“The first year is when some of us lose our lives. The second year is when the rest of us lose our humanity." Xaden Riorson

Everyone expected Violet Sorrengail to die during her first year at Basgiath War College-Violet included. But Threshing was only the first impossible test meant to weed out the weak-willed, the unworthy, and the unlucky.

Now the real training begins, and Violet’s already wondering how she’ll get through. It’s not just that it’s grueling and maliciously brutal, or even that it’s designed to stretch the riders’ capacity for pain beyond endurance. It’s the new vice commandant, who’s made it his personal mission to teach Violet exactly how powerless she is–unless she betrays the man she loves.

Although Violet’s body might be weaker and frailer than everyone else’s, she still has her wits and a will of iron. And leadership is forgetting the most important lesson Basgiath has taught her: Dragon riders make their own rules.

But a determination to survive won’t be enough this year. Because Violet knows the real secret hidden for centuries at Basgiath War College and nothing, not even dragon fire, may be enough to save them in the end.

The Empyrean series is best enjoyed in order.

I was so excited for this book to be disappointed. For me, the book felt rushed. First part felt like the same thing just different chapter. Yes, there was some good part but overall it was slow with retelling of information we already know from book one or just been told a chapteror two before. I struggled to pay attention and debated about DNFing as there are other books released on the same day that I alsl wanted to read. In part two, it was a lot better, making up for the first part one. In the end I would rate this book 3.5. I wanted more of the dragons

Sadly Disappointing

I have to say first book was enjoyable this one was even better there was not a moment of loosing interest while watching I am so glad that nothing dragged no scenes no story line etc kept me on the edge the entire time I love the ending such a great cliff hanger looking forward to the third book.

Intense action

Brilliant story! I absolutely loved the first book and loved this one too- I just tired of violets incessant self depreciation given what a strong character she is but no doubt by the end of the series she will own all of it. The voice actor for Violet took these novels to another level- honestly one of the best I have listened to. She was so brilliant it set extremely high standards for zayden’s voice actor to meet that sadly he did not.

Loved Violets voice actor- she her execution was masterful! The voice actor for Zayden was awful.

Gripping, exciting story. Interesting and compellingly constructed world. A few too many and overly long sex scenes that didn’t add to the narrative or character building. But overall, I greatly enjoyed the book, the world and the characters. Looking forward to the next instalment … a lot.

Very enjoyable - just a bit too much sex

Fast faced, exciting, well written, extremely well narrated. I’ve thoroughly enjoyed both books in the series. Thank first one was amazing- this one was even better. Can’t wait for the sequel!

One of the best books I’ve listened to.
