Story
Shetland Detective Jimmy Perez knows it will be a difficult homecoming when he returns to Fair Isle. It’s a community where strangers, while welcomed, are still viewed with a degree of mistrust. With the autumn storms raging, the island feels cut off from the rest of the world. Tempers among the trapped islanders become frayed. Enough to drive someone to murder? When a body is discovered, the islanders react with fear. With no support from the mainland, Jimmy has to investigate the old-fashioned way.

Story
When Shetland detective Jimmy Perez finds a body in a hut used by fishermen, it seems to be a straightforward case of suicide. He recognises the victim - a stranger with amnesia who had disrupted a local party the night before his death. Yet this is no desperate act of anguish but the work of a cold and calculating killer. As Perez investigates, he finds himself mired in the hidden secrets of the small Biddista community. Then another body is found. Perez knows he must break the cycle before another death occurs. But this is a crazy time of year, when night blurs into day and nothing is quite as it seems....

Story
It is a cold January morning and Shetland lies buried beneath a deep layer of snow. Trudging home, Fran Hunter's eye is drawn to a vivid splash of colour on the white ground, ravens circling above. It is the strangled body of her teenage neighbour Catherine Ross. The locals on the quiet island stubbornly focus their gaze on one man – loner and simpleton Magnus Tait. But when police insist on opening out the investigation a veil of suspicion and fear is thrown over the entire community. For the first time in years, Catherine's neighbours nervously lock their doors, whilst a killer lives on in their midst.

In North Devon, where the rivers Taw and Torridge converge and run into the sea, Detective Matthew Venn stands outside the church as his father's funeral takes place. The day Matthew turned his back on the strict evangelical community in which he grew up, he lost his family, too. Now he's back, not just to mourn his father at a distance, but to take charge of his first major case in the Two Rivers region; a complex place not quite as idyllic as tourists suppose.

Splendid
Joy - the Kenny Blyth narrated version was released just as I was ready for it. plot not quite as good as the previous two in the series, but tidied up neatly and credibly. As always, informative about the history and way of life in the Shetlands.

Lots of repetitive themes
I love the Shetland stories and keep listening even though they have a number of small issues.
This one was much longer than needed. The running and very repetitive theme was Sandy hating his mother and Perez deliberating about marriage. If they were reduced from being mentioned 4 or 5 times to just once, it would have been much better.

slow but steady
Perez is drawn better here; more thoughtful than wishy washy. It was refreshing not to have a senior officer breathing down his neck. Intriguing story, well drawn put. But the love story is a bit wet. The narrator's voice is great for the men but all the women sound weak. Occasionally the voices fail to reflect the described sentiment (e.g when someone is supposed to sound sharp or angry, the narration remains level). But overall I enjoyed it. I hope the next in the series is set in winter as this is more evocative of the landscape and the isolation, but that's just a personal preference.

Brilliant
I pride myself on being able to spot the baddie early on in a book but I have to admit I didn’t have a clue who it was in this book. It was enthralling. It’s the third Shetland book I have read. I’ve just about got the actors who play the main parts in the tv adaptation out of my head. You have to forget them as the characters in the book are nothing like them. The narrator Kenny Blyth is superb. I have loved this book and can’t wait to get stuck into No 4.

Another gripping story in the ‘ Shetland ‘ series . Narrator has just the right voice ( voices ! )
Story itself really did keep me guessing and I loved the feeling it gave of actually being on the Islands.
