Publisher's Summary

"In the past, for reasons I try to explain, I've often felt I had to be careful in public, like I was up on a wire without a net. Now I'm letting my guard down." (Hillary Rodham Clinton, from the introduction of What Happened)

For the first time, Hillary Rodham Clinton reveals what she was thinking and feeling during one of the most controversial and unpredictable presidential elections in history. Now free from the constraints of running, Hillary takes you inside the intense personal experience of becoming the first woman nominated for president by a major party in an election marked by rage, sexism, exhilarating highs and infuriating lows, stranger-than-fiction twists, Russian interference, and an opponent who broke all the rules. This is her most personal memoir yet.

In this audiobook she describes what it was like to run against Donald Trump, the mistakes she made, how she has coped with a shocking and devastating loss, and how she found the strength to pick herself back up afterward. With humor and candor, she tells listeners what it took to get back on her feet - the rituals, relationships, and reading that got her through and what the experience has taught her about life. She speaks about the challenges of being a strong woman in the public eye, the criticism over her voice, age, and appearance, and the double standard confronting women in politics.

She lays out how the 2016 election was marked by an unprecedented assault on our democracy by a foreign adversary. By analyzing the evidence and connecting the dots, Hillary shows just how dangerous the forces are that shaped the outcome and why Americans need to understand them to protect our values and our democracy in the future.

The election of 2016 was unprecedented and historic. What Happened is the story of that campaign and its aftermath - both a deeply intimate account and a cautionary tale for the nation.

    "Fantastic"

I really enjoyed this audio book. Clinton does a fantastic job reading. Most interesting, was to hear how the media covered the election, and the influence they had in deciding what they chose to report or not, and the construction of Clinton's persona. Highly recommend.

    "3 of 4 musings prove true @Sept 2017"

Shivers listening to the final chapter as HRC contrasts Trump's failure to govern against the bigger picture. Imagining 4 different serious disasters- each a test for a strong leader - and as I listened, having just seen Trump's taunts at the UN, wonder how much HRC could see into the future, as 3 of her examples have happened

    "Important and great listening"
    Any additional comments?

This book is important because it is a substantial reflection not only of the 2016 electoral campaign, but also because it details the life of a dedicated and much knowledgeable public servant.
In this audible, Hilary Clinton shows intelligence, deep insight of the 'political', articulation, openness and honesty. She gives a candid evaluation of her performance as a candidate confronting an angry and at times hostile electorate and a cunning opponent tapping and stirring those negative emotions rather then present solid and thoughtful political alternatives.
I could not put down the book (or turn off my audible). It is well written, full of insightful anecdotes and deep understanding of the socio-political task. I ended up with a renewed respect for Hilary Clinton. I empathize with her grief and salute her courage. Most of all, I receive her call for a renewed sense of duty in the face of a challenging future with ignorant and self-serving leaders. I also congratulate her willingness to move forward and continue the fight for justice, equality and strong leadership.
She is the narrator and frankly this is an advantage because in reading her words she was able to give the right tone everywhere necessary which made listening a real pleasure.
Overall, I consider that Hilary Clinton has given us her true self in pages that will be used for future reference.

Thank you Secretary Clinton. I really did need this book, with all of your thoughts & feelings, to bring the world back into focus. You've been such an inspiration, and I'm glad to see you speaking out once again. The country needs your voice, now more than ever.

    "I absolutely loved this book."
Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

Definitely. I have already recommended this book to tons of people. I felt like I was in the race with her. Not only did you hear about the race but you learned about who she was growing up. It wasn't all about the race and politics.

What other book might you compare What Happened to and why?

I can't compare her to anyone else I've read.

Have you listened to any of Hillary Rodham Clinton’s other performances before? How does this one compare?

    Haven't.

If you were to make a film of this book, what would the tag line be?

I would keep the title the same "What Happened".

I enjoyed it very much she didn't rant she just explained what she thought she did wrong and what others did wrong as well if you are one of those opinions flapping cry baby that thinks hating her is the cool thing to do then don't waste your time you know your just looking to hate it. But if your looking to better understand and look past a lot of the anti Clinton propaganda you should enjoy it.

"Well written, and narrated. Made me understand her better."

I have never been a fan of Hillary Clinton. Don't get me wrong, I am not a fan of Donald Trump either. I was one of those people who had to choose which candidate was the lesser of the evil. Because I could not come to that conclusion, I did not vote. I really wish she had come out with a book sooner that could help me understand her a bit better and showed her vulnerability and humanity before the election. I likely would have a voted for her. she has in fact done a lot of good for this country, and other countries too. There were several cheap shots in here, but again, I understand she is human and still must be quite distraught over the outcome of the election. I was one of the people guilty of not seeing the humanity in her. Only as a robot that she portrays on television. Almost catatonic, which to me showed lack of empathy. I felt she was in it just to win. I now see that of course she was in it to win, but she was also in it for the right reasons. She wanted to help a lot of people. While the bribes she took for the Clinton foundation we're not entirely ethical, let's face it, it was in fact going for a good cause. So many things I wish I had known before. However, we can't turn back time and we can only look forward. Donald Trump is very unpredictable, and has shown his humanity, which unfortunately lacks empathy. I was one of the people that was more so on trumps side only because of his policies. Not because of the person he is because let's face it he does not strike me as a good person. But on the other hand he sure as hell raised Great kids. But after reading the book I immediately asked myself the question would Donald Trump be writing a book about his life and feelings. I don't see that happening he has not done enough great for the world. I mean maybe he has, but I would sure like to hear all about it. I won't be holding my breath on that one. Overall the book kept me captivated and interested, and went through the whole thing in three days. Highly recommend.

    "A good listen"

Naturally this book won't be for everyone, but as a Canadian observer of US politics, I found Clinton's book to be intriguing, and very insightful. In particular, her observations on what women face in political life - and indeed in all aspects of life - were frank, trenchant and fair-minded. Those who voted against her, whether in the primaries or in the general election, will doubtless find much to mock or critique, but I think her story is interesting and worth listening to.

Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

It's a wonderful piece of writing, high quality memoir and history. HRC's performance is great -- wonderful to have her voice telling her story. As for the content... well, it is very distressing to re-live the loss and see what leadership the world could have had. But I found spending time with her company very nourishing, and I felt stronger afterwards and ready to try and make a difference to world. Not on a Hillary scale, obviously, but just in my small world.

    "Terrifying"

A brilliant insight into the Clinton campaign and the 2016 US presidential elections.
Recognising that this is a one-sided account, some of the information about Russian hacking, the inability of the media to be unbiased and the obsession with Clintons emails put a new spin of horror into the result of the election and a strong warning for the future of US and western democracy!
Even if you are not a Hillary fan (I wasn't), even if you're a Bernie or die supporter, even if you're someone who has always voted republican, this is a must read/listen/share!

I still don't understand the excessive level of hatred Hillary is constantly met with. This book, though I do find rather indulgent in places, is something I am grateful for. She is vulnerable at times, acerbic at others, proud, sad, defiant, ashamed. But I like the book for it, because it means she isn't just political. She goes through the campaign events as she experienced them and, at least in my opinion, brings some insight into something that has baffled so many of us.

How did the narrator detract from the book?

Not very warm, very self serving
