About this listen

Long overshadowed by Jane Eyre, Villette is widely admired as one of Charlotte Bronte's finest works. This story of a young teacher at a girl's school in the city of Villette is a particular challenge for the young reader, for it requires maturity of vision, a fine narrative sense - and a command of French! Mandy Weston, a newcomer to Naxos AudioBooks, tells the story magnificently.©2007 Naxos Rights International (P)2007 Naxos Rights International Classics Coming of Age Fiction Genre Fiction Literary Fiction

Observation, imagination of every nuance are lived by the author, emotionsl swirling amidst social striving making completion sad but fulfilling. Superior to Austin for this inclusion.

Just like looking through a magic window into a different place, time and heart. Up there with my all time favourites.

Listened to it twice, a year apart.

I have devoured books for years and had recently begun to be jaded, thinking I had discovered the best English literature had to offer...reader I was wrong. This is a gem of great price, set to perfection by Mandy Weston.

Mandy Weston does a superb job of narrating my favourite Brontë novel. She captures the essence of each character so well.

Par excellence

The story was somewhat interesting and I kept a looking forward to listening, but some of the plot was to convenient. The amount of characters that just happened to turn up in the same town or just happen to know each other or be related was a bit ridiculous. I also wasn’t a fan of the ending. Not because it wasn’t happy, but because it was travelling in one direction and then in the space of a minute changed completely and then the story ended. It was like the author decided the moment before sending it to the printing press that it needed to end differently and quickly through in a random idea.

Didn’t enjoy it as much as I thought I would
