Story

Four year old's might not be able to articulate questions or understand a lot, but the ache of absence is very real. Year after year that ache persisted. Shanelle's father, Chris Dawson, claimed that his wife just needed to get away. This is what he told Lyn's parents and siblings. This is what he told his daughters. But Lyn never returned home.

Much has been written about him, but until now we've only had his songs as clues to his experience from the inside. In Scar Tissue, Kiedis proves himself to be as compelling a memoirist as he is a lyricist, giving us a searingly honest account of the life from which his music has evolved.

-
Story
Fat Joe is a hip-hop legend, but this is not a tale of celebrity; it is the story of Joseph Cartagena, a kid who came of age in the South Bronx during its darkest years of drugs, violence, and abandonment, and how he navigated that traumatizing landscape until he found—through art, friendship, luck, and will—a rocky path to a different life. This memoir, written in Joe’s own intensely compelling voice, moves with the momentum of pulp fiction, but underneath the tragicomedy and riveting tales of the streets and the industry is a thought-provoking story about a generation of survivors.

Publisher's Summary
This is the powerful, untold story of two of the three members of Silverchair, Australia's most awarded musical act. From their beginnings in Ben Gillies' garage, this trio of high school kids from Newcastle, New South Wales, became famous with their smash-hit single 'Tomorrow', setting them on a path to domination of the Australian charts, worldwide touring and fame.
So much has been written about Silverchair over the years but very little has been said by the band's members. In Love & Pain, childhood friends Ben Gillies (drummer) and Chris Joannou (bass player) tell us tales about growing up across the road from each other and starting in Silverchair, wild stories from the peak of their days in the spotlight, and the ups and downs of how their lives have panned out since.
While there are some funny, unforgettable rock 'n' roll stories, there is also all the love and pain that came with being in the band: the cost of fame and intense pressure on two teenagers who had no way of preparing for it; the navigation of their friendships with each other and their relationships with friends and family members; the mistakes they made and the successes they cherished. Gillies and Joannou write with vulnerability and raw and blistering honesty, making for an extraordinary account of a band adored by so many.

Loved it.
So good to finally hear Ben and Chris’s story. It’s important to remember Silverchair is about three dudes, and I still respect all three. Frogstomp was a revelation for a 15 year old me getting into music. After 30 years, I now realise their journey is part of my own journey. Part of my own soundtrack. Now as a musician, listening to and playing their songs, they fill in little emotional holes like warm gravy. That reunion/redemption/farewell tour, however unlikely, would be one of the most epic moments in Australian music.

An recounting of youth thrown into an industry that would normally chew up and spit out someone so young
Loved this! These guys are so talented and at a young age it was more than obvious. Like the music, this book talks about the hi jinx of teens thrown into an adult industry but were guided and supported (sometimes too much) by family and management to give them the longevity their sound deserved. But like us all they aren’t infallible and the pitfalls of money, alcohol, drugs and mental and physical health bring about its own problems. A great story of victory, loss, love, never ending friendship and connections, told from youth to adulthood.

I really enjoyed this
This was an easy read with lots af great memories. Even if you are not a fan of Silverchair, you can still appreciate the talent and drive that made them such a phenomenon in the late 90s and 2000s. They talk respectfully about Daniel Johns and his struggles. But this is Ben and Chris's story. I enjoyed it a lot more than Bernie Taupins memoir, Scattershot - which had too many literary references and was too poetic for my taste.
