A skeleton is found in a shallow grave in the churchyard. But this was not an official burial. The victim was murdered decades ago. At the same time, Detective Nikki Galena and her team are investigating the brutal slaying of local businesswoman Madeline Prospero. She was a member of an exclusive and secretive drinking club called The Briar Patch. But they've got no suspects and no one is telling them the truth. Meanwhile, the buried skeleton leads them on a trail to the village of Quintin Eaudyke. This is a troubled place. In the late 70s and 80s a reign of terror was unleashed.

Don't like narration
I keep listening to this series because I like the books, but I really don't like the narration and am finding it more irritating with each book. the different voices being thrown are distracting because of bad accents and one's that don't suit the characters given their descriptions

Brilliant..
Loved the book. The storyline was fabulous and kept me enthralled to the very end. Narrator’s were so believable and I could picture them ‘in life’... The voice of the DI that took over when her ‘boss’ was kidnapped became a tad shrill. However a great story. I will be on the lookout for more from this author.

Strange obsession
Another complex and exciting mystery. This story also finally completes a problem that has been plaguing Nikki and Joseph since before they began to work together. We also see the last of another, much loved/respected local villain. Time does move on and this series does that very well. We are kept in touch with familiar characters and are introduced to new ones. This story is really two and a half stories in one. One has two threads to it. Joy really knows how to keep all the balls bouncing until the very end. Having listened to this series from the beginning I have come to know these characters through their voices. Thanks.

Too close to home
The raw, no non-sense, direct and very northern manner of the DI along with the characters in the team who are virtually a family make these books a joy to read/listen to and follow how each story develops. Perhaps it's my own northern English roots but I really appreciate everything about these books. As such, its easy to get right into the books and I guess it had to happen but in this book the danger came too close to home but I suppose this made the ending more of a high than usual.

I love this English police procedural series!
Stalker on the Fens is Book 5 in the DI Nikki Galena series. Like each of the prior four it is a wonderful suspense thriller this novel is special. The novels are set in the Fens which is an area on England's central east coast approximately 50 miles northeast of London. Detective inspector Nikki Galena is a marvelous protagonist. Narrator Henrietta Meire reads in the clipped English accent most common in the area. It can be a little difficult for Americans at first, but understanding comes quickly. Author Joy Ellis is a master of the police procedural genre. I highly recommend this series and this novel.
The sixth audio novel in this seven novel series will be released in two weeks. The title is Captive on the Fens. It is currently available for pre-order at Audible, but is less expensively ordered through Amazon's Whispersync for Voice.

Stalker on the Fens#4, Hunted#3, Shadow#2,Crime#1
This four book series -- Crime on the Fens, Shadow over the Fens, Hunted on the Fens and Stalke on the Fens -- is GREAT! And they nestle together beautifully, capturing the depth and growth of the characters as they go. Do start with the first (Crime on the Fens) and you will be hooked to learn more about what happens to DI Nikki Galena and her murder unit of detectives. The story lines are very, very good and the narration fits so perfectly with the locale of the story. Loved every minute of this entire series.

The narrator can be super annoying!
Chose this book at random to leave a review, but this could apply to any of the series. I really like all of the books in this series (currently on number 7), and Joy Ellis in general - but often in spite of the narrator, I'm afraid. In fact, so often in spite of the narrator that I had to stop and start a number of times throughout the books. The voices for the main characters are okay, but she chooses a very strange, monotone start-stop cadence for many a sentence, and seems to disregard punctuation, and in particular the voices of some of the supporting characters are just plain annoying (Rory!). Similarly, some of the female side characters speak in very girlish sopranos that I found very distracting. I"m not very familiar with Lincolnshire accents, so I can't comment on the quality of those, though. This narrator issue would have stood out to me anyway, but it is especially true in comparison with the Jackman and Evans series, where Rory is one of my favourites because he actually sounds credible.

Gripping mystery with great characters
DI Nikki Galena's friend, Helen Brooks, thinks she's being followed. Helen was badly hurt in a building collapse a year ago, including some brain damage, and she's got some odd memories that don't seem supported by evidence. For instance, she thinks there was a man also in that collapsed basement with her, on the other side of a wall, who talked to her for a while before Nikki and Sergeant Joseph Easter, by chance the two officers closest to the scene, arrived. Yet no one else was in the building, nor was any evidence found that there had been. So is she really being followed? Or is she still feeling the effects of the trauma and brain damage? Helen's boyfriend, Andrew Gregory, is certain it's the latter. Nikki isn't sure he's right--but she's definitely not sure he's wrong. And every piece of evidence that seems to support Helen's story is quickly exploded--for instance, a scruffy young man who is seen hanging out near her flat, when picked up, turns out to be the unapproved boyfriend of a young woman in a neighboring house. Dad doesn't approve, so they have to sneak around. Meanwhile, Nikki and Joseph are sure their old nemesis Cox is back in the area, but he's as elusive as ever. And there's a tension in the rougher part of town, that might be related to the Leonard family, whose patriarch, and unlikely friend of Nikki's, is dying. As much as she wants to help Helen, she's both very busy, and not at all sure how to help, or what kind of help Helen really needs. Of course, everything changes when Helen is found dead. This is a gripping, absorbing story, and Nikki, Joseph, their colleagues and friends, are all interesting people worth getting to know better. This is a series where the characters keep growing, becoming richer and more interesting as their experiences change them. Recommended. I bought this audiobook.

Brava to the author and narrator
I love this series. I'm so glad this fifth book has finally been released in audio format.
This one kept me up most of the night. I couldn't put it down. I didn't figure out who-done-it until after it was obvious but I usually don't try. More fun to just let it happen. Nikki and Joseph are great characters as are crew on their team. The murder(s) are vividly described and I think it was important because it let us feel what Nikki was hit with. Great story.
The narration is very well done. I look forward to the next book which I have pre-ordered.

Unresolved Issues
Another interesting crime story and another study in the human condition. The impact a person has on another sometime is subtle but forceful. Many characters brush and response with another person's action or inaction is nicely developed in this story; The pressure a person puts on oneself because of a perceived offense or intent is remarkably described. The villan's reason for the crime is a melding of this pressure and ego. The narrator is so good that the switch between characters is seemless.

Appalling narration. Series needs redoing from scratch.
This series of books is excellent but Henrietta Meire’s narration is truly abysmal. I have now listened to the first four books of the series and wonder how she was ever selected. She mispronounces common words, sometimes misses words out altogether and her characterisations are mostly laughable. Read the books but do not bother with the audio versions.

Couldn't stop listening!
Any additional comments?
Even though the narration is poor the story line is excellent. The story deals with current issues in the context of a police drams. I have listened to the previous books and was hoping when this was released it would have a change of narrator. Even so a good listen I enjoyed the twists and turns of the plot unexpected ending kept me guessing to the last.

ANOTHER BRILLIANT READ IN THE FENS' SERIES
I cannot praise Joy Ellis's works highly enough. I have listened to the first six with excellent narration by Henrietta Meire. I know Henrietta can falter a little at times but who wouldn't with so many roles to cover. Most importantly I can recognise the main characters immediately. And Joy Ellis brings every "person" straight at you! There is everything in these novels - intrigue, crime, social behaviours, romantic (non-mushy) interludes and gripping thriller moments. I would advise following the series sequentially to really immerse yourself in their worlds that can be black and very bleak at times but always riveting. And the ever-present "will they won't they?" relationship between Nikki and Joe. I'm sure even Joy herself doesn't know the answer!

Joy Ellis magic!
I have thoroughly enjoyed each of the books in this series but sadly found the narrator to be hard work. Although tolerable I doubt that every policewoman speaks in such a high pitched squeaky way, which detracted from the overall story to a degree. Amazingly written these books deserved better.

Gripping story, irritating narration
As with others in this series, the story is brilliantly written, but the narrator's strange, shrill female voices, appalling regional voices and constant mispronounced words is distracting and spoils the experience.

Narration
Great story spoiled by ludicrous narration. Please consider changing narrator. Love the writers work. Thank you Joy Ellis

Terrible, terrible narrator,
The narrator reads too quickly, her voice is jarring, I tried to get used to it, but no good.
