This was certainly different in flavour, if not essence to what we've been used to expect in the series. It took me a little while to follow the story without narration and then to grow used to the actors in the roles previously performed by Bray. But once I did, the story became enjoyable and engrossing. I'm on my 2nd listen-thru and I'm really happy with it now. A great entry to the series and I certainly hope we see more of it in the future. Great work!

It grew on me.

Very different and a little hard to follow at times because of background noise but the voice actors done a good job. Voices matched the characters well. Only moves the story up a little bit so hoping for more depth in the next book.

Different but still alright

Although we have been listening to R.C. Bray for well over 75 plus hours for the series (almost 100 hours with all books) it is still written well.. Almost all narrators were fantastic, but getting used to character's voices that are not from RC Bray did take a bit to get used too..

Worth the investment of time and money, I am just really looking forward to next installment please Craig Alanson....

Another great story, just keep them coming!

I was not a fan of the format. It is a shame there is not a choice between this opera or the standard narration especially when you do need to "read" Homefront to ensure continuity of the overall series.

I had two issues;
1) The operatic music and sound effects. For me, just distracting and annoying, especially the schizophrenic A.I. enough said.

2) Character personalities. There is a concept that when you write a description of something, sometimes "more is less."
For example, "A beautiful beach" is sometimes better than a verbose description of the beach. Sand color, types of palm trees, sunrise or sunset etc. Why, because the reader will fill those details in based on what they think constitutes "a beautiful beach" which is very likely to be different to what is described by the author .

This is similar to using the multiple characters in this format. The story formalised the characters voices and communication styles. I struggled to align the character voices to what I pictured form the previous editions. Smythe sounded like a 20 year old and not the calm reserved image of someone from the regiment. The giggling just jarred - for all characters. I could not picture any of the characters as gigglers etc.

I do wonder if the original book was in this format if I would have got to this point in the series. Maybe, because I like the story itself but changing the readers perceptions of the characters half way through was a gusty call and I am not a fan. Thank goodness we are back to regular programming.

Only if there was a choice

Not I love this series, it's Hollywood in space. Pure silly SciFi. Part of what I love is how it is made, narrated and produced. After 7 books to have something that totally goes against the grain really changed the experience. It wasn't bad..... But it wasn't what we are used to after nearly 100 hours of listening. I feel like the difference in production really got in the way of the story and the characters. Shame as at the base of it all was a good story.

Enjoyable

It might seem different at first, but I just imagine that this is just how Skippy sees the world.

Different, but good

Expeditionary Force is already so good, but this was next level. Perfect casting, though (as awesome as RC Bray is, and no one can replace him as Bishop) I have one thought for skippy… two words: Alan Tudyk.

So Good!
