on dog body language. The useful part could be reduced to a 2 hour book. Be prepared to take many strolls down memory lane, which is a dead end road with literally nothing useful along the way.

considering the book is over 10 hrs long, this may seem like a nit-pick but I was more than disappointed when listening and then the book just goes silent for over a minute In the middle of chapter 15, chapter 13 in the book. idk if it was a recording issue or if it was a issue that occurred during download.. beyond that I greatly enjoyed the book and the information it gave. very informative and highly recommend

Wonderfully Insightful
I have been working with fearful dogs for years due to the rescues I work with. I currently have a fearful rescue dog that I adopted out a few months ago. I have worked with him previously from helping at the same rescue I adopted him out from. ive known him since he was 6 months old and have worked with him since he was roughly 1.5 years old. I was his first time and first human bond he has ever had. This book has helped me immensely in helping him. he was so terrified of the world and of people that it was sad to try things out with him due to the immense fear he had of everything outside of the kennels since that's all he knew. This book was written beautifully and narrated wonderfully. I highly recommend if you're a trainer and or have/work with fearful dogs.

Good but not practical for me.
This book has really good information in it but it really focuses on rewarding with treats and toys. My dog doesn't really care about treats, food, toys, or verbal praise. She's just scared. The only information I think I can really use is to take her to a Veterinary Behaviorist, which I didn't know was a thing before listening to this book.

Most information is common sense
Truly disappointed. Most of this book is common sense. Much emphasis on pure breeds and just when you think their might be some good information coming they tell you to consult an animal behaviorist or your vet. I bought this book because I have 4 dogs from the shelter, one of them has a fear of leashes. Slowly she has been getting over it. Nothing in this book has changed what I have already been doing. Another thing that was concerning was how much they tooted animal breeding. Never mentioning the health issues that arise even from the best breeders nor do they mention how tail docking or ear cropping disables a dog's ability to communicate with humans as well as other dogs. By the way all of my dogs were pretty well trained with the basics before I adopted them and are truly the most grateful babies I have ever had. Before knowing the huge problem we have due to the overpopulation amongst other things I bought a very expensive pure bred. I loved my Afghan very much, but if I had to adopt another dog, hands down I would again visit the local shelter.

Disappointing
Some good information, but basically an infomercial for a "Board Certified Veterinarian Behavioralists". A fair bit of mis information/mis-characterization throughout. I am very down on big Pharma pushing medication where several other approaches are better. Maybe not as profitable for the big Pharma's and the trickle down to the doctors and veterinarians, but better for us and certainly for our pets. Several other good books on the subject - chose them.
