Publisher's Summary

The exhilarating adventures of Anne McCaffrey's best selling Crystal Singer series continue with Killashandra, a story that mixes interplanetary political intrigue with passionate romance. In this installment, Killashandra Ree's crystal claim has been exhausted, forcing her to take a new assignment and leave her new lover back on their native Ballybran. She goes undercover on a distant, desolate planet, searching desperately for the crystal that will save her - and, quite possibly, the fate of the entire universe.

Good story but is abridged

Would you try another book from Anne McCaffrey and/or Adrienne Barbeau?

I like about anything by Anne McCaffrey and this is no exception.

What didn’t you like about Adrienne Barbeau’s performance?

This isn't about Adrienne's performance, which was quite good, but impacts the performance. The recording almost sounds like it was playing back through an old tinny AM radio.

What character would you cut from Killashandra?

All the characters are important.

Any additional comments?

Why is there no unabridged versions of the Crystal Singers books? Three hours touches the surface but there is so much more that is missing.

Disjointed

Would you recommend this book to a friend? Why or why not?

Not in its abridged form.

How would you have changed the story to make it more enjoyable?

Have it re-recorded in an unabridged format

What does Adrienne Barbeau bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?

Character and flaver to the characters

Do you think Killashandra needs a follow-up book? Why or why not?

Not Possible to have a follow-up book, the author has passed away.

Anne McCaffrey was the best!

The crystal singer trilogy is so amazing. The 3 stories just draw you in period. Having read these multiple times they are quick read, but they're the best!

Dissappointing quality, but still a good read.

One of my favorite line of McCaffrey books, I was really looking forward to it, but the crackling of the sound quality is awful!

Abridged, sadly

This series is one of my favorite ones. I've been reading it over and over again for over 20 years... so was thrilled to see it on audible, and then very sad to discover it's abridged. All the major story points are there, but all the lovely details have been removed. The narrator talks FASTER than pretty much every other narrator on audible, but once I got used to it I realized it was at the same speed I read, and as a result I found it easier to drop into that film in your head sensation I get from reading that is usually missing on audible.

Another dear book-friend

Anne McCaffrey cannot go wrong, tho I’m not a fan of abridged adaptations. So much of the details are simply skipped. You get the sense of the story, just not the depth. Still, it fills some crocheting time.

Definitely abridged

The story starts mid sentence. I've read the paper and e- versions several times, and I was still confused as the narration started. but once I got past the initial confusion, the story took over and I was immersed in the world of crystal singing.

Killashandra Ree has been working the ranges, unable to repeat her amazing first claim of the highly sought after black crystal. Dissatisfied with the less lucrative, but still profitable, other colors, she ages to an off planet assignment that will take her away from Ballybran for a year. The trip will stretch the limits of her symbiant and her performance abilities, as well as her relationship with Lanzecki, her some-time lover and full-time Guild Master. The assignment will also put her undercover for the Federated Sentient Planets, investigating the planet's government of Elders. Killa's adventure starts with state dinners, followed by being kidnapped and marooned on a desert island. But everyone underestimates the Crystal Singer and love and justice win the day.

In true McCaffery style, the characters are well developed and the storyline is intensely captivating, even in the abridged version. Adrienne Barbeau IS the voice of McCaffery's worlds and delivers another stellar performance.

A story of love in the midst of political rebellion

I have read this book countless times and was really happy to find an audible version. I love the way that McCaffrey engages her audience's emotions while introducing fabulous places, odd names and technology which she manages to imbue with a normality which means that we accept this science fiction seamlessly. Killashandra is a feisty female lead and I would certainly recommend this book to teenaged girls, especially those who like music and adventure stories. The only thing which mars this rendition is the rather brutal abridgement which spoils the gentle pace of the book and the galloping vocal performance which sometimes makes the listener feel that there were orders to keep the performance down to 2and a half hours and that the actor was racing to finish.

abridged-takes away the depth

I love this book and read it over and over. I was looking forward to hearing it. So so sad that it has been abridged. it has taken away all depth and feeling from the story 😣

A top quality piece of writing ruined.

I have read all of Anne McCaffrey’s solo books from day one, until eye problems restricted the time that I was able to spend reading. Audible has been a godsend, until now, this reading is a travesty, cut to bits and that badly. The film editors would have called them jump cuts, chunks removed with no lead in or out.

OLD AUDIO

Although I love this series of books by Anne McCaffrey, it was a bit disappointing to realise (after I had purchased them) that the audio was a little distorted with age and seemed very rushed. It did not completely diminish my love of these books but then again, I go back and re-read them every few years so they are very familiar which helped. This audio is for people who know the book only -- for first time listeners, buy something else and read the series for yourself...

At least as good as it's prequel.

Entertaining story telling and I felt the narrator did it justice. A favourite revisited, thanks to Audible.
