we embark on a fascinating journey into a celebration of a festival deeply rooted in Eastern culture: Gurupurnima, while Western culture embraces the concept of gratitude as Thanksgiving day. However this unique celebration of Gurupurnima remains relatively unknown to the west although the underlying reason being the same, expression of attitude for gratitude, togetherness, appreciation, and reflection.
Join me please as we uncover the essence of Gurupurnima and its profound connection to the yogic path. Get ready to expand your horizons and embrace a whole new perspective on gratitude, right here on Spotify's "Making of a Yogi" podcast.
Now I begin paying homage to all my Gurus and teachers by reciting this powerful shloka:
Gururbrahma gururvishnuh
gururdevo maheshwarah |
Guru saakshat parabrahma
tasmai shri gurave namah ||
This was the Guru Mantra or Guru Maha Mantra. This sloka has great in depth philosophical meaning which I would like to explain, it means:
I salute the Guru and the Guru that we know is Brahma (the creator of Self-Knowledge, making us realize the Godliness in us), Vishnu (the sustainer or the Preserver; Preserving such Self- Knowledge) and Shiva or Maheshwara, the Destroyer of Ignorance.
Deva means God.
Saakshaat: Self/Himself
ParaBrahma means The Supreme Power, Lord; Consciousness, Self.
Tasmai: To him/To such.
Sri: Holy, splendorous.
Namaha: Salutations.
I bow before the Guru, who is the personification of the Trinity and if we stay in touch with the guru then we will be able to see God or the Parabhrahma through the Guru. the Guru creates, sustains knowledge and destroys ignorance.
The true meaning of Guru is "one who is dispeller of darkness of ignorance". "Gu" means "darkness of ignorance" and "Ru" means " Remover". By doing so he liberates the disciple from the ocean of samsara meaning endless cycle of birth, death and rebirth, helps us detach from the trap of Maya or illusion, thereby attaining Moksha or salvation or liberation from sufferings. For this, we bow down with utter humility and total gratitude to the Guru.
This Guru mantra seeks the help from Guru in form of Brahma, Vishnu and Shiva. When the Trinity combine their powers, you get a solid support to overcome problems in life. By reciting this mantra with a sincere heart, one experiences the power that enlightens, is all around him/her at all times.
