Story
Sharp-eyed Marianne lives in a white tower made of steel and concrete with her father and the other Professors. Outside, where the land is thickly wooded and wild beasts roam, live the Barbarians, who raid and pillage in order to survive. Marianne is strictly forbidden to leave her civilised world but, fascinated by these savage outsiders, decides to escape. There, beyond the wire fences, she will discover a decaying paradise, encounter the tattooed Barbarian boy Jewel and go beyond the darkest limits of her imagination.

'The scar drew her whole face sideways, and even in profile, with the hideous thing turned away, her face was horribly lopsided, skin, features and all, dragged away from the bone. She was a beautiful girl, a white and golden girl, like moonlight on daisies, a month ago.' And yet the men still hover around her, more out of curiosity than lust, and none more so than the wildly seductive, dangerous funny man Honeybuzzard; lithe as a stick of liquorice, he is the demonic puppet master at the swirling centre of the tale.

Story
I know nothing. I am a tabula rasa, a blank sheet of paper, an unhatched egg. I have not yet become a woman, although I possess a woman's shape. Not a woman, no: both more and less than a real woman. Now I am a being as mythic and monstrous as Mother herself.... New York has become the City of Dreadful Night where dissolute Leilah performs a dance of chaos for Evelyn.

Story
The Periodic Table by Primo Levi is an impassioned response to the Holocaust: Consisting of 21 short stories, each possessing the name of a chemical element, the collection tells of the author's experiences as a Jewish-Italian chemist before, during, and after Auschwitz in luminous, clear, and unfailingly beautiful prose. It has been named the best science book ever by the Royal Institution of Great Britain and is considered to be Levi's crowning achievement.

Very enjoyable. What a smart woman.
Firstly the narrator is excellent. Best I have heard on Audible so far.
The content is a very varied collection of book reviews and essays and views on other literature related topics. As you can see from running time it is bit of a marathon, best broken up into smaller bites.
I intend to seek out some of Carter's own fiction now to understand more of her own talent.

Nibble by nibble - this book took me a year and a half
Antonia Beamish is now the voice of Angela Carter in my head. Excellent reading and excellent journalism.
Of course, some of the pieces connected with me more than others, as is to be expected with a collection of this length. Nevertheless, I am grateful for Carter’s profligacy. I find myself wondering how her sharp eye would have dissected today’s cultural landscape. Oh, the absurdities she would have relished...
