Publisher's Summary

DI Nikki Galena gets a series of anonymous calls. She is told the place, time, and who will die. But the messages are in a secret language used only by villains. Nikki and her team must decode the riddles and work out where the threats are coming from.

Meanwhile, the fens have been hit by a series of "designer burglaries". It appears that a new gang of thieves are stealing to order. And things get very close to home when a friend of Nikki's mother dies suddenly and, perhaps, suspiciously.

Do any of these events relate, and can Nikki stop the thieves on the fens before anyone else dies?

Full of twists and turns, this is a crime thriller that will keep you in suspense until its heart-stopping conclusion.

Average

The sad thing about this story is the narrators tedious voice. Henrietta Meier is I’m sure a lovely person but her voice should be kept away from reading books. It’s monotonous and I found it impossible to know who was talking. Bad narrators ruin books on audible. So annoying. I won’t ever listen to Henrietta again.

Not My Favourite

I have read all seven books in this series before this one, and enjoyed them all. This one however, just didn't pique my interest. It actually didn't hold my interest very well either, and I dragged through this one for days until finally finishing it. I think perhaps it is the overcomplicated storyline, or the way the characters jump around...there just seemed a lack of balance. The story could have been good if it had had a further three books dedicated to it, but squishing the whole plot into 7.5 hours was just too much.

Not my favourite, but I still hold hope for the next two.

The past comes forward

This was such a sad story line. There was, of course, bad behaviour from ‘crims’ and some gruesome deaths as always. The premise of this story was the fallout from things in the characters past coming to haunt those in the present. A great story with many people contributing to solving the mysteries.
One death, in particular, gives Nikki and Joseph cause to pause and question what they have besides work. There is a very satisfying ending, if not quite just.

Pretty good next chapter

Another good story, I enjoyed the complexities of multiple simultaneous events converging. Revenge, conspiracy and organised crime weaved an interesting tapestry for this tale. Good job.

End of the DI Nikki Galena series, but don't fear!

I have enjoyed each of the audio books in this modern detective series and Book 8, Thieves on the Fens, is no exception. Henrietta Meire's narration has been outstanding.

But there are more Joy Ellis modern detective novels on the way. On May 29, 2018 Audible will release Their Lost Daughters in the DI Rowan Jackman and DS Marie Evans series. The Jackman and Evans series is set in the Lincolnshire Fens like the Nikki Galena series and it will be narrated by Richard Armitage. The actual first novel in the series is The Murder's Son. In any case, 4 highly rated series novels have been released in Kindle format.

Already eager for next book in series!

This is such an enjoyable series! I really like the characters & get invested in their lives. I’m looking forward to the next book!

The narrator is excellent & makes it easy to distinguish between the characters.

I highly recommend this series! Thank you, Joy, for this series! Btw, I think you’ve got a really nice first name! ;) 😁

This series is SO good

Joy Ellis has quickly become one of my favorite authors. Her Fens books are automatic pre-orders for me. I am now looking to start reading her other books.

This latest Nikki Galena book is, again, fantastic. The characters and the story make me want to never put it down. I remember seeing 3am while listening to this book. There are two forces tugging at Nikki and her team. One, an anonymous caller using code to get revenge and lead her to a murder (it may be hers!) and the other a threat to her mother and her former RAF/MOD friends. Good stuff!

And there's Joseph... always a wonderful person to have around.

If I'm allowed one tiny complaint, there was an inconsistency regarding the police officer investigating Eve's house. He was referred to as DC and then as DS. A minor point.

The narration was quite good. I certainly hope we haven't seen the last of Nikki, Joseph, and the rest of the team.

Life of What-Ifs verses that of Oh-Well

Another brilliant crime story. Joy Ellis story shows many levels of thievery both literal and personal. The real crime by the thief produces long-term emotional scars than objects taken. The "Thieves on the Fen" depicts stories of potential opportunities lost, the What-Ifs, by decisions made an individual and how they reconcile it. The police story is straight forward. The angst of the people involved, both police and villain, is beautifully described. Great story and narration.

least favourite overall

of all the Fens books by Joy Ellis, this was my least favourite.
the storyline was confusing in parts, uninteresting and seemed to jump from place to place.
However, it did still harbour secrets and had a mystery to the crimes. If you have listened to / read the rest of the Fens books, I would still recommend even if its purely to follow each character on their journey and find out more about them.

Why is Joseph such a wimp?

I really like the Joy Ellis Fens series of books but the one irritation through every book is that Niki Galena is the one punching and fighting the baddies whilst Joseph - supposedly ex-SAS is always behind her or doing something naff! not sure how Ellis made his character so.wimpy. He's always suffering angst or cooking! Not at all manly, attractive or SAS like!

Ruined by awful narration

Unfortunately, I found the irritating narration so distracting that I struggled to follow the storyline. Some of the voices and accents the narrator used for characters were so bad they made me laugh out loud, not quite the right response to a murder mystery.
