Publisher's Summary

What happens in the wake of Failure Mode?

The Aftermath of a stunning victory—especially an unexpected, complete, and final victory—should be high-fives all around, listening to politicians give boring congratulatory speeches, and a well-deserved rest for the Merry Band of Pirates. Yes, the galaxy is still a freakin' mess, but that is nothing new, and for a change, that can be someone else's problem.

Until, you know, something really bad happens, and only the Pirates can deal with the problem... Or not.

My all time favourite series

Many book series get old, or repetitive, after a few volumes. This series, so brilliantly narrated, just goes from strength to strength.

The Most POORLY written Expiditionary force book to date.

the performance was as always phenomenal. what I didn't like was that honestly most of "Aftermath" should have been put in the bin and be combined with the sequel of this book.
I feel the author has fluffed this particular books story up so much to make the book longer and fill it up with anything remotly interesting or funny.

Hes clearly set up the story for a sequel and if he continues his writing it will most likely be another 3-5 books when in essence it does not need to be that many books.
I've read over 17 of your books. Just get to the point and write a big ending epic like the last wheel of time book or any brandon Sanderson novel out there.
Why drag out the ending of your magnum opus?.
write a book that actually has a freaking ending. make it massive and epic because Skippy deserves that. We NEED that. Even if the book is 48 hours long. put everything in and just stop dragging out the plot. this is the worst book in this series because 3 QUARTERS of this book is UTTERLY BORING.
Do Better.

This is where I get off

Being this far into a series I think most people know what they are going to get. I stuck with the series cause by the time I got to book 10 I was just starting to get tired of the formula. I heard an interview that the story would end at book 15 so I decided to stick it out hoping there would be some change and more interesting devations. Sadly there were no deveations it was same old same old.

Skippy calling humans monkeys and acting like hes the best even though the humans on board are constantly coming up with things he cant

Bishop coming up with something Skippy didnt think of despite Skippy insisting it isnt possible. Skippy will then get mad say something like "I really hate you right now. Stupid monkeys coming up with ideas blah blah blah..."

Big tech explinations getting into the nitty gritty of tech that doesnt exist to explain how they did this new fantastic solution to their problem that they for some reason cant do ever again.

I'm not upset that the series has gotten this samey. I'm certain its what keeps many readers coming back. I will no longer be one of those readers. With this great cast of characters I cant sit through the same story over and over and over with such small changes. i'm tired and without any display that these are going to deviate from what Craig is comfortable with I cant stay on this train any longer.

This is my stop, i'm getting off

Why!?

I wish I had stopped at Failure Mode. It was a far better ending than this kickstart to another 15 books.

Thanks for abusing my love for these characters, but you won't sucker me again.

FYI - Bray was flawless, as usual. I was just not going to allow a 5 start rating of him to reflect on this book. Skippy and Joe are just sadly dead to me now.

Just stop at book 15

If you, like I, became highly annoyed with books 10-14 because they were quite literally the same repeating story then buckle up because here we go again. This is setting up the series’s to keep going on and on and on and on and on forever with less passion and almost no original thought. It’s time for the author to really move on no matter how much his publisher is offering.

YES!!!

I was very excited for this book and I wasn’t disappointed. It starts with Joe’s and Adam’s domestic life and I read a review from someone that really hated it. I loved it. It kind of showed a broader view of was has happened since the last book and made it more personal for me. I listened to the book in one go and actually did not see the ending coming until the very end. I thought that something else must be going on but I was still surprised.
I love this series so I might be more forgiving than some if some parts are not perfect. I can listen to the series over and over. RC Bray is perfect for this series.
Looking forward to the next book.

The only thing good about this book is the narrator. Not going it bother telling you why it sucks. Done with the story, done with the author.

I keep waiting to get sick of it but I just don't

I just enjoy the fact that eventually most of the things get explained. still love the characters. rc bray in my top 3 narrators of all time. glad the story continues. still want to know how Skippy fixed himself again but that may come later. I think I'm gonna listen to it again when I'm done writing this.

I knew it wasn't over

I was confident the last book was not the end. It was not how I have seen that Craig Alanson does endings. I was confident there was more to the series. There was just to much story line content left onnthe board. Margaret and Joe's couple relationship had really just started up well. There was so many unanswered questions about humans and other 2 senior species. Then drawing more attention to this outside threat. Why even bother if it wasn't going to be wound into it eventually. I fully expected the outsiders to be the next threat. It threw me off when this volume seemed to ge about yet another Elder AI threat storyline. That line had already had multiple go-a-rounds. What a great way to bring them in. At first, I was thinking what a telegraphed anticlimactic ende it was leading up to. But nope!! We find out it's an OUTSIDER after all!! Finally the next evolution has begun!! Great ending to lead into the next volume.

As an aside, it's rather interesting that theses seemingly unkillable, considered plague like, beings, that even the most powerful of all race, the Elders, were terrified of. Their actions were those thought of asas "inflatrators" That Bishop, and Skippy coin the name as "Outsiders" Certainly seems self descriptive namegiven where they come from i.e. outside the Galaxy. It did immediately trigger thought of the comparison of another famous Series with simialrly powerfup evil beings also of the same coined name "The Outsiders" I am speaking of the Dreseden Files and the Outsiders there were similar being outside organized dimensional space/time. Thought to be unkillable, ability to morph their physical matter unbelievably powerful. They work by deception, mental manipulation and posession etc. The similarities are hard to ignore once you compare them. I doubt it's where the idea xamefrom but just one of those weird coincidences as these are both two of my fav series.

This volume was great with more development of the lives and characters themselves. Looking forward to find out where this leads with the next volume. Hopefully, this rebuffs all the negative comments from the last volume jumping to the assumption that it was the end if the series.

5 stars across the board!!!

Disappointing and wasted time and money!!

95% back story non relevant Blah Blah Blah Blah!!!! 2% Kick ask story 3% Bishop baking.

Saying that I’m so disappointed by this book is an understatement!!! Literally waited all year for a book I’m struggling to finish. It breaks my heart that this series has gone the way it has.

I won’t be continuing the series and strongly considering asking for a refund.

here we go again...

I guess my stupid monkey brain was in full gear thinking the author listening to fans about the abrupt ending of the series last book and would have meant the story telling would be more refined. This feels like an 80s film montage of where an old team gets back together but dragged over an 19 hour diolog. if you're expecting unanswered questions to be answered this book probably isn't for you as more are added and most of the book like the last is puffed out without anything really happening.

Oh dear - it's gone "Picard"

I love all the EF books. The dynamic between Joe and Skippy is, well, awesome. But this? A semi-retired general puts his gloves back on? It smacks of Picard. And Picard wasn't good. One of Joe's kids is even called René!

Would have been nice to tie up the loose ends from Failure Mode, but this didn't. I don't know where it was going. It just kind of pondered on pointlessly. It felt like a Hollywood sequel cash-in, or some mediocre follow-up fan fiction. There wasn't actually any story sandwiched between the first chapter (catchup) and the last (shocking revelation).

R. C. Bray was however brilliant in performing as always.

Time to end the series

Been waiting for this as done the audible series couple times and massive disappointment it’s time to finish this as peaked and with this book it’s getting boring, too much crap just to fill 19 hr slot could have had new enemy coming into the galaxy but failed with this idea and time to end it for good, I will no doubt listen to the whole series again but wont listen to this on

On a good note RC Bray is simply one of the best in my top three with Luke daniels and Phil Thron if Bray wasn’t narrating this I would have asked for money back

Meh…still waiting for the excitement

It was ok. I enjoyed it BUT it never reaches a peak like the past books. I get that it may be the first part of a three part adventure but i got bored. I love this series and I’m gutted I didn’t enjoy it how I should have. There is a massive gap in characters with Smythe now gone. There’s just no charisma. Hoping for more in the next book.

Filler for the next book

Started off good but towards the end I started to feel like most of it was just pointless filler, the ending just seems to come out of nowhere and a lot of convient things just seem to happen right towards the end. At least the ending provides a good starting point/plot for the next book, hopefully it will be better

A good continuation of Joe's story

This is another good addition to the series, and if you like Alanson's style, you'll probably like this. A significant portion of Alanson's writing seems to incorporate elements of the mundane, almost being slice-of-life, dealing with the dynamics and routine of the characters in the worlds he creates. While to some it'll be slow, for me it fleshes out the characters and the world, and combined with Bray's narration it makes for a solid first listen and good background listening on repeat.

Filler, and more filler

This latest installment is utterly predictable and packed full of filler, leading to the most underwhelming ending which, while technically being a cliffhanger, is more like a wet fart. The whole thing stinks, and is ultimatelya disappointment. Can easily be skipped.
