The Master story teller strikes again.

JD Kirk is always full of surprises and this book is no exception. As with the ”Hoon” series he takes a character that you love to hate and turns her into a character that you hate to love. All the usual humour and incisive character descriptions and curly plots.
Although I really missed Angus King’s narration, Catherine McCarron did a great job. Still that wonderful Scottish accent without which the story couldn’t come to life as it does.

Only slightly disappointed

Slightly disappointed at how graphic the description of the child abuse was by the perp and even though the narrator was very good, she wasn’t Angus King. And after hearing DI Jack Logan’s voice over 13-14 of JDKirks books, to hear him spoken by a woman was a big let down. Angus King is so brilliant at narrating the Scottish and Brits accents, he cannot be replaced.

Another detective with ‘issues’

Foul-mouthed, hard-drinking detective with troubled past trying to solve a case in which they’re personally involved whilst being hampered by incompetent bosses insisting rules be obeyed. Sound familiar? This time though it’s a female detective having to overcome incompetent male superiors. Overall not too bad but descriptions of main character’s home life pretty tedious.

Excellent listening

JD Kirk always writes a book to draw you in and entertain.
In my humble opinion, the first D I, Heather Filson book is an absolute treat. I cannot wait for the follow-up books.
Cathleen McCarron has done an excellent job of narrating. She gave the perfect voices to all the characters.
I highly recommend this book.

Wow

This was my first ever audible and the bar has been set so very high. Full marks to Cathleen the reader who brought every character to life. The book was so beautifully written, nothing short of amazing. A must listen!

I did not want to like this book

I’m a Jack Logan fan and have listened to or read every book in that series. I didn’t enjoy it when DI Heather Philson put in an appearance in that series and was pissed off when I saw the two latest novels were about her so I ignored them until now.

Anyway, I gave this book a go and absolutely enjoyed it as much as the DI Logan books. It’s the same writer, creating interesting characters and using the same humour, after all.

I’m now listening to the second Philson book and it’s just as entertaining. I can’t get enough and can’t wait until the next JD Kirk novel, whether it’s based on Philson, Logan or Hoon (who is possibly my favourite).

If you were like me and were hesitating, just give it a go. I’m really glad that I did.

Another J D Kirk masterpiece

Everything! The female narration was excellent. The twist at the end was cleverly done and the characters were so well represented.

Not quite as good as other 2 series

I liked many things about this book although I was not a Heather fan when she appeared in the Jack Logan series. The plot is complex and has many surprises up until the end. The narrator did a good job with the accents and the smarmy characters like DCI Grant but she was wrong for Heather. She sounds too young and innocent. Give us Angus King! I felt that Heather made a lot of poor decisions for a former DCI that endangered the case.

How does he do it?

JD Kirk took one of the most hated characters from the DCI Logan series and turned her into my new favorite DI. Cathleen McCarron delivers a superb performance. Looking forward to the next installment!

Love the JD Kirk Universe

Heather is a complicated character that makes her a realistic heroine of this story. It keeps you guessing, had the humor you’d expect, and included characters you can love. I am hoping for more of Heather and Ace.

Oh, no you didn’t …

Heather Filson was such a disagreeable character in the Logan books—a sad stereotype past her sell-by date. (I think there is at least one of her on every force, and they’re all tedious in exactly the same way.) I found her so distasteful that, despite my high regard for JD Kirk and his work, I put off even looking at this book for a good while. How am I supposed to like her or care about her for an entire novel? She’s no Bob Hoon, after all. But … whatever curiosity did to the cat, it also got the better of me. And damned if the story didn’t deliver! That’s two negatives for a serious positive … I’m going to re-read or -listen, as the case may be, so I can go back and enjoy the Kirkian touches. But I had to get to the end fast the first time! I can’t say yet that I really like Heather, but now she has some context, and it helps. I’d love to see another novel with her in the middle—though I might be more squarely on Team Ace at this point!

REALLY DISLIKE NARRATOR

Although I’m in the minority, I really dislike Angus King’s narration. When he tries to alter his voice for another character, it sounds so unbelievably cartoonish. I can’t effectively rate the story because I had to stop listening after just a few chapters.

Very Good!

Heather! Out there doing her thing!! I enjoyed every single DCI Logan book in the series and every Bob Hoon, and am looking forward to reading all of the DI Heather Filson novels! Great characters, hilariously funny in parts, excellent stories.
I will say that the narrator has to grow on me a bit more— just not what I’m hearing in my head, but that probably has to do more with hearing her in a man’s voice from the Logan novels!
Overall, great and I am already wishing I could begin the next one!

Heather needs to talk to someone and work on her anger issues

I love both the DCI Logan series and Bob Hoon series. The characters are so likable, funny and smart. The storylines draw me in and keep me entertained and on the edge of my seat. Heather, however, is so antagonistic and rude, runs around making poor and usually incorrect decisions/choices, bullying everyone and making herself more and more persona non grata among her peers, families & friends of victims, basically anyone she encounters throughout the book. She’s supposed to be a detective chief inspector/detective inspector?! If she had been even slightly polite, approached situations in a more intuitive or empathetic manner, took a minute to think things through she might have solved the case a lot sooner. Instead she insulted everyone and left me disliking her enough that I’ll stick with Logan & Hoon and give this series a miss in future.

Didn't see that coming!!

I was fully prepared dislike this narrator before she spoke one word, but I was pleasantly surprised. Angus will always be my favorite, but she did "Officer" Fillson (sp?) justice. An excellent story all the way around and I was taken very much by surprise at the ending. Looking forward to more in this series!!

Oh no - so disappointing

As an avid fan of absolutely each and every JD Kirk audiobook so far, this one is a crushing disappointment. Mostly due to the narration - what a dismal change to Angus King! This story is told from a female's perspective, so fine to switch to Ms. McCarron, but the first male voice had me literally fast forward as it was so grating. And it is just nasal and flat. And then Shona's voice acting - Angus King made her perfect, this is the exact opposite, No Irish Accent, no emotion, barely distinguishable from the other ones. The story did not do anything really for me either, but the narration was the killer. Shame - first in all books, had to happen one day. Please bring back a narration that relates to previous voices, at least barely.

Disappointed

Not great, it bored me
Wasn’t interested in what happens to any characters except maybe Heathers dad

Whether that’s the narrator or the author who’s responsible for the lack of drama in this book, I’d say it was a mix of both

I always expect to laugh out loud with a J D Kirk book
Didn’t happen once

Based on this book, DI Heather Filson isn’t for me

Disappointing

I can’t believe I didn’t finish one of this authors books but I gave up at chapter 31 when I was ready to tear my hair out. If you expect a laugh with this book you will be disappointed. To me there were only three characters in it, Heather, her father and uncle. The rest faded into insignificance. The main characters antics were ridiculous, headstrong and unlikable. The narrator was the final straw. Rather than add some life to the story her voice made it worse. Will not be buying another in this series. So sad to say this about this author whose books I have really loved.

Very Disappointing

Got to chapter 15 and still couldn’t work out what the story was about, it didn’t have the humour that J D.
Kirk normally puts into his stories so it came across as very boring. The Narrator didn’t seem to change the tone of her voice enough to distinguish the characters. I won’t be listening to another one. I shall try reading the book instead maybe it will make a difference.

Narration spoiled this for me. I persevered and finished it but it couldn't compare with Logan and Hoon books. Angus brings each and every character to life. This was just narration nothing more. I was so excited to listen but then so disappointed. Sorry

Hard to judge the story as the narration is so bad

Knowing Angus King wasn't narrating I tried to be open to a new voice, but this narrator is truly awful, and not just in comparison with Angus.
Some reviews say the story lacks the usual humour, however it is there, the narrator is just so bad she missed it completely.
The male voices are dreadful, Shona's Irish accent is horrendous and Heather's voice is just pure wrong and doesn't fit.
You're better off reading this book yourself.
There is promise and I'd like to see a whole series for Heather but only if a different narrator is used, hopefully JD Kirk makes this crucial change as his story has been butchered.
I take no joy in leaving this negative review, it's not easy being a narrator, but this performance is just nowhere near good enough
