Publisher's Summary

On the 200th anniversary of Jane Austen's death, historian Lucy Worsley leads us into the world in which our best-loved novelist lived. This new telling of the story of Jane's life shows us how and why she lived as she did, examining the rooms, spaces and possessions which mattered to her and the way in which home is used in her novels to mean both a place of pleasure and a prison. It wasn't all country houses and ballrooms; in fact her life was often a painful struggle. Jane famously lived a 'life without incident', but with new research and insights Lucy Worsley reveals a passionate woman who fought for her freedom. A woman who, far from being a lonely spinster, in fact had at least five marriage prospects, but who in the end refused to settle for anything less than Mr Darcy.

Really interesting details on Regency life

This was so interesting, not only for learning about Jane Austen but also for life in general for women in the Georgian & Regency periods in Britain.

Yet another Lucy Worsley's treasure

Fascinating, highly enjoyed listening to this book. The only annoying bit was Jane Austen voice narrator, came across as very cold and pompous.

Stunning. Jane would have approved.

Lucy Worsley’s work brings Jane Austen alive in exquisite 3 dimensions. Worsley’s blending of research into Austen’s life; critique of scholarship about her life and work and sensitive speculation about Austen’s history makes an enthralling read. While the narration was excellent I did find myself wishing that Lucy Worsley had narrated. Her rich fruity humorous tones would have spiced up the audiobook.Liz Fallon

Lucy, a queen of history.

it's never hard to finish a book either read or listed to by Lucy Worsley. She rights with true passion and interest. Her sense of humour is always excellent. Jane Austen would of been happy with this, im sure of it.
