Legacy and duty, or the freedom to carve your own path? It’s a difficult choice that Charles “Chance” Jameson must reckon with. He has reached eighteen Summers, the age of majority for humans who call the Wassirian Republic home. Like all the other newly minted adults, he faces a once in a lifetime choice. Service in the legions for five years, which brings both hardship and duty. Or the path of a commoner, living on the outskirts of accepted society. Freshly promoted to Novitiates in the Republic’s Seventh "Fortuna" legion, Chance and his friends embark on far harsher instruction to learn the ways of the heavy infantry. The backbone of every legion for more than a thousand years. At the same time, he struggles to understand and keep secret the strange powers that seem to have been bestowed upon him. Power that he has no idea how to control.

Cut off from Tenth Company, Chance and Rayne are trapped in the snow-bound mountain peaks of the Griffin Mountain Range. Finding salvation in the form of a mysterious cave that holds more questions than answers. Forced to face the feelings he has for his friend while staying true to the one he loves. Onyx and Heli depart with the rest of Chance’s file on a rescue mission to save them, while Savitie and the rest of his company lick their recent wounds and wait for reinforcements from the Legate.
