Publisher's Summary

This is a story of Jelena Dokic's survival. How she survived as a refugee twice. How she survived on the tennis court to become world number four. But, most importantly, how she survived her father, Damir Dokic, the tennis dad from hell.

From war-torn Yugoslavia to Sydney to Wimbledon, she narrates her hellish ascent to becoming one of the best tennis players in the women’s game, the abuse she endured at the hands of her father and her heartbreaking fall from the top. Jelena never told anyone the full truth of what she went through until now, and her unbreakable spirit will inspire you.

Heartbreaking.

Loved this book so much. Once I started this, it was hard to put down. Having seen Jelena on the tennis circuit over the years her sad story was somewhat familiar, but never imagined the magnitude of the abuse this young girl/woman had to endure and what a strong and amazing young woman she is at the end of all this. “Unbreakable” is a perfect title for this book. Kellie Jones is an excellent narrator. Highly Recommend.

What an eye opener

Sensational book. Opened my eyes to the horrors that some people go through behind closed doors and the incredible strength of character that Jelena had to come through and succeed in Tennis and in life. Congratulations on your life so far. Thanks for sharing and helping me realize that there’s more to the story than what you think you know.

Could not stop listening

Unbelievable is probably still not strong enough to describe this woman’s journey.

Captivating and inspirational - for anyone wanting or needing perspective or assurance that you can overcome challenges in life.

An unforgettable read

This book was incredibly difficult to put down. It was well written by Jelena and smoothly narrated by Kellie. Jelena showed readers that she is very much so a survivor and a beautiful, determined young woman who finds happiness in all she pursues. I will be recommending this to all my bookloving friends and family!

How a famous sportswoman survived vile abuse

Congratulations to Jelena Dokic for writing this extraordinary memoir, with help from a professional writer. The book must be one of the most telling accounts of domestic abuse of all time. How she survived it I do not know - most people including me would have crumbled fairly quickly, I have no doubt. To enjoy all of the book one needs to be a tennis fan, which fortunately I am - but Jelena does make all the tournaments and travel as interesting as she can. The life of a tennis professional seems narrow and clique-like, and I kept wishing she had abandoned it earlier, but it was important to her to use her great talent, understandably. Now one can only thank her for all the enjoyment she brought to lots of people on the tennis court, and wish her no further trauma for the rest of her life. Jelena has had enough to last several lifetimes.
Kellie Jones' reading of the book seemed to me ideal for this book - I was most impressed by her.

Exhausting

Objectively it is easy to look at Jelena and say she stayed in her distress too long, but cultural pressures, family loyalty and the power of fear paralyse. Having said that, she has no problem completely discrediting anyone who wasn't perfect including an ex a coach and more.

A must read

I found it to be one of those 'can't put down' books although many times it was hard to comprehend her experiences. A truly powerful & emotonal story.

How she picks herself up from the ashes time and time again baffles me, a truly inspiring story.

Outstanding Story truly Reflects in Title

I am a tennis player which is why i choose this title and was especially interested to see how it compared to Andre Agassi's book Open.I was gobsmacked by Jelena's story. It was unbelievable that a young professional athlete could experience such abuse and still function yet play professional tennis. Her story of courage was amazing and her desire to reconcile with her abusive deranged father is testament to her spirit and sense of a need to belong and to feel connected to family. It is understandable how she contemplated suicide after the end of her career and i am so glad she seems to have found happiness with her partner. An incredible story of how the human spirit can prevail in the most difficult of circumstances.

Great Book! Touching and sad

I could relate as a ex professional tennis player and not having a normal childhood . Traveling alone at a young age and the pressure I felt from my Dad. The abuse physical and mentally and the toll on your body training from a young age hour's per day causing injuries. Living out of a suit case and eat drink sleep tennis day after day

A tale of true grit

Loved her story and how she is strong after an upbringing like that. In a better environment she would have become a number 1, multi-slam winner. But even more admirable is how she handled herself and truly become bigger than many winners in the traditional sense. Real bravery.

A tennis prodigy

A tennis player who came across on tv as a spoilt brat. This statement couldn't be further from the truth. This is the compelling story of a talented tennis player and her struggle as a refugee, emotional and physical abuse, and the tennis world. A great read.

incredible life story

The story of Jelena Dokic rings a deep resounding bell in a reader's mind. Her story is a story of ferociousness, winning, abuse and family. Unbreakable is an open story of what success driven by grit, abuse and passion looks like. I am indebted to Jelena for such an honest, complete and balanced view on her life. What was going on in people's mind when Jelena was abused but winning?
