Publisher's Summary

On the anniversary of his father’s passing, Jon leaves home in search of answers. The land is full of mystery and intrigue, and Jon wants to explore it all with the dream of one day becoming a sorcerer. But when Jon receives an invite to the castle for training, he starts to believe there has to be a catch.

A long time ago, Jon’s father was once a guard near the capital city. Now Jon finds himself back where his father used to work, and he’s beginning to learn why his father had wanted to raise him away from here. He will discover that, along with certain threats to the kingdom, there are also many magical arts to learn. Some seem stronger than others, but all have their use. Jon must come to understand the complexities of sorcery as he uncovers the mysteries and threats to the kingdom. But he also must learn to deal with the other sorcerers who have come to train at the castle at the same time as him...some of whom are hard to trust.

YA dulls the edge in this one

I love the narrator and he main character. Due to under developed potential it felt like something for a young audience. I wasn’t in the mood for the dulled edges of YA

Clumsy

This was clumsy in a nutshell. MC that can do no wrong. Full of 2d characters 2d plot and 2d dialog. the author will get better with time but I don't think this is honestly publishable. I've read too many self publish so much more flushed out that I can't recommend to anyone.

Beautiful writing

This particular epic fantasy has everything, great world building with a subtle magic system. For a quick read it is beautifully written with a relatable hero who has several quote worthy passages. This book is a must read/listen, usually I recommend read but the narrator (Simon Vance) is excellent.

Worth it!

The magic system was interesting. This book is definitely worth listening to! The story was over before I knew it and I am downloading the second book as I write this review.

good book, great performance.

I thoroughly enjoyed this book. It is the first I have read from this author, and I will definitely explore more of his work. my only real criticism would be that there are a few occasions that it seemed to lack a real threat to the MC. Not to say it wasn't there at all, but it always worked out for him, even when it was built up to possibly be horrible and no where comes close. one of those feel good story where the MC is the strongest, smartest, and never fails... which isn't a bad thing. I am one of the few who regularly enjoy this kind of story, as long as it makes sense. It was really only the ending that bothered me, as it was built up to being worst case, but then the punishment is a joke. otherwise, I loved it, and I cant wait for book 2.

Lacking and simply boring

The story was an interesting premise but didn’t even execute the plot or move along. Instead we get stuck at the castle much of the time going on and on about feelings and how people perceive us and how we do t want to step on anyone’s toes and offend them. The actual fighting battles and intrigue are lacking and subpar. In fact after this first book I couldn’t say whom the main protagonists are because the book can’t hold your attention. Would not recommend.

Still unsure

I listened to the entire book. It ended strange.
So short the whole 3 books could have been made into one.
And quite youth based? At times it seemed it was meant to appeal to a younger crowd, but then at other times it seemed to address adult things.
I did not care for the “hero”. So full of himself, the beat at everything he does it seems.
Sorry I wasted a credit on it.
I kept waiting for it to get better

Introspected Mage

The story is good. But, too much introverted thoughts, almost like the Spell Monger series but doesn't have the in depth entertaining sauce. The narrator was really good 9 out of 10. The narrative characters were unique, not monotonal.
Magic system is different and unique ( to my knowledge ).

Amazingly delivered by Simon Vance

This new cycle is encapsulating but the delivery by Simon Vance takes all the B T Narro books to a new level. I can’t wait for the next book to be recorded! If only they would get Simon Vance to re-record the original cycles, I would buy them all in an instant!

Really enjoyable

I was glued to this book from start to finish, taking every opportunity I could to listen or read the kindle version. The magic system seems really interesting. I would have liked the book to be longer however and spend some more time building the characters. The events seemed to all happen a bit too quickly without building up properly first.

Very entertaining

Many of the best magic systems are those that keep it simple, coupled with broadness of field and gradual revelation. The King's Sorcerer does this all, with the system being completely unique and interesting and letting the protagonist's characteristic strengths shine. The plot, too, is rather simple. A kingdom or city under siege isn't anything new, and yet the excellent story telling, world building and realistic characters sets it apart as a very worth-while and entertaining book. There is an incredible balance achieved between the perceptions that we are hearing the story of John, the story of the kingdom, the story of the king, and the conclusion of... well, that'd be a bit too close to a spoiler, I think.

I never used to pay too much attention to narrators aside from trying to filter out bothersome quirks so that they don't ruin the story, but Simon Vance is fantastic. I will look twice at any potential purchase in future, if he is narrating it.

Even Simon Vance couldn't save this...

Just a poorly written and paced YA book which even the marvelous SV couldn't save... refunded!
