Story
There has never been a dragon quite like Ruth - he's small, agile, able to communicate with fire lizards and has an uncanny ability to know exactly when he is. His bond with the young Lord Holder Jaxom is uniquely strong thanks to their unlikely connection and the fact that nearly everybody else on Pern thought the diminutive dragon wouldn't survive to adulthood. With Jaxom set to inherit control of his Hold, the pair is banned from fighting Thread, their flying time strictly limited at the insistence of the Weyrleaders and Lord Holders.

Story
For generations, the dragonriders had dedicated their lives to fighting Thread, the dreaded spores that periodically rained from the sky to ravage the land. On the backs of their magnificent telepathic dragons they flew to flame the deadly stuff out of the air before it could reach the planet's surface. But the greatest dream of the dragonriders was to find a way to eradicate Thread completely, so that never again would their beloved Pern be threatened with destruction.

For the first time in more than three years, best-selling authors Anne McCaffrey and Todd McCaffrey have teamed up again to do what they do best: add another chapter to the Dragonriders of Pern. Like every other citizen of the Federation of Sentient Planets, Lunzie Mespil believed that no harm would come to her, but when the planet pirates attack the space liner on which she is a passenger, she might have to suffer more than just inconvenience.
Publisher's Summary
The beautiful planet Pern seemed a paradise to its new colonists - until unimaginable terror turned it into hell. Suddenly, deadly spores were falling like silver threads from the sky, devouring everything - and everyone - in their path. It began to look as if the colony, cut off from Earth and lacking the resources to combat the menace, was doomed.
Then some of the colonists noticed that the small, dragonlike lizards that inhabited their new world were joining the fight against Thread, breathing fire on it and teleporting to safety. If only, they thought, the dragonets were big enough for a human to ride and intelligent enough to work as a team with a rider.
And so they set their most talented geneticist to work to create the creatures Pern so desperately needed - Dragons!

Abridged, poor quality.
It did not state in the summary that this version is abridged. I've read the book, I know it is a good story, but it makes no sense in this recording. Adrienne Barbeau is not a good narrator, all the characters sound the same. The quality of the "remastered" recording is terrible.

Sadly a very poor effort. Strange pauses in sentences, gaps in the story and a very harsh voice narrating what was once a lovely tale of Pern. As a rework, it failed. I shall return this version and hope one day it will be recorded properly.

So disappointing
I really should have read the other reviews before being this. Anne McCaffrey is one of my favourite authors, and I have read all her Pern books many times over the years. I was really looking forward to this one, but wow, what a let-down.
The narrator is truly awful, and can't pronounce so many common words correctly, not to mention her dismal attempt at an Irish accent. I didn't know if I should laugh or cry.
Also this abridged. No, that's not the correct term. This has been butchered by a psychopath. There is no attempt to make a coherent whole out of the story, and instead huge chunks have just been left out, causing a confusing stop-start with new characters and scenes popping up at random.
I really can't find the words to say how bad this is. I wish there was a better version, as this is one of my favourites of the series, but I can't seem to find one.
Take my advice: save your money/credits and listen to something that is not produced and read by the team that created this monster.

Great story bad version
The story itself is a good this version however not worth the money. Terrible narration mispronounced names awful fake Irish accent seriously it is that bad it actually detracted from the story. This is a version of this great book I regret wasting a credit on not worth it just read the book yourself you'll likely enjoy the story more absolutely terrible performance by the narrator also far to much has been removed leaving glaring gaps its just not worth the time taken to listen to this version.

Badly butchered Version of a great book
This is the 1st book I signed up for with Audible and actually paid money for. It nearly put me off Audible for good. This is one of the worst translations of a beloved story into an Audiobook ever. It feels like a really bad cash grab with no love for the source material, nor for a good performance. The story is cut to pieces, glued together with no care, jumps around the narrative like a game of hopscotch and In general, left me pretty confusedat 1st, and then furious. I though I had gotten a corrupted file with parts of the book missing. Now I have to conclude that this an "abridged" version. More like a "cut up at random & glued back together without care" version. If you love the dragon riders of Pern, save your money/credits and skip this one.
