Story
There has never been a dragon quite like Ruth - he's small, agile, able to communicate with fire lizards and has an uncanny ability to know exactly when he is. His bond with the young Lord Holder Jaxom is uniquely strong thanks to their unlikely connection and the fact that nearly everybody else on Pern thought the diminutive dragon wouldn't survive to adulthood. With Jaxom set to inherit control of his Hold, the pair is banned from fighting Thread, their flying time strictly limited at the insistence of the Weyrleaders and Lord Holders.

But the greatest dream of the dragonriders was to find a way to eradicate Thread completely, so that never again would their beloved Pern be threatened with destruction.

Suddenly, deadly spores were falling like silver threads from the sky, devouring everything - and everyone - in their path. It began to look as if the colony, cut off from Earth and lacking the resources to combat the menace, was doomed. Then some of the colonists noticed that the small, dragonlike lizards that inhabited their new world were joining the fight against Thread, breathing fire on it and teleporting to safety.

missing sections of stories
the performance was great, but you can tell good size portions of the stories were deliberately left out. I can understand some parts being removed due to their sexual nature, but the rest just ruin the story.

Poorly abridged so that it is confusing in places
I didn't read the info closely enough before I bought this, so I didn't realize it was abridged until I was listening to it and it suddenly jumped from one thing to another and then referred back to something that never happened in this audiobook (but did in the print version). This happened quite a few times. I had read the print version years ago and some of the parts that were skipped were parts that are necessary to the story. I think they seriously over-abridged this. Unfortunate, because I love Marina Sirtis's narration. I'm getting either the kindle or the print version so I can read this as Ms. McCaffrey wrote it and I won't be buying abridged audio versions of her other books after hearing how poorly this one was abridged.

I used to be a fan of Ann MacCaffery
The abbrighements of part one threw off balance and I found the ending of part two very unsatisfying. As of the time I write this I haven't worked up the interest to listen to part three. It's sad because these stories touch on some important themes.

How easy is the listening?
This is the first audible book I have partially listened to that is not easy to hear. I am not speaking about the quality of the voice. I am talking about the unevenness of the volume. It seems to vary. Played with my volume control, but that didn't do any good. I know the story, because I have read it a number of times, and I mostly like McCaffrey books. As I said before, this is the first audible book in four different languages that I have problems with.
Reading over this, I see I haven't done a very good job of describing the problem. Sorry about that.

Great book
I am a huge McCaffrey fan and I love Marina Sirtis. At first though, it was difficult to listen to the narration. Once I was used to her accent, it was wonderful. A great story and the performance of the narration really brought it to life.

Poorly edited ABRIDGED Versions - AVOID!
This abridged version is SIGNIFICANTLY different than the actual book, leaving out significant details. I do not like that, & will request a refund of my credit.

So great to see Anne McCaffrey on Audible!!!
My favorite author, my favorite stories! I’ve read these books many times over the years and they never get old. It is such a pleasure to discover them on Audible now that my eyes are old and tired! The narrator is awesome! She gives just the right tone to each of the characters and her accent is exactly what I heard in my mind all those times I read the books in the past.

Not an inspired performance, a wasted credit
Having read the Petaybee books some 15 years ago I thought it nice to hear the story again while being on holiday.
It was not a good revisit to a great story. The abbreviation was done badly, so most of the characters fell flat and the involvements between the protagonists were not easy to understand.
The performance was more of a loud reading of a story than the usual set of characters spoken with different voice tones.
Not a book I would ever to listen again

Good book narration could be better
This a subjective review, I know the books having read them years and years ago, and the story is great. I don't know why but could not engage with the narrator of the audio book, not that it was poor but just didn't get on with the voice. I would try and find a version narrated by a different person
