Publisher's Summary

This is the way the world ends. Again.

Three terrible things happen in a single day. Essun, masquerading as an ordinary schoolteacher in a quiet, small town, comes home to find that her husband has brutally murdered their son and kidnapped their daughter.

Mighty Sanze, the empire whose innovations have been civilisation's bedrock for a thousand years, collapses as its greatest city is destroyed by a madman's vengeance. And, worst of all, across the heartland of the world's sole continent, a great red rift has been been torn which spews ash enough to darken the sky for years. Or centuries. But this is the Stillness, a land long familiar with struggle, and where orogenes - those who wield the power of the Earth as a weapon - are feared far more than the long, cold night.

Essun has remembered herself, and she will have her daughter back. She does not care if the world falls apart around her. Essun will break it herself, if she must, to save her daughter.

The first novel in a new series by award-winning author N. K. Jemisin where a mother struggles to find her daughter in a postapocalpytic world.

    "Fantastic world building"

Loved this book, so unique with a stunning storyline. Jemisin is such a great writer, the Hugo Award was well deserved. One of the best books I have listened to. Narration excellent.

I found narrator's voice unclear sometimes and needed to replay sections. Book was excellent though.

    "Good, but not great."

At times so compelling I was up until 2am listening; at times oddly unsatisfying. I have mixed feelings about this story. I enjoyed it, but I don't really care enough to buy book 2. Robin Miles' narration is exemplary - most likely it's her voice that kept me listening at times.

Narrator sounded like a robot to start with, but this improved after a few chapters. I liked the apocalyptic theme mixed with fantasy.

Narrator was excellent at bringing the story to life and the story itself was gripping, entertaining and completely unlike anything I've read before. I can't wait to start Book 2.

    THE FIFTH SEASON

the structure, the POV's, the characters, the world building, the way systemic oppression is interwoven into this fantasy narrative .... makes this book one you will either hate or fall madly in love with.

With this book I really needed to savour and digest everything that was revealed within those chapters about Damaya, Syenite and Essun ... to have my mind blown towards the end 😳

Since I've just finished the first installment, that sort of left my heart in ruin 😢 ... I've decided that I need some time to properly recuperate before I pick up the sequel. So far this was a truly magnificent reading experience.

    "Very interesting world"

    Good stuff all around.
Not sure what I feel about the fact that none of the main characters had a normal sexual orientation.
Mostly it just felt like the book desperately tried to be very current with all the fuss about genders and whatnot.
Anyway the book didn't put too much focus on it so I wasn't distracted by it.

    "Struggled."

Struggled to get into this one. For me, the narration by Robin Miles was quite stilted. The muddied accents she put on for some of the characters were very strange. The sci-fi aspects of the story were very compelling though.

"Well read, decent characters, plodding plot"

This is an odd book. The author does a great job of world building and populates it with some compelling characters but managed to have them do very little other than wander around aimlessly. There's an occasional reveal, which all feel fairly arbitrary, and some slightly strange narrative choices which don't really work.

That said, it's certainly original and the narration is excellent.

    "some great ideas but..."

I felt some areas needed further exposition and the characters were never fully fleshed out... I always felt I was skimming over the surface of the story without being drawn in. what brought it home was the lack of emotion at losing certain characters, didn't bat an eyelid when they kicked the bucket.

"Just finished this book and I am still Confused!"

It took awhile to get into this book, I started listening to it whilst dog walking. But once into the story I would end up continuing to listen when I got home and sometimes at night in bed. However, I Have finished this book and I am still Confused! Seriously, will someone explain the 3 main female characters. I thought it was the same female at different points in her life, but it doesn't quit follow if that's the case and if it's different main characters, then I have no idea what the link was. I think I may have nodded off during some key story points! Lol

"Good premise and well written. Gripping! "

Well narrated. An unpretentious but imaginative story. The central concept of an ever shifting harsh world and the talented /cursed people who can cause or prevent its earthquakes and cataclysms was very intriguing.

"Heard good things but disappointed. "
Would you try another book written by N. K. Jemisin or narrated by Robin Miles?

Yes, the book was well narrated.

Would you be willing to try another book from N. K. Jemisin? Why or why not?

No, I found the writing style confusing, it was hard to follow the characters, to understand who was who and what was happening.

What does Robin Miles bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you had only read the book?

I wouldn't have gotten as far in to the book (never mind finishing it) If it hadn't been read to me.

Did The Fifth Season inspire you to do anything?

Not to buy a complete series of 3 books based on a review.

    Story
    "Overrated and incompetent"

I gave up on this book halfway through. It is a book about a woman at three stages of her life where she meanders aimlessly through a mildly interesting numenera-like world. As story goes - nothin happens. The world would be interesting if you have not read that kind of fiction before. If you have though you will be presented with a lot of clichés. The writing is completely incompetent though. One of the "stories" is written in second person(as in "you pick up the bag" style of sentences) with every third sentence being in third person. The other two parts are in third person but about the same person. The tense used for the storytelling is mostly present except in some sentences which are in past tense. I think that this book is written for people who want to feel smart as they figure out mysteries that are obvious and wonder at internally inconsistent scraps of information that suggest something far more interesting than the contents of this book are.

Loved it. I was confused at the beginning, but it all paid off at the end. It's a long book, but I got through it in a week and I am very glad to know there are two more and I'll be starting the next one tonight!
