Narrating from her deathbed, Mathilda tells the story of her unnamed father’s confession of incestuous love for her, followed by his suicide by drowning; her relationship with a gifted young poet called Woodville fails to reverse Mathilda’s emotional withdrawal or prevent her lonely death.

Niemand scheint den Mann zu kennen, der zwar Trauerkleidung trägt, aber weder an der Beerdigung noch an der Trauerfeier teilgenommen hat. Gemeinsam nehmen Mimi Rutherfurt und Pater Brown die Ermittlungen auf.

Die Spur im Fall des Mannes, den Pater Brown und Mimi Rutherfurt in Gutt's Hill erschossen aufgefunden haben, führt nach Newton.
