Publisher's Summary

What if your worst enemy was your only hope?

When a 15-year-old girl fails to make it home after school, DI Heather Filson believes she’s dealing with just another teenage runaway.

The girl’s grandfather, a notorious Glasgow gangster, disagrees. Convinced one of his underworld enemies has grabbed her, he’s prepared to bathe the city in blood in order to bring his princess home.

But as the days pass and the evidence mounts, Heather starts to fear that they’re both wrong and that a brutal killer from the past has returned.

A killer who once stalked the streets of her hometown, preying on vulnerable young victims.

A killer that DI Heather Filson is uniquely familiar with....

Excellent listening

JD Kirk always writes a book to draw you in and entertain.
In my humble opinion, the first D I, Heather Filson book is an absolute treat. I cannot wait for the follow-up books.
Cathleen McCarron has done an excellent job of narrating. She gave the perfect voices to all the characters.
I highly recommend this book.

Perfection

I was one of the few who liked Heather’s character in the Logan series.
Now that she has her own series (hopefully) it’s going to be an entertaining read.
JD’s diversity as an author amazes me again & again.
Looking forward to many more…

JD Kirk does it again

your ability to humanize even the most villainous of characters and make me like them in spite of myself is truly awesome

A Darker Side

Not as much humour one might expect from JD, but this is well worth the listen.

We find out the dark past of DI Heather Filson, an ex of DCI Jack Logan. Some regular characters of the main series come in to play so you get your reference points.

It's an amazing beginning to what I'm sure will be a great series I'll certainly get hooked on.

Child s*x abuse and the pain of dementia brings out the darker story telling, so please be prepared or avoid if you may be triggered.

Cathleen tells the story well, she develops the characters through the book, so be patient. She's well established for the next instalment, make no mistake.

Was surprised how good it was

I was disappointed when I bought the book that Angus King isn't a narrator as he is my favourite, but I like the writers humour, so I got the book anyway. Dammm... she was good the same as Angus, just the female version. I have listened to many narrators and some books I could not finish because of the narrator, but Cathleen was brilliant, I might look up what other books she has done. and of course, the writers story was brilliant as usual, and I did not see the ending at all.

The one that got away

Exceptionally brilliant story I laughed and cried and couldn’t stop until I finished. And the narrator is the best of the best.

JD Kirk has done it again

Loved this latest series premiere, delving into another character from the original series of DCI Jack Logan, DC Heather Filsen.
It’s always a little bit odd hearing a different narrator’s take on characters we know and recognise immediately when read by Angus King, but it’s also great to hear a female narrator too!
Can’t wait for more titles by JD Kirk

My, oh my!

So different to Kirk’s DCI Logan and Hoon series. There are still the trademark attitudes and punchy one-liners, but this novel is a far more brutal, intense, serious-crime read than either Logan or Hoon.

Brilliantly told from the perspective of protagonist DI Heather Stilton. It took me most of the book to like her but that is the point. She is as broken as any of the other characters Kirk has created. I can see why some readers have disliked her but I do feel she’ll become an awesome character in a long-term series.

The crimes are horrific (skip the pages horrible), but Heather’s childhood involvement underpins the unfolding trauma. Guest mentions of Shona McGuire and Jack Logan were excellent touches.

In all, the characters and the story develop and this book grew and grew on me. Initially, I missed Kirk’s trademark wit but the seriousness of the crime would’ve made it inappropriate.

Mature, demanding and brilliant writing from Kirk!
