"Look out for Zach, and don't hit on him." My brother's request sounds easy enough. Keep an eye out for his best friend on campus and keep my hands to myself. Easy. Even if Zach is a quintessential nerd, who I've always thought was cute, I don't have the time to think with my...stick. There's only one stick I should be focused on this year, and that's my hockey stick. My goal once I graduate is to get an NHL contract. The last thing I need is a distraction. On or off the ice. Only, keeping to the rules is harder than I thought it would be.

An Instant New York Times Bestseller
A Goodreads Most Anticipated Book
"Suspenseful, sexy, and with incredibly entertaining storytelling, the first in Yarros' Empyrean series will delight fans of romantic, adventure-filled fantasy."—Booklist, starred review
"Fourth Wing will have your heart pounding from beginning to end... A fantasy like you've never read before."―#1 New York Times bestselling author Jennifer L. Armentrout
Enter the brutal and elite world of a war college for dragon riders from New York Times bestselling author Rebecca Yarros
Twenty-year-old Violet Sorrengail was supposed to enter the Scribe Quadrant, living a quiet life among books and history. Now, the commanding general—also known as her tough-as-talons mother—has ordered Violet to join the hundreds of candidates striving to become the elite of Navarre: dragon riders.
But when you’re smaller than everyone else and your body is brittle, death is only a heartbeat away...because dragons don’t bond to “fragile” humans. They incinerate them.
With fewer dragons willing to bond than cadets, most would kill Violet to better their own chances of success. The rest would kill her just for being her mother’s daughter—like Xaden Riorson, the most powerful and ruthless wingleader in the Riders Quadrant.
She’ll need every edge her wits can give her just to see the next sunrise.
Yet, with every day that passes, the war outside grows more deadly, the kingdom's protective wards are failing, and the death toll continues to rise. Even worse, Violet begins to suspect leadership is hiding a terrible secret.
Friends, enemies, lovers. Everyone at Basgiath War College has an agenda—because once you enter, there are only two ways out: graduate or die.
The Empyrean series is best enjoyed in order.

The story is amazing but the narration is not
The narrator was definitely sick while recording the first 1/2 of this book you can hear them sniffle and struggle to breath. However, the book is incredible and had me captivated from the first chapter. This should definitely be re-recorded.

Narration is gross
The story is great but the narrator was obviously VERY sick when they recorded this. She has a very strong head cold and you can hear her struggling for breath, swallowing and making disgusting snotty sounds all the time. It's really gross and distracting. they should re-record this and do it justice. buy the book instead!

Great story - but like… why no one pull reader aside after the first 20 minutes to be like - yooo maybe let’s do this when you’re not knocking on deaths door tho…
At first it’s like ooo she has a husky thing going on - and then you’re like oh… she’s suuuper unwell. Kinda spicy but mostly gross.. mostly

Not sure how this has such rave reviews
Who can feel anything for any of these characters? No one has any depth or reason for doing anything that they are doing. I am very confused.
The performance of the book was ok, the editing of the recording was terrible. Many, many double breath intakes, which to me is one of the most important edits an audiobook needs to watch out for. Seemed to sort it out for second half of book. If I could return, I would.

Sick narrator = all sorts of disgusting sounds
10 chapters in and I love the story, but the narrator is clearly sick as she’s narrating (so far). The noises associated with this are disgusting, and they should be edited out as they’re detracting from an otherwise truly interesting story.

The narrator was obviously sick with a cold for the first 10 chapters. It would be great if these chapters were redone. Otherwise the story was enjoyable, even though a bit predictable. Looking forward to book 2.

Cliched and poorly written
Really lazy writing filled with tropes and cliches. The main character is an insufferable, overpowered Mary Sue... seriously I've read fanfic with better original characters. The ending was so predictable.

Loaded with tired YA tropes
First things first - the target audience is clearly women under 25, and I'm neither of those! This is a Young Adult (YA) novel, complete with all the tropes you come to expect in YA novels. You've got a love triangle, a brooding bad boy, a protagonist who's both vulnerable AND super special, all in a special school for special people. There's constant commentary on how sexy that brooding bad boy is and how much she hates him. And the sex scene was just over the top gratuitous (though maybe that's a plus for some?) The psycho murder boy character is terribly one dimensional - my least favourite character in the book by far. Nothing about him makes sense and I'm reducing my score by one star just for him.
THAT SAID, it wasn't all bad. I still found it to be a mildly entertaining read and the final act, with its climactic battle, was the best part by far.
Like I said, I'm not the target audience. If you're into YA novels, or you like some easy reading with a mostly predictable plot and a 20 minute sex scene, then this is the book for you.

Teenagers first fantasy book
Everything in this has been done better before,
Overall it has some good ideas, but it's just executed so poorly.
Forced plot points, bad writing, insane contrivances.
Sit and really listen to the dialogue, bonkers it's gotten this far in ratings

Great story narrator is congested
I loved the story and couldn’t put it down. The narrator has a great voice but she’s congested throughout the entire book and it’s distracting. Audible should edit and re-record, it’s a disservice to those of us who paid for the audio book.

Erotica with Dragons
Listen, I enjoyed this book for the first 14 hours. It’s interesting, there’s tension, the heroine is great. But at the 15 hour mark, this books turns into an erotica and that consumes the rest of the story. There’s too much overly descriptive sex for the fantasy genre. I was excited to see where this series was going and now I’m bowing out.

I Fell Victim to the hype.
I kept seeing this book recommended on social media so I gave it a chance and really tried to like it. After finishing it, i can only assume they were all paid sponsorships because of how bad this book turned out to be.
It reads like a poorly written teenage romance with dragons and bad smut. All the characters are in their 20’s but have the mental maturity of 14-16 year olds. The plot only makes sense if you don’t think about it. I had to skip the “spicy” content, not for being too explicit, but for just being so cringey. The romantic dialogue felt like it was trying too hard to be sexy and left little to the imagination, unfortunately.
The only positives i can think of is that some of action sequences were pretty well written and enjoyable to listen to.
Overall i would not recommend this book.

Amazing story, terrible narration!
This story was absolutely amazing! I loved the fantasy, the tension, the fmc, the dragons and their personalities and basically everything about the story. What I didn’t like, was the narration. It was incredibly frustrating and distracting to listen to someone with congestion narrate. The constant gulps of breath and nose sniffing made me almost give up about 1/3 of the way in. Luckily, I stuck it out and was rewarded with a great story. I can’t wait for book 2!

Disgusting Narration Ruined It
I couldn’t stomach this narration and had to return the book. The constant sick noises literally turned my stomach. I really hope the author didn’t pay for this terrible quality work. I own over 550 audible books and this is the worst narration I’ve ever heard on Audible.

My god, why record an audio boom when you’re sick
Story was absolutely incredible and riveting.
Narrator almost ruined it for me. You can tell she’s congested by the amount of times you can hear her swallow mucus and breathe weird. Christ, Did no one listen to the audio first before releasing it???

Fantastic book, awful narrator
This book is phenomenal! One of the best adult fantasy books I have read in a long time. The female narrator isn't a great choice though, you can hear her gasping for breath and swallowing really loudly throughout the book. She is also supposed to be a 20 year old woman and she sounds like a significantly older woman. I still think it's worth the purchase though bc this book is just too fantastic!

Redundant Romance
Romance can be an incredible asset in a story but only if it is as well done as other elements in the story. In Fourth Wing, the romance, or elements related to it, were incredibly repetitive and seemed to add very little value to the rest of the story. The protagonist regularly had the same lustful/romantic thoughts/narrative spelled out time and time ago. This redundancy ended up ruining the experience of this book for me.

A romance novel
So the story is ok. Pretty typical story of a character that doesn't fit in and seems to be below her peers that overcomes due to her stubbornness and determination. There's nothing wrong with that... that kind of story, especially in a "school" setting, works well. And in this area the book does fine. The dragons are pretty one dimensional but still interesting.
But the author wrote way too much as a romance novel. Think PG-13 Jackie Collins. There are whole chapters I eventually had to skip because I just didn't care to hear another several minutes about Violet's unwitting attraction to the dangerous hunk. Sure, if you like teenage type romance stories, you may like it. For me, I'm out.
And yes, the narrator was clearly congested for the first several days. Pretty cheap that they didn't rerecord.

Great story, mediocre audio
Narrator sounded like she needed to constantly blow her nose? It was really distracting.
I’m British so biased against American accents but it wasn’t amazing - would have loved some more differentiation between characters’ voices.
Overall very good and great story! Definitely recommend

No quality control
This audio book is dreadful. There has been no quality control and I'm shocked that this managed to make it out into the world. There's barely any voice change for characters and there's a lot of characters in this book so that gets confusing. The narrator sounds constantly congested. I swore at one point halfway through the narrator changed but no it was just lines being re-recorded but sounding completely different. There's breaths and swallowing and all together it's just a horrible experience. Don't listen to the audiobook.

Ugh, Rebecca Soler’s narration was grating
I was here for Teddy Hamilton, which was something yeah—if I hadn’t read the hardcover and only listened to the audiobook— ’d likely have hated this book because Teddy only narrated the finish chapter in a POV shift.
This book is wild and funny and gripping; but Rebecca Soler voiced everyone as if they were shouting and it completely ruined the the tone of scenes. Her make voices were horrible. Even the spicy scenes were ruined.
A word to the wise for anyone hoping for Teddy’s wonderful vocal work and is super picky with narrators, avoid this. Just read it if you can. You might like this book that way.

Narration is awful!
I can't even get into the story for the narration! It really sounds like she's very unwell with a cold, very flegmy with trouble breathing! Honestly, I feel that this should be re-recorded & sent out to those who have already purchased this audio book. I was really excited to read this one because I'd seen such good stuff about it on socials, but I literally just cannot listen to this narrator. I can't comment on the story itself because I just can't get into it, so I didn't wanna give that a negative review as that's unfair to the author.
I hope this gets fixed, as I'd really like to read this book.

YA at its worst
Predictable, and cringy. Turns into bad erotica 2/3 the way though. Guess I’m not the target audience!

Great story, poor recording
Loved the story but the performance was strangely disjointed like she'd re-recorded bits - offputting

Promising but stow the teenage sex fantasies
The premise is strong, the characters interesting bit the sex fan service is interminable after a certain point. It goes well beyond past progressing the plot and well into average Wattpad teenage fantasy. Couldn’t stick it out to the end.

Good Story, Terrible performance
Voice acting was horrible, really took away from the story, recording was all over the place, fragmented and different audio qualities. Voice Actor changed in the last chapter, which was an improvement but was still annoying, but I have my own reasons for disliking it.
The story was good, we got maybe one more sex scene than we really needed, it started to feel like filler more than anything, but otherwise a good tale. Will definitely be picking up the physical book for the sequel, spare my ears the pain.

Great Story Poor Narration
The story truly lives up to the hype & definitely worth a credit.
The only thing I marked it down for was the narrators. The lady sounded like she had some nasal issues going on and there were some weird stops and background noises. The swap to the male narrator was just terrible. Thankfully it’s only the last chapter. It added absolutely nothing.
