Publisher's Summary

From two-million-selling author Joy Ellis comes one of the most eagerly awaited mysteries this year.

One moonlit night, the bodies of two young people are discovered lying entwined on a blanket in the woods. The young man is clutching a red rose. It appears to be a lovers' suicide pact....

Until Detective Nikki Galena and DS Joseph Easter look more closely. Romeo and Juliet, as they decide to call them, were murdered somewhere else and brought to the woods. But why?

Then another young couple are found dead, again beautifully posed as lovers. And Nikki knows they have a twisted serial killer on their hands. Who are the next victims?

Everyone has secrets. But some people will kill to keep them.

Narration

I have listen all of Joy Ellis's books it just occurred to me that she has the worst narrators I have ever heard. She seemed particularly bad in this book . Every single person sounded the same and the guy in her other books is as bad. She lost me untill she gets done new ones and reading reviews Im not the only one who thinks this.

Brilliant...as usual!

I thoroughly enjoyed this one, can't get enough of the Nikki and Joseph series...I'm really hoping this isn't the last one! My problem now is to have to wait for the No. 13 to be written. I love the progression of the main characters, and am feeling optimistic that there WILL be at least one more. Joy Ellis's series of Marie and Jackman came to a good conclusion so yes, fingers crossed this one still has a ways to go 😃 thank you Joy Ellis for such interesting and riveting storylines 🥰

Joy Ellis

I love all the stories On The Fens. Nikki Galina a d Joseph Easter are such a great duo. These stories are masterful. You are roped in wondering who's the good or bad person. Thoroughly enjoyable.

Terrible narration spoiled the enjoyment of this book!

The narration of this book was absolutely terrible and spoiled my enjoyment of the story. I only persevered as I wanted to read this latest Joy Ellis novel and I didn’t have time to read it in print. Many times I thought I’d just have to stop listening as it was so bad !! Why why why are such poor narrators chosen ?? The narrator’s voice did not in any way suit the book or it’s characters. Such a waste of an interesting plot. Very very disappointed and I would not recommend this audio book because of the narration. (Given 1 star as I wasn’t allowed to give none!)

Screechy & Melodramatic Narration

I’m a fan of Joy Ellis’s Jackman / Evans stories & in particular the amazing voice acting associated with the series by Richard Armitage. I knew the narrator was never going to reach those heights but was so disappointed in the voice “performances” of this narrator. Set in the fens I expected at least that the accents would be correct. Only with the main character of Nicki Galena was there any attempt to do a regional accent & that came & went. I found the narration screechy & melodramatic. The story was good but overall disappointing.

Becoming too predictable and narration not good

I really enjoyed joy ellis’s books, especially di Jackson but I find it a struggle to get through the Nikki gallena ones - probably mostly caused by the quite terrible narration. The over posh and dramatic voices detract so much from the story and found this one especially hard. Not the best I have to say.

Fantastic and intriguing

This is by far one of the best stories I have listened too. Fantastically narrated and of course written. I can’t wait to read the next book

I’m gutted I wasted a credit on this, I couldn’t get through the book no matter how brilliant the blurb was. The narrator is absolutely shocking

Not up to her usual standard

I've listened to all 12 novels in the Nikki Galena series by Joy Ellis and have rated almost all 5 stars. SECRETS ON THE FENS is pretty good but not up to the standards set in the earlier books. The story is difficult to keep up with the plot due to the large number of characters. It is needlessly complex.

Good story, distracting narrator

Joy Ellis writes a good story, as always. The narrator for this series detracts from the books, sadly. She has a lisp I find distracting as well as a frequent, overly angsty tone. Also, she mis-pronounced “Coup de grace.” Really jolted my ear & surprised me as most educated Brits I’ve found to be comfortable with French pronunciations.

It’s time to end

It was painful and dull. Too many attempt at clever quips (that were utterly unnecessary to the story and also made the whole thing sound more like a collection of puns than a story of how actual live humans would speak to each other). And the story of a bunch of old ladies and paintings….it’s been dragged out for how many books now? Good lord it had nothing to do with the story and almost made me quit the book.

Great to get back to familiar characters and a good story. Some of the narrator’s pronunciation irritates but overall well done.

Always enjoyable!

Love when Nikki and Jackman are mentioned in each other’s series! Waiting for the next Jackman and Evans novel … ! This was a good story, not as fast paced and intense as some of the earlier ones in the Nikki Galena series, but I still enjoyed it.

Loved this story as much as the others in the series!

I enjoyed this story— just like all the others in the Nikki Galena series! I read one review that said it wasn’t up to par, but I’d have to disagree. If you like this series, you will like this one, too!

💕💕💕

I absolutely love this series by Joy Ellis.
The twists and turns are intricately woven into the story that keep you guessing almost to the end of the story. The narrator adds personality to the characters- I like it when the narrator remains the same throughout the series.
I have a vision in my head of how the characters look based on the combination of the author’s words and the narrator’s presentation 🙌🏼
I hope there are more books added to this series!

Disappointing

My expectations are always very high when a new Nikki Galena book is released. This time, however, I was very disappointed in the story and the writing. All of the characters spoke in clichés, Joseph and Nikki, and Wendy and Eve were caricatures of these characters in earlier books. The plots of both storylines were convoluted and fantastical. Perhaps it's time to leave this part of the fens and check back in with Jackman and Evans.

Great read

I have enjoyed all of the “Fen” books and this one as well. There is enough complexity to be interesting and the characters are well developed. The narrator isn’t my favorite but after a while I get used to the clip speech and it suits Niki.

Sigh- I think Joy Ellis phoned this one in.

This book was almost all dialogue, as if it was written for the Audible version. Ellis moved the story forward with shallow, contrived and sometimes unnecessary dialogue. There was almost no descriptive language.

One of the strengths of writers like Joy Ellis and Ann Cleeves’ is their sense of place. For this novel Ellis seems to be counting completely on the fact that her listeners have read the other books in the series for that feeling

On top of that this particular reading felt rushed or forced.
I hope this does not signal a new trend for Audible - rushing to get new recordings out to customers with the loss of quality I have become accustomed to.

Poor narration spoiling story

The characterisation by the narrator is extremely poor. Most characters have only three emotions - shouting in anger, quaking in terror or deep in despair. Really beginning to irritate me now and only half way through the story.

Excellent

I enjoy this series and this book was not a disappointment. Listened to it in two days. I have seen negative comments regarding the narrator but, as I like a series to stick to the same narrator, it is good there has not been a change. Looking forward to the next book.

Nothing like poor narration to ruin a book this could save some even when the story line is a load of rubbish. Will be requesting a refund for this one

Great book!

Absolutely love this author and these characters. Another well written story. Maybe not as gripping as some of the others, but kept me interested until the end. Not full of irrelevant details that frustrate. Didn't like the narrator quite as much as the previous one. Not sure why, but struggled to picture the characters with this narrator but then maybe I just struggled with the characters all sounding a little different? Was a little disappointed at the ending; not very exciting bit it did wrap everything up and was quite satisfying. Overall a great book.

I love all Joy Ellis’s books and this was as good as previous ones. Tough one to predict, Top class narration too.
